Book Back Across the Styx

Back Across the Styx by Karalynn Lee is a fantasy romance novella, and features the children of Hades and Persephone, and the adopted child of Charon, the ferryman across the river Styx. This story was nominated in the novella category as well, and is .99c.

Hades and Persephone have a son, and he's feeling trapped in the underworld. Bion's one solace is his friend since childhood, Myrinne, a mortal girl who was adopted by Charon the Ferryman.

When Myrinne is kidnapped during a jailbreak from the underworld, Bion's rescue becomes a chance to experience life in the sunlit lands. He promptly falls in with Spartans who are desperate enough to raise the dead to fight a looming Persian army.

But meddling in a war the gods have sworn not to interfere with isn't likely to put him in Zeus's good graces — and Bion needs the god's favor to help Myrinne, who's turning out to mean even more to him than he realized.

A Tale of Love and War in Ancient Times.

Nona Raines - His Kind of WomanHis Kind of Woman by Nona Raines is a DABWAHA nominee in the GLBT category, and is only available from the publisher Loose-Id. That said, they've dropped the price to .99c to celebrate the nomination of the book – yay! This is a romance between a man and a trans woman, and it deals with bullying and remorse, though reviewers say it deals with both topics in an effective and light tone.

When Roy Girard went looking for Victor Varrano, he never expected a woman to answer the door. He soon discovers that Victor is now Venetia. Roy's startled, but even more surprised by his attraction to her. As they spend time together, he doesn't want to let her go. But she's sure to dump him when she learns his secret.

Venetia's falling hard and fast for Roy. But when she learns that his brother was the bully who tormented her in high school, she's shattered. She can't wrap her head around the fact that the man who made such amazing love to her could so completely betray her trust.

Book His Very Own Girl

His Very Own Girl by Carrie Lofty was nominated for the DABWAHA 2013 and it's currently on sale for $1.99 digitally. This is a historical romance set during WWII, with a pilot heroine and a medic hero. It has many glowing reviews and a 4+ star average on GR. Have you read this book?

After the War took the lives of Lulu Davies's parents and her fiancé, she promised herself she would guard her heart carefully and concentrate on her great love–flying the biggest and best airplanes in the sky. Lulu is a pilot in the British civilian air force, ferrying planes around Great Britain and keeping her eye on a coveted spot in a training program for world-class pilots. She's perfectly content to strive for greatness in the skies, and dance with a few GIs on the way.

Brawny, quiet American medic Joe Weber signed up with the paratroopers to escape his checkered past; he's hoping that jumping out of planes and patching up soldiers will earn him respect and a hopeful future. Joe's first real test of medical skill is on a pilot whose plane takes a hard landing in a training field; after rushing to the crash scene, he is stunned to come face-to-face with a gorgeous Rita Hayworth lookalike. And when the two cross paths at a dance hall a couple weeks later, he can't resist the urge to find out more about this spirited, dark-haired beauty.

Their flirtation breaks all of Lulu's rules, but dance by dance, week by week, walk by walk, she finds herself falling in love with this honest, vulnerable man on the run from his demons. But as Lulu and Joe's undeniable attraction gains momentum, World War II steadily intensifies toward D-Day. Only time and hope will tell if the two lovers can overcome the past to form a beautiful life together in peace-time.

  1. Barb in Maryland says:

I’m one of the many readers who quite enjoyed ‘Geek with the Cat Tattoo’.  It’s cute and the two leads have believable baggage and tackle it fairly well.  and the price is just right.

I also enjoyed the Lofty WWII book.  I thought she did a good job of presenting the hero’s change in attitude toward the heroine’s job and I found the HEA believable.

  2. Melissa says:

Just picked up the Lofty book. Romance and WWII has been my crack lately.

  3. Susan says:

I am sooo behind.  The Lee and Lofty books are still in my TBR pile, but I did read the Weir book (novella?) when it came out and loved it—what a steal at 99 cents.
