Book Parasite

Parasite by Mira Grant is $1.99! While not a romance, this science fiction horror novel, where people are being turned into zombies via gross tapeworm-esque parasites, has been a big hit with the SBTB crew. For those with a medical background, be advised that there are glaring inaccuracies and the book does end on a cliffhanger. Carrie reviewed it and gave it an A+:

I realize that under normal circumstances a book about tapeworm zombies is a bit out of Smart Bitches usual oeuvre, but I’ve noticed that Mira Grant has many ardent fans on this site.  If you are already a fan, then this book will not disappoint.  If not, then this book is a good place to start.

And Redheadedgirl gave it an A-:

I devoured this book, not unlike a tapeworm.  And I am now anxiously awaiting the next one, because WHAT IS GONNA HAPPEN OMG.  And when a series has me feeling anxious about how long I know it’ll be before the next book comes out (and it’s currently scheduled for release in 2014, so we’re not talking George R. R. Martin levels of waiting here), that’s a good sign.

A decade in the future, humanity thrives in the absence of sickness and disease.

We owe our good health to a humble parasite – a genetically engineered tapeworm developed by the pioneering SymboGen Corporation. When implanted, the tapeworm protects us from illness, boosts our immune system – even secretes designer drugs. It's been successful beyond the scientists' wildest dreams. Now, years on, almost every human being has a SymboGen tapeworm living within them.

But these parasites are getting restless. They want their own lives…and will do anything to get them.

Book Dirty Magic

Dirty Magic by Jaye Wells is $1.99! This is book one in Wells' Prospero's War urban fantasy series. For those of you wondering whether or not the name sounds familiar, Wells also writes the Sabina Kane series, which I personally enjoy. Readers thought this was a good start to a new series, though some found issue with the pacing. Opinions also seem to be divided on the heroine's sex-loving demon sidekick. Released earlier this year, it already has a 3.7-star rating on GR.

The last thing patrol cop Kate Prospero expected to find on her nightly rounds was a werewolf covered in the blood of his latest victim. But then, she also didn't expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of a Magic Enforcement Agency task force, who wants to know why she killed their lead snitch.

The more Prospero learns about the dangerous new potion the MEA is investigating, the more she's convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she's been wanting. But getting the assignment proves much easier than solving the case. Especially once the investigation reveals their lead suspect is the man she walked away from ten years earlier—on the same day she swore she'd never use dirty magic again.

Kate Prospero's about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should be never say never.

Book The Long Earth

The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter is $1.99! This is another humorous scifi fantasy novel from the creator of the much loved Discworld series. In the beginning novel of The Long Earth series, Earth has now unlocked the possibility for inter-dimensional travel. While most readers thought it was an interesting concept, they felt the collaboration aspect between the two authors worked against the plot. This book has a 3.6-star rating on GR.

NORMALLY, WHEN THERE WAS NOTHING TO DO, HE LISTENED TO THE SILENCE.

The Silence was very faint here. Almost drowned out by the sounds of the mundane world. Did people in this polished building understand how noisy it was? The roar of air conditioners and computer fans, the susurration of many voices heard but not decipherable…. This was the office of the transEarth Institute, an arm of the Black Corporation. The faceless office, all plasterboard and chrome, was dominated by a huge logo, a chesspiece knight. This wasn't Joshua's world. None of it was his world. In fact, when you got right down to it, he didn't have a world; he had all of them.

ALL OF THE LONG EARTH.

Book Duke of Midnight

Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This is the sixth book in Hoyt's Maiden Lane series and is currently nominated for a RITA® in the Historical Romance category. Readers seem torn on whether Duke of Midnight has the best heroine or the best hero so far in the series. We've also had some favorable guest reviews. It also has a 4.1-star rating on GR. For the RITA® Reader Challenge, Pam G. gave it an A+:

Duke of Midnight is far more than an excellent offering in the Maiden Lane series.  It is a beautifully crafted, gripping read in its own right, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys an historical novel that transports the reader fully to a place and time where powerful and passionate characters flourish in an atmosphere of swashbuckling derring-do.

WHEN A MASKED MAN . . .

Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe—and won't back down . . .

MEETS HIS MATCH . . .

Artemis Greaves toils as a lady's companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads, she recognizes a kindred spirit-and is intrigued. She's even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day . . .

DESIRE IGNITES A DANGEROUS PASSION

Artemis makes a bold move: she demands that Maximus use his influence to free her imprisoned brother-or she will expose him as the Ghost. But blackmailing a powerful duke isn't without risks. Now that she has the tiger by the tail, can she withstand his ire-or the temptation of his embrace?

Savannah Breeze by Mary Kay Andrews (one of my favorite authors)  is on sale for $1.99 on Amazon:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GCFBV0

  2. L. says:

Okay, I’m willing to try Parasite. Science was my second worst subject so I probably won’t mind all the inaccuracies. This better not be grossy gross, though.

  3. mochabean says:

Parasite is a good read—as is Mira Grant’s “Newsflesh” zombie trilogy, which does have some strong romantic elements, particularly in book 3. Mira Grant is the pen name of Seanan McGuire, who under that name writes very cool modern fantasy, some of which I would definitely put in the romance category.

All of her books have a strong, wise-ass voice to them which I really enjoy

@L I would not call it grossy gross—nothing too graphic.

  4. peggy h says:

I’m currently about 71% into Parasite, and I’m as engrossed as I was in the Newsflesh trilogy (i.e., VERY engrossed!)  Part 2 is coming out in November, but ouch-ouch-ouch—unless/until it goes on sale, it will be well above the price I allow myself to hit “purchase”.  On the other hand, I may not be able to help myself, especially as (based on reviews) it sounds like this will end on a cliffhanger.  Arrgghh!

  5. Lostshadows says:

@peggy h, libraries are your friend when it comes to hardcovers and cliffhangers.

  6. Pointy Ears42 says:

I heartily disliked the one Seanan McGuire I read….. but love her Mira Grant works! Loved the Newsflesh trilogy and the only reason I haven’t devoured this new one is because I’d rather wait and read them in a single block as I did with Newsflesh.

  7. Crystal says:

I read Parasite and was a little disappointed when I didn’t love it the way I did the Newsflesh series.  I didn’t hate it, I just didn’t have the immediate “LET ME LOVE YOU” reaction I did to George and Shaun.

Dirty Magic I read a couple of months ago, and I loved it.  I liked it even more than I did Sabina Kane, and I liked SK quite a bit.  Also, no demon sidekick.  He’s only in SK.

  8. Amanda says:

@Crystal: I thought the demon sidekick sounded too familiar because I’ve read the SK books. I just thought she brought the character over given that I found him to be hilarious and “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Perhaps people are getting the two confused.

  9. Kilian Metcalf says:

I’m willing to risk $1.99 for a potential good read by an author new to me, especially if there is a backlist I can dip into if I like it. I notice that this is a Hachette book. Has Amazon buried the hatchet with Hachette?
