Book One Reckless Summer Toni Blake

RECOMMENDED: One Reckless Summer by Toni Blake is $1.99 right now. This is the first book in her Destiny series, which takes place in a small town in Ohio. This is one of the first small town romances, and there is some HOT ACTION up against a tree in the first chapter or two. Don't let the adirondack chair porn cover fool you – there's some steam with a good girl coming home after a humiliating divorce and a former bad boy hiding across the lake for really good reasons.

I talked a lot about my initial misconceptions about this book in my review (B-):

The plotline seemed very, very tempting: he had the hots for her, and she thought he was cute, but that was in high school when they were so far apart socially there may as well have been bodies of water between them. Now they’re even further apart – and can’t stay away from each other. And that’s the charm and power of the book: it’s so not what I expected and I enjoyed it all the more for continually surprising me. I’m grabbing people and saying, 'No, really, it’s in OHIO. And I really liked it!'

The perfect daughter. The perfect prom queen. The perfect wife.

Jenny Tolliver's been the good girl all her life, and it's gotten her nowhere. Now that her marriage has been busted up by her cheating ex, she's decided it's time to regroup and rediscover herself. This summer she's headed back to her hometown of Destiny, Ohio, to the very lakeshore cottage where she grew up, to figure out what life holds in store for her next. She never dreamed the answer would be Mick Brody, Destiny's #1 hellraiser.

He comes from the wrong side of the tracks (or in his case, the lake), and he's landed in hot water more times than he can count. He's exactly the kind of guy Jenny's always kept her distance from . . . but soon the good girl and the bad boy are caught in a raw heat that's out of control.

Too bad Mick's got a secret that threatens to tear them apart and ruin Jenny's perfectly, passionately reckless summer .

Book Running Back Allison Parr

Running Back by Allison Parr is free right now. This is a contemporary romance set against a mythical football team in New York. The first book was Rush Me, which didn't thrill me, though Parr has some skill with creating multidimensional women and men who don't reveal themselves all at once. In this story, the heroine is an archaeology student who thinks she's discovered a lost civilization in Ireland, and it's located on the land owned by a star NFL running back (hence the title). This book has a 3.79 average on GR. Have you read it?

Natalie Sullivan is on the verge of a breakthrough most archaeology grad students only dream of: discovering a lost city. Her research points to a farm in Ireland, but to excavate she needs permission from the new owner: the Michael O'Connor, popular NFL running back.

On TV Mike seems so charming and good-natured that Natalie figures getting his cooperation will be a breeze. So she's not prepared to deal with the arrogant—and adamantly opposed—man she meets in person. Or the way one look from him sends shivers down her spine…

Determined to kick-start her career, Natalie travels across the Atlantic and finds herself sharing an inn with Mike, who has come to Ireland in search of his roots. She tells herself her interest is strictly professional, but the more she gets to know him, the harder it is to deny her personal attraction to the sexy sports star. And when Mike confides why he refuses to allow the dig, Natalie must decide if she can follow her heart without losing sight of her dreams

Book Just Say Yes Phillipa Ashley

Just Say Yes by Phillipa Ashley is $2.99 right now. This is British contemporary romance aka “chick lit' romance – BritCon? BritRomCon? BritRomComLit? Anyway, it's that.

The heroine is proposed to live on television on a reality show and says no – earning public emnity like whoodamn. The cover is… very strange given the description. Those who liked it love the humor, particularly the heroine's.

Lucy Gibson needs to get away. When her good-looking, popular boyfriend Nick Laurentis, winner of reality TV show Hot Shots, proposes to her on air she's stunned — into silence. Every girl loves a romantic gesture, but she's just not ready for that kind of commitment.

With the press hounding her as the one who callously broke Nick's heart, Lucy escapes her London flat to seek refuge in an isolated Cornwall cottage.

But little does she realise that life down there will be far from uncomplicated!

Book If You Want Me Kayla Perrin

If You Want Me by Kayla Perrin is also .99c. This is contemporary comedy with a formerly overweight and shy heroine who has been reborn as a movie star, and the guy she had a crush on all through school. This book has a 4+ star average, too.

Alice Watson's no longer the shy, overweight girl everyone dissed back in high school — everyone, that is, except Marcus Quinn, her one-time best friend who ended up trampling all over her heart. Now, thirteen years later, Alice is tall, stunning, sensational…and a genuine movie star who goes by the name of Desirée LaCroix. And passion's flame starts smoking again when she sees that handsome Marcus still has it going on. But is it Alice or her famous Hollywood persona who's got his beautiful brown eyes wide open?

Marcus's own heart has gone through major achin' since back in the day. And the reappearance of Alice/Desirée seems to spell bigtime trouble. Still, this proud, sexy sista could make Marcus forget the pain and his promise not to let a fine face and figure turn his head ever again. And even though the lady's got drama — and there's serious danger doggin' her trail — this could be the time for cautious Marcus to commit to a perfect love that he once let get too far away.

For a second, I thought the description was “*mythological* football team”. As in, Tuatha De Dannan, or demi-gods.    (Someone, please write this, mythology is my catnip!).  ;)

White tailbacks, even Irish ones, are few and far between these days. Last great one I remember is John Riggins of the Washington Redskins. So right away I’m not feeling a vibe for “Running Back”.

Also I’m not sure I could read about a hero named Darrell – “Hi, I’m Larry; this is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl.”  Lol! That’s just me though …

    @Maria F:

Totally worth it, yes. The whole series is a wonderful example of the setting being so vivid it’s like you’re visiting. Especially in The Chocolate Kiss.

I read Running Back and loved it. I really like the way Parr shows us who the characters are over the course of the book instead of infodumping it. I was a little less positive about the first book, Rush Me, but they don’t need to be read in order. What really grabbed me about Running Back was Parr’ s dry sense of humor. I just kept laughing.
