Books on Sale: Goldfinches, Laura Griffin Suspense, and Wendig Urban Fantasy

Some really interesting options in the books on sale department today!

Book The Goldfinch - a bird peeking through a ripped piece of paper that looks a lot like an inverted vagina

The Goldfinch is 75% off at AMZ, BN and Kobo. This book is still in hardcover, but the $7.50 price is the lowest ebook price I've seen yet. This was The Book of 2013 – it won a crapton of awards, and readers describe it as tense and compelling and wonderfully well crafted. It's part mystery, part literary fiction and part coming of age novel.

A young boy in New York City, Theo Decker, miraculously survives an accident that takes the life of his mother. Alone and determined to avoid being taken in by the city as an orphan, Theo scrambles between nights in friends’ apartments and on the city streets.

He becomes entranced by the one thing that reminds him of his mother, a small, mysteriously captivating painting that soon draws Theo into the art underworld.

Book Blackbirds a black and white drawing of a woman, and her hair is made up of many many birds.

Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig is $1.99 today and it's being pricematched. WOO! This is urban fantasy about a woman, Miriam Black, who knows when everyone is going to die. She gets tangled up with a dude whose death foretells her own, and tries to stop it. It's dark, gritty, violent urban fantasy, not terribly romantic but much praised by some readers.

Miriam Black knows when you will die.

She’s foreseen hundreds of car crashes, heart attacks, strokes, and suicides.

But when Miriam hitches a ride with Louis Darling and shakes his hand, she sees that in thirty days Louis will be murdered while he calls her name. Louis will die because he met her, and she will be the next victim.

No matter what she does she can’t save Louis. But if she wants to stay alive, she’ll have to try.

Book Unspeakable Laura Griffin - a landscape in reds and oranges with ice

Unspeakable by Laura Griffin is a Kindle Daily Deal (KDD) today at $1.99. So far, no price matching (fingers crossed!). This is romantic suspense, emphasis on the suspense, and yes, of COURSE there is a serial killer. No word if there's a cereal killer, too.

Elaina McCord Wants to Find a Killer.

But He's Already Found Her.

Elaina McCord's dream of being an FBI profiler is threatened by her very first case – investigating a string of murders near a Texas beach resort. The victims, all young women, were drugged and brutally murdered, their bodies abandoned in desolate marshland. Elaina's hunch – met with disbelief by local police – is that these are only the latest offerings from a serial killer who has been perfecting his art for years, growing bolder and more cunning with each strike.

True-crime writer Troy Stockton has a reputation as an irresistible playboy who gets his story at any cost. He's the last person Elaina should trust, let alone be attracted to. But right now Troy, along with the elite team of forensics experts known as the Tracers, is her only ally in a case that's turning dangerously personal. A killer is reaching out to Elaina, taunting her, letting her know how ruthless he is and how close he's getting. Now it's not just her career that's in jeopardy – it's her life….

It figures.  I just read Goldfinch a few weeks ago (at full price).  Doesn’t that always happen?  But what a read.  So gritty and compelling.  The Laura Griffin book is a great deal (but I’ve already read that particular book).  Enjoy her work a lot.  I ought to stop buying books at full price and just wait for the deals!

Thanks for sharing.  Maybe next time I’ll get luckier!  😉

Fair warning—“Blackbirds” (and its two sequels, “Mockingbird” and “The Cormorant”) are really awesome urban fantasy, but they are very, very dark and very, very violent. Some friends of mine have been turned off by that, and by Miriam’s being rather an anti-heroine. I like them a lot, but I imagine the violence could be triggering for some readers.
