Book Highland Warrior - a close up of a naked chest, done with red overtones. He look sunburned

Highland Warrior by Monica McCarty is $1.99, and this book has all the good reviews – including a 4+ star average on GR. Readers really enjoyed the medieval Scottish setting, with feuding families and forbidden kisses and kittens in trees. Have you read this? Do you recommend it?

The ruthless enforcer of Scotland's most powerful clan, Jamie Campbell will use any means necessary to vanquish lawlessness and unrest among the feuding Highland clans. Seduction is a game as easily played as subterfuge, but when Jamie poses a as suitor to a rival clan's daughter in order to expose treason, the line between duty and pleasure is suddenly blurred. Ebony-haired, ruby-lipped Caitrina Lamont defies him, denies him, and arouses him like no other woman.

Caitrina has no intention of forsaking her beloved father and doting brothers for a husband–especially a hated Campbell. But Jamie's raw, sensual strength and searing kiss melt her resistance. When her idyllic world is shattered, Caitrina's only hope to save her clan lies in the arms of Jamie Campbell, the enemy she holds accountable for its ruin. Can their tenuous truce, born in the velvet darkness of passionate nights, forge a love as strong as the sword that rules the Highlands?

Book The Dressmaker - a close up of a violet bustle on the back of a dress

The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott is $1.99 right now. This is historical fiction/romance connected to the Titanic. The heroine boards the ship as a maid to Lady Duff Gordon, who was a real person. Some reviewers loved the adventure and the time period, while others disliked the romance and had problems with historical accuracy. Have you read this one?

Just in time for the centennial anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic comes a vivid, romantic, and relentlessly compelling historical novel about a spirited young woman who survives the disaster only to find herself embroiled in the media frenzy left in the wake of the tragedy.

Tess, an aspiring seamstress, thinks she's had an incredibly lucky break when she is hired by famous designer Lady Lucile Duff Gordon to be a personal maid on the Titanic's doomed voyage. Once on board, Tess catches the eye of two men, one a roughly-hewn but kind sailor and the other an enigmatic Chicago millionaire. But on the fourth night, disaster strikes.

Amidst the chaos and desperate urging of two very different suitors, Tess is one of the last people allowed on a lifeboat. Tess’s sailor also manages to survive unharmed, witness to Lady Duff Gordon’s questionable actions during the tragedy. Others—including the gallant Midwestern tycoon—are not so lucky.

On dry land, rumors about the survivors begin to circulate, and Lady Duff Gordon quickly becomes the subject of media scorn and later, the hearings on the Titanic. Set against a historical tragedy but told from a completely fresh angle, The Dressmaker is an atmospheric delight filled with all the period's glitz and glamour, all the raw feelings of a national tragedy and all the contradictory emotions of young love.

Of COURSE Amazon would do this after I’d bought one of the HDX 8.9’s for the hubby’s birthday. SIGH.

On other matters, I very much enjoyed “The Dressmaker.” I’m not sure there was enough of a romance in there to annoy anyone, LOL, because it was very much a sidelight to the rest of the story. I thought it much more a peek into the lives of women at the time—not many choices, but then we all knew that—class differences, the fallout from an international tragedy, and a glimpse of the times.

I didn’t go in expecting it to be a retelling of “Titanic.” But I was intrigued enough by the fact that Lady Duff Gordon was a real person that I researched her some more. I’ve recommended the book to several people, all of whom have liked it.
