Book Wicked Nights

Wicked Nights by Gena Showalter is $1.99. This is book 1 in Showalter's Angels of the Dark series, which is connected to her Lords of the Underworld series. This series involves paranormal elements, demons, angels, and is heavily steeped in mythology.

Leader of the most powerful army in the heavens, Zacharel has been deemed nearly too dangerous, too ruthless–and if he isn't careful, he'll lose his wings.

But this warrior with a heart of ice will not be deterred from his missions at any cost…until a vulnerable human tempts him with a carnal pleasure he's never known before.

Accused of a crime she did not commit, Annabelle Miller has spent four years in an institution for the criminally insane. Demons track her every move, and their king will stop at nothing to have her.

Zacharel is her only hope for survival, but is the brutal angel with a touch as hot as hell her salvation–or her ultimate damnation?

Book Thoroughly Kissed

Thoroughly Kissed by Kristine Grayson is $2.99 right now. I like that there's are different flavors of paranormal, from the dark and intense to the light and comical – this is one of the latter. Sleeping Beauty was put into a coma and is now awake in the present day, teaching the history of her own era at a university. This is part of a fractured fairy tale series, and this book was originally published in 2001.

Emma awakens to an entirely different world than the one she lived in a thousand years ago, and although she's the real Sleeping Beauty, her life is no fairy tale.

After parting ways with her supposed Prince Charming, she's determined to be a normal girl—she hides her magic and swears off kissing strange m

en.But her gorgeous boss Michael knows there 's something unusual about Emma, and he thinks she's as infuriating as she is beautiful. Now Emma needs to teach Michael a lesson, which means mastering her magic.

She knows she's flirting with danger, but after one look at Michael's perfect lips, all she can think is, “What's another thousand years … ?”

Book Immortals The Calling

Immortals: The Calling by Jennifer Ashley is $2.99, as are other books in the Immortals series right now. This book was originally published in 2005 and is being reissued by the author, who says the new editions have been “revised and edited.” The series focuses on a set of immortal warriors, and reviewers liked the combination of paranormal battle and intense emotion.

Also: I'm fascinated by the depth of the cover model's wax regimen. Shouldn't there be…something above the skyline? No?

Amber Silverthorne, gorgeous contemporary witch in a deserted Seattle warehouse, casts spells to find her sister Susan's murderer, when she is attacked by an ancient demon. Just as abruptly, the demon is attacked by a tall, hunky guy flashing a sword, who later claims to have “just been passing through.”

Adrian is an Immortal, a son of Isis in third Dynasty Egypt, and ultimate loner. It doesn't take much for Adrian and Amber to begin a passionate affair, but it will take a lot longer for this ultimate control freak to surrender his heart.

As Amber looks for her sister's murderer, Adrian continues to search for his brother Tain, missing for 700 years. But the hunts cause severe complications. Amber assembles a multi-talented team—a dragon, a werewolf, a powerful vampire, a movie star, a police detective, a worldwide coven of good witches, Immortal brothers and their mother goddess—to meet the challenge.

Book The New Spanish Table

The New Spanish Table by Anya von Bremzen is $2.99 digitally right now. Dread Pirate Rachel recommended this in the comments of an earlier Books on Sale post this week, saying she bought the hell out of it -and I did, too.

If you like Spanish food, especially regional-specific dishes (I do!), this cookbook will make you happy. And if you like the history of regional foods, and information about wine, cheese, and Mediterranean flavors, you'll like this. I particularly like this review, which talks about a cooking club that made some of the dishes in this book – I love this idea, cookbook book clubs that make the recipes together. Aw yeah.

Amazing things are happening at the new Spanish table. The sweet-hot pequillos of Navarra turn up in a classic potato tortilla (the beloved omelet found in every tapas bar). Purple-veined Cabrales butter melts across a thick grilled T-bone. Honey is drizzled over eggplant “fries.” Chocolate meets olive oil, strawberries meet fennel, vanilla meets salmon. Mysteriously delicious savory ice creams–balsamic vinegar, thyme, saffron–garnish soups and seafoods.

Casual, quietly inventive, steeped in regional traditions but unmistakably modern, Spain is the new France and Italy, an epicenter of contemporary Mediterranean cooking with a wealth of alluring flavors and preparations.

Written by Anya von Bremzen–an award-winning food writer who first fell in love with Spain in the early 1980s, introduced the Catalan genius and three-star chef Ferran Adria to American readers in 1997, and today spends close to half her year in the country–The New Spanish Table delivers all the pleasures of this exhilarating cuisine.
It's a rustic table: Baked Fish with Romesco Potatoes. It's elegant: Rack of Lamb with Pistacchio Pesto. It's exquisitely simple: Smoky Fried Almonds with sea salt, an addictive marriage of four ingredients. It's for entertaining–dozens of tapas, paellas and cazuelas (named after the Spanish terra-cotta casseroles)–and, with its glorious comfort foods like fried eggs with crackling, crispy whites, and luscious unusual Rice Pudding Ice Cream, perfect for cozying up, alone.

Most of all, The New Spanish Table is an irresistible, festive celebration of flavors from a culture absolutely passionate about food, wine, and the pleasures of an excellent meal.

    Tortilla de paaataaataaaa!  Si!

  2. Eliza Evans says:

Am I the only one thinking the carnal pleasure the angel has never known in Wicked Nights is buttsex?

  3. Miranda says:

It looks like they’re in the wrong position for that, Eliza 🙂

I think she’s putting him in a sleeper hold. Maybe he’s learning about autoerotic asphyxiation.

  4. An says:

The Grayson books are great. I totally recommend this series. It is one of the best retold fairy tale series out there.  Seriously.

  5. Melissa says:

Miranda, I think that position would work if she uses a strap-on. 😉

  6. Miranda says:

True. That, er, ramification hadn’t occurred to me. The sleeper hold could still apply though.

  7. Bona says:

I’m glad you can enjoy Spanish food! The good thing about the book is that it looks as if clear regional differences are stated. Because that’s very true, you don’t eat the same here in Northern Spain than on the Mediterranean coast or in Andalusia. Although I have to recognize that only part of it is good for veggies.
And about Ferran Adrià, well if you have any chance to read or see any documentary about him, do it! He’s not very good at speaking or explaining himself but he is really really amazing. The prototype of thinking ‘out of the box’. It’s not about just food anymore. It’s pure creativity.
Gwyneth Paltrow -who spent a year in Spain during her youth-, made Spain… on the road Again, a 2008 American food and travel series, with Chef Mario Batali. It was very funny. I recommend it if you have the chance to see it on your TV.
