Books on Sale: Sandra Brown, Newbery Award Winners, and Steampunk!

Book Breath of Scandal Breath of Scandal by Sandra Brown is $2.99 at Amazon, and $4.99 elsewhere. If you like romantic suspense, you'll probably really like Brown's writing. I love some of her books, and I'm, as you probably know, not a suspense fan.  This book was originally published in 1991.

On a rainy Southern night, Jade Sperry endured a young woman's worst nightmare at the hands of three local hell-raisers. Robbed of her youthful ideals and at the center of scandal and tragedy, Jade ran as far and as fast as she could.

But she never forgot the sleepy “company town” where every man, woman, and child was dependent on one wealthy family.

And she never forgot their spoiled son, who, with his two friends, changed her life forever. Someday, somehow, she'd return, exact a just revenge — and free herself from fear, and the powerful family that could destroy her.

Book A Study in Silks

A Study in Silks by Emma Jane Holloway is .99c right now. This is a steampunk mystery with a heroine who is the niece of Sherlock Holmes.

Evelina Cooper, the niece of the great Sherlock Holmes, is poised to enjoy her first Season in London Society. But there’s a murderer to deal with—not to mention missing automatons, a sorcerer, and a talking mouse.

In a Victorian era ruled by a council of ruthless steam barons, mechanical power is the real monarch and sorcery the demon enemy of the Empire. Nevertheless, the most coveted weapon is magic that can run machines—something Evelina has secretly mastered. But rather than making her fortune, her special talents could mean death or an eternity as a guest of Her Majesty’s secret laboratories. What’s a polite young lady to do but mind her manners and pray she’s never found out?

But then there’s that murder. As Sherlock Holmes’s niece, Evelina should be able to find the answers, but she has a lot to learn. And the first decision she has to make is whether to trust the handsome, clever rake who makes her breath come faster, or the dashing trick rider who would dare anything for her if she would only just ask.

Book The One and Only Ivan

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and Patricia Castelao is $1.99 today as a KDD. This is middle-grade book about a gorilla who lives at an arcade, and the baby elephant who befriends him. This book won the 2013 Newbery Medal from the ALA. Plus, if you buy the book, you can then purchase the Audible copy for $1.99 as well. This book is tagged for ages 8-12, grades 3-7. Today's Kindle Daily Deals feature many middle-grade novels at $1.99.

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. In fact, he hardly ever thinks about it at all.

Instead, Ivan thinks about TV shows he’s seen and about his friends Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. But mostly Ivan thinks about art and how to capture the taste of a mango or the sound of leaves with color and a well-placed line.

Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better.

Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan’s unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope.

Oh, Ivan. He lived at the B&I in Tacoma, WA for most of his life, and for a short while my father worked there and helped to take care of him. When my grandfather had a pretty bad heart attack, he’d come and sit next to Ivan’s cage and the gorilla would reach through the bars and hold his hand.

I’m so glad I clicked through to find out about this book—it’s going onto the family bookshelves immediately.

Just clicked through to buy Study in Silks.  That sounds like fun, and I was glad to see it is a big fat book.  It would have to be, to cram in all the different elements.  :-)

I wouldn’t recommend “Breath of Scandal”. It’s actually the book that took Sandra Brown off my autobuy list. It tripped a trigger BIG TIME, and I additionally hate when authors use the same vocabulary in rape scenes that they use in the making love scenes.  The only reason I didn’t throw it at a wall was that I was renting at the time and didn’t want to lose my damage deposit.

On the other hand, A Study in Silks, I’m all over that.
