Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Her Hair Has a Mind of Its Own

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

Mary is looking for a futuristic romance with…some hair. Really serious hair.

I have been trying to find this book on and off since probably the 80's or 90's.

This book is the reason I buy books and do not get from the library. I can (usually) at least find them on my own shelf.

Futuristic romance. Forbidden love. It has a lead female who has hair that is made up strands of light/filament maybe? She and the main lead are not allowed to be together. Maybe something about the last of thier class/race? Or maybe she is?

The scene that I remember is for some reason he has to carry her and her hair has a will of its own and wants to touch him.

I know it is not a lot to go by. Any ideas?

Do you recall this book? I hope it had foil or prism embossing on the cover. OH PLEASE EMBOSSING. OF HER HAIR.

Ann Maxwell’s (AKA Elizabeth Lowell) Fire Dancer? It is an unfinished series – I think there are a couple of books after this one:

“The Senyas dancers—they practiced their unique skills on their home planet, Deva, their smooth skin glowing with complex energy patterns as they learned the power dances and mentally mastered the elemental forces of Nature. And the Bre’n mentors—large, fur-covered humanoids, they were the only living beings who could control and channel the power of a Senyas dancer. Yet Bre’n and Senyas together could not save Deva from becoming a flaming inferno devoured by its own greedy sun.

Somehow two survived—Rheba the fire dancer and Kirtn, her Bre’n companion. Their world had died but they swore their people would not, and together they set out to search the star systems for others of their kind. But the twisted trail they followed soon forced them into the clutches of the evil Loo-chim, galactic slavers from whose stronghold no one had ever escaped alive…”

Ann Maxwell is right, but the book is is Timeshadow Rider. The two main characters have linked psionic gifts related to time, and when they touch, they have access to a world-busting level of power, which is the reason for the taboo.

Definitely Maxwell’s Fire Dancer books. If I remember right, Rheba thinks they can’t be together. They can, but Kirtn isn’t supposed to explain it to her. Since they are the last of their kind (or nearly so – they meet a couple others) there’s no one who can explain it to her. Her hair soaks up heat. It’s the series that got me into romance, although technically it was marketed as sci-fi first. Maddeningly, the series was never finished.

Wow! Y’all are 2 for 2! There are two more today, so stay tuned!

Dang it. I knew this one. I have both the Fire Dancer books (Fire Dancer, Dancer’s Luck and Dancer’s Illusion – I REALLY wish she’d come back to these) and Timeshadow Rider on my shelf.

If you liked Timeshadow Rider, try the Dancer series and Maxwell’s Change.

I have a request of my own: If anyone knows of any Fire Dancer fanfic, could you point me to it. If Maxwell/Lowell wasn’t going to finish the series, it was my hope that some fan out there would, but I’ve never been able to find anything. I don’t think Rheba and Kirtn ever even got to admit their feelings to each other, much less kiss.

  7. Elise Logan says:

They kissed. In Fire Dancer, they convinced the Loo Chim they had to exchange fluids – so there was definitely kissing.

Also, this book is definitely Timeshadow Rider. In the Dancer series, they weren’t forbidden to touch, but in Timeshadow Rider the two MCs weren’t supposed to touch [five touching five is the symbol of catastrophe and all that].

The best thing about these stories is the world building. This is a brilliant, fantastic, awesome universe. I’m so sad she hasn’t come back to it.

@LG there is one fanfic on Archive of Our Own. I haven’t read it so have no idea of what it adds to the saga but here is the link

I knew this one! The first time I’ve ever known one and I wake up too late in Hawaii to be of any use to anyone.
I loved this series, I really, really wanted to know what would happen next. I think I’ll have to write my own fan fiction. 🙂

Add me as someone who knew this one right off, and loved the book. How I wish AM/EL had written more of these!

  11. LG says:

@Elise Logan- They kissed?! How did I miss that? I’ve been thinking a reread was in order, but now it definitely is.

@Merrian – Nice! Something for after my reread.
