Books on Sale: Paranormal, Fantasy, Steampunk Erotic and More

Book Wilder's Mate - Moira Rogers

RECOMMENDED: Wilder's Mate by Moira Rogers is FREE at all vendors right now – woo! This is the first book in their Bloodhounds series, and it was a Sizzling Book Club Pick in 2011. This is a steampunk erotic paranormal wild west romance novella that blends, obviously, a LOT of genres. I liked the different themes that were introduced in the story, particularly the moral struggle of the hero and that the heroine is a super-smart weapons expert and inventor.

Wilder Harding is a bloodhound, created by the Guild to hunt down and kill vampires on America’s frontier. His enhanced abilities come with a high price: on the full moon, he becomes capable of savagery beyond telling, while the new moon brings a sexual hunger that borders on madness.

Rescuing a weapons inventor from undead kidnappers is just another assignment, though one with an added complication—keeping his hands off the man’s pretty young apprentice, who insists on tagging along.

At odds with polite society, Satira’s only constant has been the aging weapons inventor who treats her like a daughter. She isn’t going to trust Wilder with Nathaniel’s life, not when the Guild might decide the old man isn’t worth saving. Besides, if there’s one thing she’s learned, it’s that brains are more important than brawn.

As the search stretches far longer than Wilder planned, he finds himself fighting against time. If Satira is still at his side when the new moon comes, nothing will stop him from claiming her. Worse, she seems all too willing. If their passion unlocks the beast inside, no one will be safe. Not even the man they’re fighting to save.

Warning: This book contains a crude, gun-slinging, vampire-hunting hero who howls at the full moon and a smart, stubborn heroine who invents mad-scientist weapons. Also included: wild frontier adventures, brothels, danger, betrayal and a good dose of wicked loving in an alternate Wild West.

Book Sorcery and Cecelia

RECOMMENDED: Sorcery and Cecelia, or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot, by Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer is $3.99 on sale right now. This was a Sizzling Book Club pick, too, in December 2012. This book blended a lot of my favorite things: clever women, epistolary storytelling, and a Regency setting. I know this is a reader favorite, too.

Two girls contend with sorcery in England’s Regency age

Since they were children, cousins Kate and Cecelia have been inseparable. But in 1817, as they approach adulthood, their families force them to spend a summer apart. As Cecelia fights boredom in her small country town, Kate visits London to mingle with the brightest lights of English society.

At the initiation of a powerful magician into the Royal College of Wizards, Kate finds herself alone with a mysterious witch who offers her a sip from a chocolate pot. When Kate refuses the drink, the chocolate burns through her dress and the witch disappears. It seems that strange forces are convening to destroy a beloved wizard, and only Kate and Cecelia can stop the plot. But for two girls who have to contend with the pressures of choosing dresses and beaux for their debuts, deadly magic is only one of their concerns.

This ebook features illustrated biographies of Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the authors’ personal collections.

Book Rogue's Pawn

Rogue's Pawn by Jeffe Kennedy is .99, or .74 cents after the 25% rebate at ARe going on right now. This is a fantasy paranormal blending faeries, folklore, and erotica. It has a 3.8-star average on GoodReads, and readers who enjoyed it said that despite the beginning being a bit confusing, they were easily swept into the fae world with the heroine. Have you read this book?

This is no fairy tale…

Haunted by nightmares of a black dog, sick to death of my mind-numbing career and heart-numbing fiance, I impulsively walked out of my life–and fell into Faerie. Terrified, fascinated, I discover I possess a power I can't control: my wishes come true. After an all-too-real attack by the animal from my dreams, I wake to find myself the captive of the seductive and ruthless fae lord Rogue. In return for my rescue, he demands an extravagant price–my firstborn child, which he intends to sire himself…

With no hope of escaping this world, I must learn to harness my magic and build a new life despite the perils–including my own inexplicable and debilitating desire for Rogue. I swear I will never submit to his demands, no matter what erotic torment he subjects me to…

Book Parasite

Parasite by Mira Grant is still $1.99 on sale.

While not a romance, this science fiction horror novel, where people are being turned into zombies via gross tapeworm-esque parasites, has been a big hit with the SBTB crew. For those with a medical background, be advised that there are glaring inaccuracies and the book does end on a cliffhanger. Carrie reviewed it and gave it an A+:

I realize that under normal circumstances a book about tapeworm zombies is a bit out of Smart Bitches usual oeuvre, but I’ve noticed that Mira Grant has many ardent fans on this site.  If you are already a fan, then this book will not disappoint.  If not, then this book is a good place to start.

And Redheadedgirl gave it an A-:

I devoured this book, not unlike a tapeworm.  And I am now anxiously awaiting the next one, because WHAT IS GONNA HAPPEN OMG.  And when a series has me feeling anxious about how long I know it’ll be before the next book comes out (and it’s currently scheduled for release in 2014, so we’re not talking George R. R. Martin levels of waiting here), that’s a good sign.

A decade in the future, humanity thrives in the absence of sickness and disease.

We owe our good health to a humble parasite – a genetically engineered tapeworm developed by the pioneering SymboGen Corporation. When implanted, the tapeworm protects us from illness, boosts our immune system – even secretes designer drugs. It's been successful beyond the scientists' wildest dreams. Now, years on, almost every human being has a SymboGen tapeworm living within them.

But these parasites are getting restless. They want their own lives…and will do anything to get them.

You had me at steam punk erotic paranormal Wild West….sigh. And Free!

  2. Oh! Sorcery and Cecilia! I read that based on the Sizzling Book Club (I never seem to get them read in time for the book club, only after) and I LOVED it. I was reading a bunch of epistolary novels and it was by FAR my favorite in the genre.

Haven’t read the second one – I think there is a sequel? But the extras and the chance to own it … hmm.

  3. cleo says:

@Anna Richland – there are two more books after Sorcery and Cecelia.  I didn’t like either one as well as SaC, but they were both fun – I liked the third better than the second.  They’re both worth reading if you’re a fan, as long as you don’t go in with super high expectations.

  4. Sarita says:

I feel obligated to read that first one, given that the heroine (almost) has my name.
