Book THe Billionaire Next Door

The Billionaire Next Door by Jessica Bird is currently $2.99 digitally. Bird is better known by her other pen name, JR Ward.

No vahmpihres in this book, but it's a lovely contemporary romance, and was part of the 2008 DABWAHA Tournament.

Take-no-prisoners deal-maker Sean O'Banyon ate Wall Street financiers for lunch.

So why was he losing sleep over a fresh-scrubbed nurse in old jeans and a too-big T-shirt? Maybe it was those warm green eyes. Or the way she blushed when he got personal.

There was no denying the serious chemistry between them.

But sooner or later Lizzie would learn his deep, dark secrets: First, he had trust issues. And second–he'd rather not go into the whole “family” thing.

He didn't “do” relationships…but amazingly, Lizzie made him want one anyway.

Book Deliver Me

Deliver Me by Farrah Rochon is .99c. This is a contemporary romance with an ob/gyn who asks a new hospital physician to pose as his girlfriend to get his mother off his back for awhile – that always works according to plan, right? This was originally published by Dorchester and has been re-released by the author.

Monica Gardner is starting over. The broken-hearted St. Louis native has nothing left at home any longer: her future is being an ER doctor at a New Orleans hospital. Her first day makes for a bumpy start as she continually runs into handsome but irascible Dr. Elijah Holmes—a man who could make her change her mind about finding true love.

For years, Dr. Eli Holmes has been living up to his own high expectations—and is burning himself out in the process.

The only time this “Super Doc” ob-gyn slows down is to notice the beautiful eyes of a newcomer, Dr. Gardner. He’s pleased to know that she’s more than just a pretty face, she’s also an ace physician. When they work together, sparks fly.

But with both Monica and Eli trying to hard not to fall in love, they realize they can’t resist this affair of the heart.

Book Sloppy Firsts

RECOMMENDED: Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty is $1.99 at Amazon right now (come on over, price matching fairies?). Amanda recommends this book, saying I feel like this book was an integral part of my adolescence. This is a YA novel that has spoken to a LOT of readers since its publication in 2001.

My parents suck ass. Banning me from the phone and restricting my computer privileges are the most tyrannical parental gestures I can think of. Don’t they realize that Hope’s the only one who keeps me sane? . . . I don’t see how things could get any worse.

When her best friend, Hope Weaver, moves away from Pineville, New Jersey, hyperobservant sixteen-year-old Jessica Darling is devastated. A fish out of water at school and a stranger at home, Jessica feels more lost than ever now that the only person with whom she could really communicate has gone.

How is she supposed to deal with the boy- and shopping-crazy girls at school, her dad’s obsession with her track meets, her mother salivating over big sister Bethany’s lavish wedding, and her nonexistent love life?

Book The Coming Dark

The Coming Dark by Erin McCarthy is $2.99. This is a paranormal YA about an exorcist – and there's a boarding school, too, for those who have “boarding school” on their catnip list. This book has a 3.75 average at GR.

Liana Matthews’ mother was murdered when she was two, with her in the room. Raised by her grandmother, she has always been the school freak, but when she starts spewing Latin and exorcising demons she didn’t know existed, she has no choice but to change schools or be tossed in a mental hospital.

Her guardians say she is being chased by a demon, and the safest place for her and her best friend, Abby, is in a boarding school for demon hunters in training, where she’ll have a bodyguard in the form of a brawny seventeen year old named Chase.

Yet training as an exorcist and living in constant fear of the demon Axel who attacked her the night she came to school, has Liana unsure who she should trust. With her grandmother in a nursing home and Abby locked away in another building, the one person Liana finds herself wanting to spend time with isn’t a person at all… but a demon.

Darius is supposed to be her final exam, the demon she has to exorcise to graduate, yet there is something about him that intrigues her and she knows she can’t kill him. Especially since he says he has information about her father, who she’s never met.

With rumors about her mother’s murder still swirling, Axel trying to kill her, and her feelings torn between the guy who is sworn to protect her and the demon who may endanger her, Liana has to face THE COMING DARK.

Nothing that interests me today, but I’m happily chugging through “The Admiral’s Penniless Bride” from yesterday. It has some great banter, and the Admiral is so socially inept – it’s really funny. 😛 He’s a far cry from the “smooth-talking rake” we usually see, and he’s all the more real and delightful for it. 🙂

  2. Llaph says:

RE: Billionaire Nextdoor . Sean remembers going to Butch’s house in Southie when growing up . so no escape and resistance is futile
I wish she finished series—the brothers looked interesting and I was looking forward to the little brother’s book.

Wide Open by Deborah Coates is on sale for 2.99 at Amazon. I just finished this book and I LOVED IT. Urban fantasy on the South Dakota prairie (rural fantasy?), with the start of a romance. Hallie died for 7 minutes while serving in Afghanistan and can now see ghosts, including the ghost of her sister.

  4. Alaina says:

I got Deliver Me awhile ago and honestly thought it was awful. I could not finish it and that happens to me very rarely. I just thought the writing was really weak and the characters were cheesy and poorly developed. I know it’s only 99 cents but I thought I would share my thoughts.

  5. Jewel says:

@Alaina – I have to second your opinion of Deliver Me. I was about to go dig it out of the archives of my kindle to see how far I got, but I know it wasn’t terribly far. The writing was boring, nothing compelling about the characters. Save your 99 cents for another book on sale.

    @Llaph:

That’s awesome. I wonder if Bhuhtch would make an appearance if the series had continued!

    Somehow, his old friend looked…lahrger.

    @Alaina & Jewel:

Oh, bummer. That stinks. But thank you for sharing your opinion!

I immediately glommed The Billionaire Next Door.

    1) This book is so much better than I have previously believed this type of Harlequin romance to be – is this atypical for the brand, or what? I found this to be surprisingly well-done in terms of characterization and the trauma backstory of the male character, and not at all the “Blah blah blah he’s a BILLIONAIRE and there are private islands” stuff one might imagine.

    2) The heroine is a person who has all her emotional stuff figured out, and she has and holds good boundaries, and she is kind and compassionate but not a martyr, and – and, and, WOW. A book about an adult woman. That’s all.

    3) So the hero has two brothers (who I assume were supposed to get their own books), and one is an NFL player, and the oldest one, Mac, is some kind of stern Special Forces fellow, and… embarrassingly, I am now really kind of bummed that I can’t go read his book. (It always bothers me that the military romances out there are generally an excuse for volleyball scenes a la Top Gun, a lot of buff shirtless dudes palling around and talking about the sex shenanigans they’ve been getting up to with their lady from a previous book…. and not anywhere near enough stern, gravelly-voiced men who can grow magnificent beards! Sigh.)

  8. vee says:

I read the Jessica Bird categories when they came out and they were above average as were her stand only titles.

Do you ever wonder what happened to the person at Harlequin that didn’t renew her contract?

  9. Sheila says:

I read Billionaire Next Door last night and thought the hero was AWFUL, self-centered prick, and yes he has MAJOR ISSUES with trust… don’t see these two lasting. BTW the heroine is a doormat.  ugh waste of money.

  10. leftcoaster says:

I’m another one who couldn’t finish “Deliver Me”. I bought it because I get excited about non-white protagonists in books, any books really, but especially romance. I found the writing super clunky and cliched.

I read “Sharing Space” a month ago and loved it, well worth the $4 it’s going for on amazon.
