I love your catnip alarm bells because they’re mine too, I couldn’t click “buy” fast enough! I’m not a huge contemporary fan but I will make huge exceptions for beards, winter athletes and snowed-in stories. I’m so happy to live in Canada where these things are occasionally a reality! Though sadly not all at the same time.
I’m so glad I bought the Harlequin anthology—I’ve only read “Coming in from the Cold” so far but it absolutely broke me. In a good way. It was hot and angsty and fascinating and dark at times, hilarious at others (not that those two things are mutually exclusive). I hope the other three are just as good—even if they aren’t, I’m pleased with my decision to ignore my book budget and go for this deal, and I hope this strategy pays off (and will thus keep happening).
Sigh, was disappointed by the other stories. Should have seen that one coming. The writing in the second story was so stilted/clunky/predictable/just plain dumb that I had to force myself to finish chapter one before deciding it was time to move on. But, of course, once I’d been dissatisfied with one story it was harder for the others to hold my interest…the third was interesting but the chronology was all over the place and the heroine’s actions were, too. Like, when the hero and heroine kissed it faded to black and then you saw the heroine reminiscing about it the next day while she was driving and it makes her almost hit someone while going through a four-way stop. Except she’s a vet, so theoretically she’s an intelligent human being who knows how to safely operate a moving vehicle. And then they go to Vegas and the good-girl heroine magically transforms into Sexy Femme Fatale by which I was not amused. So I moved on to the fourth story, which seemed to be a small-town mystery with romance. And by then I was just bored (but, again, coming from a stance that predisposed me toward that mood).
This is probably way too much text but I needed to modify the completely positive comment from yesterday—knowing what I do now, I probably would have just watched for “Coming in from the Cold” to be on sale individually (although the Amazon box set is 17c cheaper than the individual stories will be). Oh well. But now I know that Sarina Bowen is one to watch!
