Books on Sale: Historical Romances - And Books for Grade School Readers

Book A Seduction at Christmas

A Seduction at Christmas by Cathy Maxwell is $1.99 right now. This is the first book in her Scandals and Seductions series, and it's a historical romance with a good amount of comedy, and a faux guardian/ward setup.

She never expected it would come to this.

Desperation and an empty stomach forced Fiona Lachlan to agree to a plan that ended up luring the wickedly notorious Duke of Holburn into trouble. Everything went terribly wrong, and now she has found herself posing as his ward. And while she swore nothing could make her desire a scoundrel, even if he was a duke, she is now drawing ever closer to the one man she cannot have.

“Beware of Innocence!”

Beware of innocence: The Duke of Holburn had spent years heeding this warning, and in doing so, managed to avoid the virginal young ladies who had been put in his path. But now his wild ways have gotten him into real danger. There are killers at the door and a temptingly beautiful woman in his arms. He is about to find himself seduced…and he isn't quite sure he wants to resist this time.

Book The Devil's Heart

The Devil's Heart by Cathy Maxwell is a KDD at $1.99, but there are a few other books of hers that are also on sale, too. This is the third book in the Chattan Curse series, and is a blend of light paranormal with historical romance. The other books in the Chattan Curse series have been on sale previously, but this one wasn't often included, so you may have the others already!

They call her the Unattainable. Lady Margaret Chattan spurned every suitor for her hand, vowing never to marry. The only way to break the curse plaguing her family for two centuries is this ultimate sacrifice. But now her brothers' lives are in danger. Determined to save them, she risks her very soul by traveling into the heart of the highlands to battle a force that has transcended time.

Heath Macnachtan is not superstitious. Laird of the most independent, nonconforming, madly infuriating clan ever to grace Scotland, he believes he has his hands full. And then, a woman lauded as one of the most beautiful in England, arrives on his doorstep with wild accusations and a mystical quest . . . one that just might help him discover who murdered his own brother.

But the real danger for Heath and Margaret is not a supernatural foe, but a very real love that could destroy them both.

Book The Trouble with Being a Duke

The Trouble with Being a Duke by Sophie Barnes is on sale for $1.99. This historical is the first in the At the Kingsborough Ball series, and is a Cinderella tale. Elyse reviewed it earlier this year (C+) and while she really liked the Cinderella parts, there were other parts of the plot she found jarring:

“I enjoyed The Trouble With Being a Duke as a Cinderella story. I wanted Anthony to win Isabella because I love the idea of the poor girl from Moxley getting the handsome prince. That prince was irritating as shit sometimes though, and sometimes the characters made choices that baffled me.”

Sometimes happily ever after . . .

Anthony Hurst, Duke of Kingsborough, knows the time has come for him to produce an heir. But first he must find a bride. When he meets the most exquisite woman at his masquerade ball, he thinks his search is over . . . until the breathtaking beauty runs off. With few clues other than her figure, her scent, and the memory of her kiss, Anthony must find his mystery lady.

. . . needs a little bit of help.

Isabella Chilcott can scarcely believe it: she is finally at the Kingsborough Ball. As a child, she dreamed of dancing a waltz here, and now, thanks to a gorgeous gown she’s found in the attic, Isabella is living her fairytale fantasy. And she’s waltzing with the Duke of Kingsborough himself! But she must escape before he discovers her secrets . . . for she is not who she pretends to be, and falling in love with Prince Charming is the last thing she can allow herself to do . . .

Book Miss Child has Gone Wild

RECOMMENDED: Miss Child has Gone Wild by Dan Gutman is .99c. This is the first book in the My Weirder School series by Dan Gutman.

Freebird, my older son, adores the Dan Gutman My Weird/er School series. There are at least three series (I think – they all have similar names, mostly I think to torment me) and there are a few on sale for .99c right now.

Freebird says he likes them because they are funny, they are about kids his age (elementary school -Freebird is 8)(no, I have no idea how that happened either) and because he likes AJ, even though Freebird thinks he is more like Andrea because he likes school, and AJ hates school. These are terrific books for young readers just getting into chapter books.

My Weirder School weirder than ever!

The third grade has won a weird contest, so they get to go on a field trip to the zoo. That's how they meet Miss Child, the weirdest zookeeper in the history of the world. She thinks animals are smarter than people! She thinks elephants can paint pictures! She keeps snakes in her pockets for fun! Guess who's going to wind up in a cage with a lion?

Book Mr. Harrison is Embarrassin

Mr. Harrison is Embarrasin is book 2 in the My Weirder School series. All the books feature AJ, Andrea, their friends, and, per Freebird's reminder, they are also very funny.

My Weirder School weirder than ever!

Mr. Harrison, the tech guy at Ella Mentry School, can fix anything: computers, phones, pencil sharpeners. He can also build anything, like a solar-powered umbrella. What a nerd! But when the power goes out in the school, everyone is yelling and screaming and freaking out in the dark. Can Mr. Harrison save the day?

Book Mrs. Lilly is Silly

RECOMMENDED: Mrs. Lilly is Silly is #3 in the Weirder School series. All of these books are quick reads, and Freebird has been konwn to read them one after the other, then start over at the beginning and read them again. He really likes these books. (Can you tell?)

My Weirder School weirder than ever!

It’s Career Day at Ella Mentry School! Mrs. Lilly is a reporter for the local paper. She’s going to come help the kids make their own newspaper, all about the school. What will happen when A.J. and the gang become investigative reporters? Who’s going to get fired? Who’s going to end up in jail?

  1. I second the rec for the Weird School series. My 11 yo devoured the set when she was younger and they’re still comfort reads for her even though she’s too old for them. My 8 yo loves them too. And I agree – the series names are made just to confuse us into buying the same book more than once 🙂

  2. LisaJo885 says:

Thanks for the Weirder School recommendations! My 8 year old niece is a reader, so I bought all three and sent them to my mom’s Kindle account for her. Maybe she can read them while riding to Disneyland on Monday.
