Books on Sale: Jennifer Estep’s Bigtime Box Set, and Giving Gets You 50% Off

Book Big Time Box Set

Jennifer Estep's Bigtime series is available for a limited time as a box set for .99c. This set includes all four Karma Girl novels, plus a holiday novella. This series is different from Estep's Gin Blanco series: the Bigtime books are more comedic, and deal with superheroes instead of assassins. This is sort of a blend of comic book parody, chick-lit, paranormal, and urban fantasy. These were originally published in 2007, and the books' ratings average between 3.5 and 3.8 on GR.

KARMA GIRL—BOOK ONE
After a surprising betrayal, investigative reporter Carmen Cole decides to devote her life to unmasking superheroes and ubervillains in Bigtime, N.Y. But her actions put her in the middle of a battle between the Fearless Five superhero team and the ubervillains of the Terrible Triad.

HOT MAMA—BOOK TWO
Fiona Fine is the hottest fashion designer in Bigtime—literally. That's because she moonlights as Fiera, a superhero with superstrength and volatile, fire-based powers. And with two new ubervillains in town, Fiona will need all of her powers just to survive.

JINX—BOOK THREE
Thanks to her unwanted superpower, fashion designer Bella Bulluci may be the luckiest woman in Bigtime. But luck can be good or bad, and it seems like just as many embarrassing things happen to Bella as do positive ones. But Bella is going to need every bit of her good luck when she becomes the target of two ubervillains intent on stealing a prize sapphire.

A KARMA GIRL CHRISTMAS—HOLIDAY STORY
On Christmas Eve, Carmen Cole is assigned to guard toys, clothes, food, and more that are intended for needy children and their families. An ubervillain plans to steal and then sell the toys to the highest bidder, but Carmen is determined to stop the villain—and make sure that this Christmas is a happy one for all the kids who are counting on her.

NIGHTINGALE—BOOK FOUR
Anxious brides. Drunken businessmen. Panicked partygoers. As Bigtime’s premiere event planner, Abby Appleby is capable of handling almost any crisis, but even she’s not prepared when she finds herself in the middle of a fight between superhero Talon and his ubervillain nemesis Bandit.

Book Alice Walker - Three BooksAlice Walker – The Color Purple Collection: The Color Purple, The Temple of My Familiar, Processing the Secret of Joy – $16.49

The Color Purple is Walker’s stunning, Pulitzer Prize–winning novel of courage in the face of oppression. Celie grows up in rural Georgia, navigating a childhood of ceaseless abuse. Not only is she poor and despised by the society around her, she’s badly treated by her family. As a teenager she begins writing letters directly to God in an attempt to transcend a life that often seems too much to bear. Her letters span twenty years and record a journey of self-discovery and empowerment through the guiding light of a few strong women and her own implacable will to find harmony with herself and her home.

In The Temple of My Familiar, Celie and Shug from The Color Purple follow the lives of a brilliant cast of characters, all dealing in some way with the legacy of the African experience in America. From recent African immigrants, to a woman who grew up in the mixed-race rainforest communities of South America, to Celie’s own granddaughter living in modern-day San Francisco, all must come to understand the brutal stories of their ancestors to come to terms with their own troubled lives.

Possessing the Secret of Joy portrays Tashi’s tribe, the Olinka, where young girls undergo circumcision as an initiation into the community. Tashi manages to avoid this fate at first, but when pressed by tribal leaders, she submits. Years later, married and living in America as Evelyn Johnson, Tashi’s inner pain emerges. As she questions why such a terrifying, disfiguring sacrifice was required, she sorts through the many levels of subjugation with which she’s been burdened over the years.

Book James Herriot - Three Books

James Herriot – All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful – $14.99

Perhaps better than any other writer, James Herriot reveals the ties that bind us to the natural world. Collected here are three of his masterpieces—All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful—which have been winning over animal lovers everywhere for almost fifty years.

From his night visits to drafty barns during freezing northern England winters, to the beautiful vitality of rural life in the summertime, to the colorful menagerie of animals—and their owners—that pass through his office, Herriot vividly evokes the daily challenges and joys that come with being a veterinarian.

Witty and heartwarming, these classic books also feature an original introduction from the author’s son, Jim Wight, and bonus archival photos courtesy of the Herriot estate.

I love James Herriot. I read and reread that whole series again and again as a child, and as an adult, I introduced my husband to them. They are hilarious, touching, heartwarming, tragic, and wonderful. If by some miracle you haven’t encountered these books before, I strongly recommend them.
