Fans of Nora Roberts, Susan Mallery and Kristin Hannah will enjoy these emotionally compelling and romantic stories about wishes and the power of love.

    A Secret Wish

One night in San Francisco, three women make a birthday. Liz is turning thirty. A successful nurse, she has a good career, but no man to share her life. All her friends are married, and she’s alone, still trying to outrun a tragedy from her past. Then she meets a handsome stranger.

Angela, a member of a large, loving Italian family, is facing thirty-five with no baby in the nursery. Eight years of infertility treatments have put a strain on her marriage. Will she have to choose between her husband and having a child? When she is mugged by an unexpected assailant her life takes a new turn.

Carole, a corporate wife, is staring down forty candles. Having grown up poor, she worked hard to get ahead, but when her kids bail on her birthday, and she discovers her husband with another woman, she realizes that she may have nothing at all. She goes back to where it all began, the mother she left behind, and the man whose heart she once broke.

Three women, three birthdays and one unforgettable night that will change their lives forever.

    Just A Wish Away

Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy, takes us back to the beach in an emotional love story between two best friends who have been separated for a very long time.

Alexa Parker and Braden Elliott fell in love when they were twelve years old. On a summer day, while searching for sea glass on the beaches of Washington State, they discovered an unusually shaped bottle. The ever-imaginative Alexa declared it a genie’s bottle. Popping the cork, they were surprised by a rogue wave that sprayed them with a fine, cool mist. Closing their eyes, they each made a wish …

Before their love had a chance to grow, life, family and tragedy separated the two best friends. Now fifteen years later, Alexa returns to Sand Harbor after her aunt is injured in a mysterious break-in at her antique store. Braden is also back, but he’s not the innocent boy Alexa remembers. His military service has left him with physical and emotional scars.

Can the sweet love of youth be recaptured by two now cynical souls? Can solving the mystery of the past bring them to a new future? Or will it take a wish, maybe two …

    When Wishes Collide

In a moment of desperation two strangers make a wish, only to discover that sometimes a wish can take you down an unexpected path … straight toward a life-changing love.

Adrianna Cavello’s life changed in an instant when a break-in at her restaurant took the life of her boyfriend and left her too traumatized to return to work. Months later, with everything she’s ever wanted on the line, Adrianna makes a wish by tossing a coin into a fountain known for making miracles.

Wyatt Randall is also in need of a miracle. Two years earlier, his ex-wife kidnapped their daughter, and Wyatt is desperate to find his little girl. A new lead raises his hopes, but quickly fizzles out. When his coin clashes with another, he sees what little hope he has flying away.

Adrianna and Wyatt soon learn that they have more in common than two coins that collided. In fighting for the lives they lost, they must learn how to trust each other and how to love again. Only then will they discover that meeting each other might not be what they wished for, but exactly what they need.

  • The Duchess War

The Duchess War by Courtney Milan

RECOMMENDED: Thanks to Michelle for the heads up – The Duchess War by Courtney Milan is free right now pretty much everywhere.  This is the first book in the Brothers Sinister series, and Carrie reviewed it and gave it an A+, saying, “The Duchess War is lovely – smart, touching, funny, sexy, and dizzyingly romantic.  Read it right away – yes, now.  Everything on your to-do list can wait, believe me.”

Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly–so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don’t get trampled. So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention.

But that is precisely what she gets.

Because Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont, is not fooled. When Minnie figures out what he’s up to, he realizes there is more to her than her spectacles and her quiet ways. And he’s determined to lay her every secret bare before she can discover his. But this time, one shy miss may prove to be more than his match…

The books in the Brothers Sinister series:
½. The Governess Affair (prequel novella)
    1. The Duchess War
1½. A Kiss for Midwinter (a companion novella to The Duchess War)
    2. The Heiress Effect

  • Rules of the Game

Rules of the Game by Sandy James

Rules of the Game by Sandy James is .99c. This is a contemporary romance about a novelist whose pseudonym is living a much more interesting life than she is. So of course she has to find a date to her high school reunion that will live up to her pseudonymous life. Readers who enjoyed it – it has a 3.5-star average – liked the banter and the heroine, but one reviewer was kind enough to give a heads up – trigger warning for rape in the backstory.

Kathryn West has it all – she’s a confident, bestselling author living it up in New York City. Too bad she doesn’t actually exist, and is only timid Maddie Sawyer’s pseudonym. Determined to attend her high school reunion with a man right out of one of her racy romance novels, she plots to find a sexy bad boy who’s up to Kathryn’s standards.

She finds Mr. Perfect shooting pool in a biker bar. He’s a blue-collar hunk who just happens to look great in leather. But the mysterious Scott Brady has some rules of his own: he won’t agree to her deal unless she poses as his girlfriend in front of his family and friends first.

As the reunion nears, Maddie tries to maintain her carefree façade, knowing she’ll soon face some old ghosts. She’s torn between her growing attraction to Scott and the nagging feeling that he’s hiding something important. Will she still want him when she finds out his secret? What about when he discovers hers?

How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You by Matthew Inman

How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You by Matthew Inman, aka The Oatmeal, is $1.99 at Amazon for the Kindle – as is a companion title, My Dog: The Paradox ( A | K | G | AB ). Both are comics, and viewable on tablets or desktops, and not on eInk Kindles.

Each book is a collection of comics about cats or dogs, from the very popular website The Oatmeal. If you are looking for a gift for a pet lover (who has a tablet!), this might be great option for you.

Jesus Rollerblading Christ–another helping of The Oatmeal! Mrow, MOAR kitty comics. Mr. Oats delivers a sidesplitting serving of cat comics in his new book, How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You.

If your cat is kneading you, that’s not a sign of affection. Your cat is actually checking your internal organs for weakness. If your cat brings you a dead animal, this isn’t a gift. It’s a warning. How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You is a hilarious, brilliant offering of cat comics, facts, and instructional guides from the creative wonderland.

Not sure if this was on purpose or not, but the last line for “Rules of the Game”, the description you wrote, not the synopsis, the text is in white, you have to highlight it to see it. This line “trigger warning for rape in the backstory.”

  2. TheoLibrarian says:

I was so excited by the news of The Duchess War being free that I went flailing madly into my coworker’s office and refused to leave until she had downloaded it.

If you haven’t read The Duchess War, this is the time!

“How to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you” is completely hilarious. It’s popular at our place as a coffee table book.

@Olivia – I did mean to white it out. I should have marked it as a spoiler, though. My bad!
