Book Scandalous

Scandalous by Karen Robards is a Kindle Daily Deal today at $1.99, and it's being matched at BN. This is historical romance, book one of the Banning Sisters series – and one thing readers love a lot about the series is the relationship between the sisters. It has a 3.8-star average on GR, too.

England, 1810: When Lady Gabriella Banning receives word that her half-brother, the Earl of Wickham, has died on his tea plantation in Ceylon, she faces the reality that she and her younger sisters, Claire and Elizabeth, are suddenly penniless. The family's riches will pass to the next male heir — a distant cousin — and the Banning sisters are doomed unless Gabby thinks fast.

Which she does. Pretending that Marcus is still alive, Gabby arranges beautiful Claire's London season. She'll keep up the pretense just long enough for Claire to marry a fabulously wealthy nobleman. But when a handsome gentleman arrives at the door and claims to be Marcus, Gabby's plan backfires. For if she exposes this mysterious stranger's deceit, she exposes her own.

Bound by secrets and lies, Gabby and the roguish adventurer strike sparks off each other — and soon London society is abuzz over the scandalous pair of “siblings” who appear to be falling in love….

With this beautifully rendered romance, bestselling author Karen Robards begins a sweeping series about three unforgettable sisters poised to take the ton by storm.

Book Irresistible

Irresistible by Karen Robards is also $1.99, but this isn't a daily deal, I don't think. That price may be valid tomorrow. This is a historical romance, which you can tell because it has Ewa da Cruz in a ballgown on the cover (as opposed to Ewa da Cruz in leather pants, which means paranormal/urban fantasy). This is book 2 in the Banning Sisters series, and is a road trip/adventure plot, with a heroine who is married to a turdblossom gets kidnapped by a dude who has serious business to pursue.

With this sensual and entrancing tale, bestselling author Karen Robards continues her wonderful trilogy of three sisters taking their rightful place as the belles of Regency England's ton.

Claire Banning fulfilled every debutante's dream when she married a rich nobleman. Soon, however, the celebrated beauty realizes she wed a dissolute wastrel. Bitterly hurt and desperately lonely, Claire vows nonetheless to take her expected place in society. Then, on a journey home to her husband's estate on the coast of Sussex, she is abducted, and her life—and her heart—are changed forever.

Hugh Battancourt—a dark and dangerous nobleman who long ago turned his back on the ton and now leads a life secretly dedicated to his country's service—is determined not to be swayed by his prisoner's beauty as they share a cabin on a ship bound for France. Lives depend on his retrieving from her a letter full of secrets she intends to turn over to the enemy. But even as Claire and Hugh engage in a battle of wits and wills, captor and captive find themselves drawn irresistibly to each other. Is it possible, Claire wonders, that she could discover the true meaning of love that has eluded her with this handsome stranger? One who will lay his life on the line in order to protect her from someone who is intent on placing Claire in the path of danger?

It’s kinda funny, I just read Jack with a Twist by Brenda Janowitz via LAPL Overdrive and it has the exact same cover as It Happened One Wedding by Julie James.
    Somebody screwed up…..

  2. SB Sarah says:

It’s such a great image, I’m not surprised it was used before – but yeah, oops.

  3. Chris Z says:

I’ve been waiting for Julie James’ new book to come out.  Yay!!!!!

I had some ranty mcrant issues with one of the books in the hella big Sweet Life boxed set, but it is a great deal and for a great cause.

  4. garlicknitter says:

Well, hell, there goes my budget.  I read a sample of the Julie James at the end of one of her other books, and I know I need that, and those are great prices for the Karen Robards, so…

  5. Karen D says:

I loved the first two books in Robards’ Banning sisters trilogy. And then waited like EIGHT years for her to write the final book in the series and was soooo underwhelmed by it. Such a letdown. I’m not sure if my tastes changed in that amount of time or if Robards writing did. Still pondering if I should pick up the first two since I did love them, especially the second one. But maybe I’ll find them dated too. As Pooh would say, “Oh bother!”

  6. C says:

    Yay for new Julie James!

  7. trefoil says:

Julie James is NOT on sale in Canada 🙁  Well. it’s $8.99 instead of $9.99. Still seriously considering it.

  8. Carol says:

From the Julie James cover: “Because the one woman who refuses to be caught may be the only one [the man] can’t live without…”. Is this the number one trope in romance or is it just on every cover that I’ve looked at lately? (Not that that’s a bad thing.)

  9. Susan says:

@ Karen D:  I gave up waiting, and didn’t even realize it had ever been published.  That’s OK, tho, because I also gave up on Karen Robards in the meantime.  I’ll occasionally re-read one of her oldies, but haven’t bought a new title in ages.

  10. library addict says:

I bought the Julie James at Google Play. First time shipping there (other than for apps) as I didn’t realize they sold ePubs. The download button is well hidden, but I found it – lol!

  11. library addict says:

Urgh, shopping not shipping. Though I suppose I ship Julie James’ books so that could work (not so much Google!)

  12. Daisy says:

Scandalous sounded vaguely familiar so I followed the link to Amazon, and realized within two paragraphs why I did not buy it before: the servant had supposedly sailed from England to Ceylon and back within two months.  I need a little more verisimilitude than that.

Transport tantrum is a close cousin of potato rage.

  13. Jo says:

Ok, so I grabbed the Julie James and the book set. No idea when I will have a chance to read them as I started full time study this week but I can’t resist 🙂

  14. SB Sarah says:

    @Daisy:

Transport tantrum is a close cousin of potato rage.

That made me snortlaugh in my coffee – ouch!

    @Chris Z:

Which book gave you the ranty-mc-rants? How come?

  15. Chris Z says:

Since the bundle has 14 books, I didn’t expect to love them all.  Which turned out to be realistic.  I didn’t hate any of them.  One was a DNF, one was an “Always wondered about this author, gee, I never need to buy their stuff”, one caused mixed “love the humor” and the previously mentioned “ranty-mc-rant”.

Every Girl Does It by Rachel Van Dyken was a complete mixed bag of hilarity and WTF rantyness.  I loved a lot of the humor between the h/h.  Seriously, some of their banter is still making me chuckle to myself.

WTF rant #1.  Traveling with pets to HI.  It isn’t as easy as travelling with pets inside the continental US. Some airlines don’t even allow it.  I get that the pet has deep and emotional meaning (since they told me when the pet got loose, but not during the first 2/3 of the story) but I’ve heard for years that it just isn’t worth the potential quarantine to take them for short trips.  What’s that you say?  My rant is based on rumor?  No. When I realized I was feeling the rant, I thought to myself, “Huh, have I been wrong all these years?” so I looked it up.  Can it be done? Sure, but it is not a casual proposition.  There are strict regulations.  At the very least, if you have done all the pre-work and asked for the special gold ticket, you have to have to pet inspected.  Due to the necessary pre-shots, etc, a kitten or puppy can’t fly to HI until they are 10 months old.  It simply takes that long for all the shot series.  Most pets (emphasis on MOST) require a 5 day quarantine, but it could last as long as 120 days.  Doesn’t seem worth it for a short trip.  BUT WAIT, the author also decided that our hero should have his buddy bring another pet for a surprise visit.  The fact that buddy also has family in HI at least explains spending money (Tickets to HI are not cheap) for him, but casually dropping off pet #2 was ridiculous.

Rant the second:  These gorgeous 21 year olds think it is funny to, first, be mistaken for a famous couple (Ok.  Sure.)  but also to then go to some length to impersonate this couple.  Both of whom are a bit older than 21.  Famous couple lady is 38 and famous guy is 50.  Really?  Sparkly clothes, sharpie marker tattoo and sunglasses can fool your best friends?  ha ha ha ha.  You are just so clever h/h.  Why didn’t I think of that.

  16. DonnaMarie says:

DO NOT PASS UP THE JULIE JAMES!!!!! I got an ARC thru GR and it was seventeen kinds of amazing.

  17. K F says:

I finished It Happened One Wedding this morning (downloaded it yesterday) and I am still squeeing. I love Julie James so hard.

  18. FairyKat says:

I just read the Julie James—absolutely the funny, smart, witty, sharp writing you are expecting. I did feel like I’ve missed a book in the series though, and reading up on her website, I think she wrote it, threw it out and rewrote the book to be this thing of beauty. I just hope she goes back and fills in that story, because I WANT TO READ IT AND I WANT TO READ IT NOW. So good.

  19. marjorie says:

“fenceposts for the squee corral”—oh, BRAVA.
