Books on Sale: Mystery and Suspense with Men in Uniform & Artsy Heroines

Book Broslin Creek Boxed Set

The Broslin Creek Boxed Set by Dana Marton is less than $5! This set includes the first three books in her romantic suspense Broslin Creek series. All three books feature law enforcement and veteran heroes and I know the bitchery loves a man in uniform. With over 3.8-star ratings on GR, readers praised Marton for her amazing blend of action and romance, but found some of the HEAs a little lackluster.

Book 1: Deathwatch

As the only person who can identify the most notorious hit man in the country, Kat Bridges is running for her life.

Murphy Dolan is in the Army Reserves, returning from his 2nd tour of duty, only to find a stranger hiding in his house. She's scared spitless. He's completely burned-out on violence. Neither of them has any trust left to give.

If the best of the FBI couldn't protect her from the country’s most notorious assassin, does a burned-out small town cop have a prayer?

Book 2: Deathscape

After a near-death experience, artist Ashley Price is compelled to paint visions of the dead, and fears she's gone crazy. Then she paints a man buried alive and, recognizing the surroundings, she rushes to save him.

Instead of being grateful to her for rescuing him, Detective Jack Sullivan accuses her of being in league with a serial killer. He swears he will put her behind bars. Except, the more time he spends with her, the more he falls under her spell. Can he trust her, or is he walking into another deadly trap?

Book 3: Deathtrap

She'd been “the sick girl” for most of her life. She refused to go straight to “the weird girl”. Heart-transplant recipient Sophie Curtis has been in her own antiseptic bubble for so long, she just might not be able to venture out into the real world again. Her spooky body memories are scary enough, but then she finds herself in the cross hairs of a killer.

“Love was blind, people said. But lust was blind, deaf and reckless.” Ethan Bing hadn't been a great romantic before he became a cop. Whatever shred of optimism he had left after becoming Broslin Chief of Police had been seared out of him by the unsolved murder of his wife two years before. A new case brings the killer within reach just as Sophie pops into his life. She gets through his defenses like no other before, but soon it becomes clear that she's been selected as the killer's next victim.

Book Dangerous Passion

Dangerous Passion by Lisa Marie Rice is $1.99! This book is the third installmant in Rice's Dangerous romantic suspense series, though it can be read as a standalone novel. For those with a weakness for billionaire heroes and artsy heroines, I should probably issue a catnip alert. Though some readers found the suspense a little light, the book made up for it with steamy romance. It has a 4.0-star rating on GR.

Feelings kill faster than bullets.

Book Hard Target

Hard Target by Kay Thomas is $1.99! It's the first book in Thomas' Elite Ops series and the second book, Personal Target ( A | BN | K ), is on sale as well! This romantic suspense features a romance between a DEA agent and woman whose ailing son has been kidnapped. Readers enjoyed the pacing of the action and the progression of the romance between the hero and heroine, but some found our resident leading lady to be a little boring. Has anyone read this series?

Former DEA agent Leland Hollis wasn't planning on being a hero. Recovering from an injury sustained during a drug bust gone wrong and with more personal demons than he cares to admit, he wants nothing more than peace and a chance to rebuild his life. But when Anna Mercado's crazy ex shows up wielding a baseball bat, Leland can't ignore his instinct to help. And after her son is kidnapped, Leland agrees to deliver the ransom into dangerous territory south of the border.

Anna has no choice but to go with this stranger she's just met if she ever wants to see her son again. But getting the boy out of a violent cartel region involves risking everything. And for that Leland will have to convince Anna to do the scariest thing of all … open her heart and trust him.

Book That Old Black Magic

That Old Black Magic by Mary Jane Clark is $1.99! This is the fourth book in her Wedding Cake Mystery series. Set in New Orleans, this book marks the return of Clark's wedding decorator and part-time actress heroine, Piper Donovan. Readers stress that the books should be read in order, and they enjoyed how the historical knowledge of The Big Easy was threaded throughout the story. But some felt this cozy mystery was a little too cozy for their liking. Any takers?

Aspiring actress and wedding-cake decorator Piper Donovan has barely arrived in New Orleans to perfect her pastry skills at the renowned French Quarter bakery, Boulangerie Bertrand, when a ghastly murder rocks the magical city. Intrigued by the case, Piper can't help but look for the “Hoodoo Killer” among the faces around her. Could it be the handsome guide eager to give her special private tours? Or the inscrutable jazz musician who plays on historic Royal Street? What about the ratings-starved radio talk-show host? Or even the amiable owner of the local Gris-Gris Bar?

Though Piper has a full plate decorating cakes for upcoming wedding celebrations, she's also landed an exciting but unnerving role in a movie being shot in the Big Easy. When the murderer strikes again, leaving macabre clues, she thinks she can unmask the killer. But Piper will have to conjure up some old black magic of her own if she hopes to live long enough to reveal the truth.

I’m glad to see Dana Marton getting some SBTB face-time.  She was my “This writer needs to be read more” candidate.  I read her Harlequin Intrigues – wonderful love-on-the-run reminiscent of Linda Howard.  Dana’s Harlequins read like movies, cover-to-cover adventure, interesting characters, unexpected humor.

Then I finished all her Harlequins and went hunting and found Deathscape.  Wow, what a change of pace – in the best possible way.  This is a mature work, dark and broody, with a riveting murder mystery.

I highly recommend all Dana Marton’s books for any reader into action and adventure, romance and suspense, and humor.
