Book Tempt me at Twilight - a close up of a woman's side and shoulder

Tempt Me at Twilight by Lisa Kleypas is $3.99 at most vendors. This is book 3 of the Hathaways series, and has all the Kleypas good parts: wonderful hero and heroine, evocative dialogue, and incredible writing.

He was everything she'd sworn to avoid.

Poppy Hathaway loves her unconventional family, though she longs for normalcy. Then fate leads to a meeting with Harry Rutledge, an enigmatic hotel owner and inventor with wealth, power, and a dangerous hidden life. When their flirtation compromises her own reputation, Poppy shocks everyone by accepting his proposal—only to find that her new husband offers his passion, but not his trust.

And she was everything he needed.

Harry was willing to do anything to win Poppy—except to open his heart. All his life, he has held the world at arm’s length…but the sharp, beguiling Poppy demands to be his wife in every way that matters.

Still, as desire grows between them, an enemy lurks in the shadows. Now if Harry wants to keep Poppy by his side, he must forge a true union of body and soul, once and for all..

Book Maybe This Time - a teacup with steam in a heart shape above a red upholstered chair

Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie is $3.99 right now. This is a re-imagined The Turning of the Screw, and I read it when it came out. In my review, I gave it a C because the more I thought about it, the more certain things really didn't work for me, but that said, if I go near the book and read a page, I'm in for at least 5 chapters. The writing is seriously sticky and absorbing, and the chemistry between the characters is pretty incredible.

Andie Miller is ready to move on in life. She wants to marry her fiancé and leave behind everything in her past, especially her ex-husband, North Archer. But when Andie tries to gain closure with him, he asks one final favor of her before they go their separate ways forever. A very distant cousin of his has died and left North as the guardian of two orphans who have driven out three nannies already, and things are getting worse. He needs a very special person to take care of the situation and he knows Andie can handle anything.

When Andie meets the two children she quickly realizes things are much worse than she feared. The place is a mess, the children, Carter and Alice, aren't your average delinquents, and the creepy old house where they live is being run by the worst housekeeper since Mrs. Danvers. What's worse, Andie's fiancé thinks this is all a plan by North to get Andie back, and he may be right. Andie's dreams have been haunted by North since she arrived at the old house. And that's not the only haunting.

What follows is a hilarious adventure in exorcism, including a self-doubting parapsychologist, an annoyed medium, her Tarot-card reading mother, an avenging ex-mother-in-law, and, of course, her jealous fiancé. And just when she thinks things couldn't get more complicated, North shows up on the doorstep making her wonder if maybe this time things could be different between them.

If Andie can just get rid of all the guests and ghosts, she's pretty sure she can save the kids, and herself, from the past. But fate might just have another thing in mind….

Book Song of Achilles - Enhanced EditionREADER RECOMMENDED: Song of Achilles, by Madeline Miller, is a $1.99 KDD at Amazon.

When I posted this deal at an identical price a few weeks ago, it was because Heather S told me about it. She had many glowing things to say about this book. She wrote:

This book is a fantastic read – great for fans of historical fiction, fans of m/m romance (Miller more than gives the romance between Achilles and Patroclus the credit it deserves), and people who just love a great story. I loved this book so much that I read two chapters and bought it new… in hardcover… in the bookstore… the week after it came out. Madeline has been compared to Ancient Grecian fiction queen Mary Renault – and the praise is well-deserved.

Enter the world of Homer's ancient Greece with the enhanced e-book edition of The Song of Achilles. This edition lets you further engage with this compelling story through video interviews with Madeline Miller and Gregory Maguire, bestselling author of the Wicked series, clips from the audio book at the start of each chapter, an illustrated map, and a pop-up gallery featuring over 40 images and descriptions of the characters, armor, and ships found in the book.

The legend begins…

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles' mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.

Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller's page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career.

  1. Heather S says:

I have four cats, so if anyone needs kitty fur to make crafts, I have plenty of extra! LOL That qualifies as the weirdest book I’ve seen today, no problem.

I’m so stoked about “The Song of Achilles” being on sale again. ^_^ Such an awesome book. I reread it recently and it was just as good as I remembered. 🙂

Also on sale is another of my favorite books: “Just Kids” by Patti Smith, $1.99, is a KDD.

  2. Lostshadows says:

From the description, I assume that should be The Turn of the Screw for the Crusie book.

  3. SB Sarah says:

LOLOL Yes. I transposed “The Taming of the Shrew” with “The Turn of the Screw.” Moar coffee clearly needed!

  4. Margaret says:

This may be a basic question, but what is ‘KDD’? Kindle Direct… Deal? Don’t see it on Amazon and doesn’t pop up easily on Google. Thanks for your help, and I totally dig your site! 🙂 Picked up Achilles based on your tip, as it’s been on my wish list!

  5. CarrieS says:

Aww Maybe This Time is the first book I ever reviewed for Smart Bitches!  I won a copy in the contest and the catch was that if you won, you have to write a review.  I was so excited I worked on that review for a week!

I find I like the book better on second readings because this first time I read it I expected more of a straight-forward romance, while actually the romance is the weakest part of the book.  Same experience with Wild Ride.

  6. DonnaMarie says:

@Margaret it’s Kindle Daily Deals and you can find them at www. Amazon. com/KindleDailyDeal.  Be prepared for the time suck, there’s a lot to look at.

  7. Heather S says:

I must note that there are two versions of the Kindle book – the regular version and the enhanced one. The regular version is the one that’s on sale today for $1.99. In the past it has been the enhanced one that was on sale.

  8. SB Sarah says:

@Heather – oops, thanks for catching that!

  9. Crystal F. says:

I lent ‘Seduce Me at Sunrise’, by Lisa Kleypas to a friend who isn’t normally into romances, and she enjoyed it a lot. I found the other four Hathaway novels at the used bookstore, and lent them to her for now while I get caught up on the other books on my TBR list. Something tells me I’ll have a hard time getting them back! 😉

  10. Jinni says:

Ok, I’m going to warn folks that Mr. Harry Rutledge is the only hero I’ve wanted to murder with my bare hands in the last few years. Even though I knew the book had a HEA, I kept hoping Harry would die. Alas, wasn’t to be.
