Books on Sale: A Macomber Audiobook, Plus a Thriller, Historicals, Mysteries, and More!

Book The Reckoning

The Reckoning by Alma Katsu is $1.99 right now. This is book 2 in her trilogy that started with The Taker, and is part thriller, part paranormal romance saga. The Taker has been on sale every now and again, so you might already own it.

Lanore McIlvrae is the kind of woman who will do anything for love. Including imprisoning the man who loves her behind a wall of brick and stone.

She had no choice but to entomb Adair, her nemesis, to save Jonathan, the boy she grew up with in a remote Maine town in the early 1800s and the man she thought she would be with forever. But Adair had other plans for her. He used his mysterious, otherworldly powers to give her eternal life, but Lanore learned too late that there was a price for this gift: to spend eternity with him. And though he is handsome and charming, behind Adair’s seductive façade is the stuff of nightmares. He is a monster in the flesh, and he wants Lanore to love him for all of time.

Now, two hundred years after imprisoning Adair, Lanore is trying to atone for her sins. She has given away the treasures she’s collected over her many lifetimes in order to purge her past and clear the way for a future with her new lover, Luke Findley. But, while viewing these items at an exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Lanore suddenly is aware that the thing she’s been dreading for two hundred years has caught up to her: Adair has escaped from his prison. He’s free— and he will come looking for her. And she has no idea how she will save herself.

Book 1225 Christmas Tree Lane

1225 Christmas Tree Lane by Debbie Macomber is today's Audible Daily Deal – this would make a terrific gift for the person you know who loves heartwarming books, or who loves to listen to fiction in audiobook form. This is an unabridged performance of 6+ hours by Sandra Burr. The daily deal price is $2.95 – spiffy! This is book 12 in Macomber's Cedar Cove series, and it has a 3.9-star average on GR.

The people of Cedar Cove know how to celebrate Christmas. Like Grace and Olivia and everyone else, Beth Morehouse expects this Christmas to be one of her best. Her small Christmas tree farm is prospering, her daughters and her dogs are happy and well, and her new relationship with local vet Ted Reynolds is showing plenty of romantic promise.

But…someone recently left a basket filled with puppies on her doorstep, puppies she's determined to place in good homes. That's complication number one. And number two is that her daughters, Bailey and Sophie, have invited their dad, Beth's long-divorced husband, Kent, to Cedar Cove for Christmas. The girls have visions of a mom-and-dad reunion dancing in their heads.

As always in life—and in Cedar Cove—there are surprises, too. More than one family's going to have a puppy under the tree. More than one scheme will go awry. And more than one romance will have a happy ending!

Book Night Train to Memphis

Night Train to Memphis by Elizabeth Peters is one of today's KDD books priced at $1.99. This is a Vicky Bliss mystery (the fifth in the series) and has a 4+ star average on GR. Elizabeth Peters was a much-loved mystery writer and her books are frequently mentioned by readers as among the best.

An assistant curator of Munich's National Museum, Vicky Bliss is no expert on Egypt, but she does have a Ph.D. in solving crimes. So when an intelligence agency offers her a luxury Nile cruise if she'll help solve a murder and stop a heist of Egyptian antiquities, all 5'11″ of her takes the plunge.

Vicky suspects the authorities really want her to lead them to her missing lover, the art thief and master of disguises she knows only as “Sir John Smythe.” And right in the shadow of the Sphinx she spots him. . . with his new flame.

Vicky is so furious at this romantic stab-in-the-back, not to mention the sudden arrival of her meddling boss, Herr Dr. Schmidt, that she may overlook a danger as old as the pharaohs and as unchanging. . . a criminal who hides behind a mask of charm while moving in for the kill.

Book Marci's Desire

Marci's Desire by Sara Luck is today's “nook Daily Find” at $2.99 and is being price matched elsewhere. This is a historical romance set partially in the American west. Many readers adore the unique history and the heroine, though Lynn from AAR (whose tastes and mine very often align) said the book was also very slow in developing. Have you read this book?

As a new mode of transportation sweeps America, a spirited socialite and her Western hero embark on the free-wheeling journey of their lives.

Two different worlds . . .

The daughter of a high-ranking Treasury official, as game for mastering the new contraption called a bicycle as she is for studying art and photography, Marci Winters turns heads inside Washington, D.C.’s dazzling social circles. When the college educated beauty is caught in an intimate encounter with political operative Stanton Caldwell, a crushing scandal threatens, forcing an appalled DeWitt Winters to send his daughter far away.

One thrilling passion . . .

Armed with her camera, Marci arrives in the grandeur of Yellowstone National Park and discovers a natural wonder: Lieutenant Myles Cade McDowell. Stationed at Fort Yellowstone to protect its wildlife from poachers, Cade hears of a test to be conducted across 400 miles of demanding terrain to prove the worthiness of an Army bicycle corps. Believing bikes could streamline how the park is patrolled, Cade joins the great ride himself. Capturing the adventure in a photo essay is a spitfire from the East who also captures Cade’s heart—but can she keep pace pedaling alongside this muscular and competitive military man? The lieutenant will soon discover that the open frontier— like love itself—is full of surprises!

Book The Spice Necklace

The Spice Necklace by Ann Vanderhoof is a travel memoir with recipes and is a KDD at $1.99 today. I read her previous book, An Embarrassment of Mangoes, which was an account of her year or so living aboard a sailboat with her husband in the caribbean. This book chronicles a different trip where she learned different dishes from the various islands while sailing. What I like about Vanderhoof's writing is that you're there with her – on the sailboat, on the ocean, traveling with the book. I may not want to sell all I have and move onto a sailboat full time, but I know a bit about what it's like to do so, and it's fascinating. Plus recipes!

While sailing around the Caribbean, Ann Vanderhoof and her husband Steve track wild oregano-eating goats in the cactus-covered hills of the Dominican Republic, gather nutmegs on an old estate in Grenada, make searing-hot pepper sauce in a Trinidadian kitchen, cram for a chocolate-tasting test at the University of the West Indies, and sip moonshine straight out of hidden back-country stills. Along the way, they are befriended by a collection of unforgettable island characters: Dwight, the skin-diving fisherman who always brings them something from his catch and critiques her efforts to cook it; Greta, who harvests seamoss on St. Lucia and turns it into potent Island-Viagra; sweet-hand Pat, who dispenses hugs and impromptu dance lessons along with cooking tips in her Port of Spain kitchen.

Back in her galley, Ann practices making curry like a Trini, dog sauce like a Martiniquais, and coo-coo like a Carriacouan. And for those who want to take these adventures into their own kitchens, she pulls 71 delicious recipes from the stories she tells, which she places at the end of the relevant chapters. The Spice Necklace is a wonderful escape into a life filled with sunshine (and hurricanes), delicious food, irreplaceable company, and island traditions.

(readershaming) I bought that Debbie Macomber book last Christmas just so I could stare longingly at those chocolate Lab puppies. I am a sucker for puppies, especially puppies that don’t chew, pee on things or require very large bags of food on a regular basis.

    Our 90 pound chocolate Lab—who thinks he’s a lap dog—finds this highly amusing. (/readershaming)

AH! Elizabeth Peters! My original auto-buy.. and Night Train to Memphis is one of my absolute favorites!

  3. Kelly S. says:

    I love Elizabeth Peters books!

  4. I tried to read The Taker earlier this year and I just couldn’t do it.  Alma Katsu’s writing was pretty good (except for the weird shift in POV from 1st to 3rd person), but my problem was the fact that there was a gang rape and the protagonist ends up kind of falling for the leader of the group that did it to her.  (This was a very graphic scene—I don’t think the rape was actually depicted, but its aftereffects were, including a miscarriage and an inability of her to control her bowel.)  None of this stuff was at all integral to the story and I felt that it was there simply for shock value.

I have a review of the book on my blog, so if you click on my name you should be able to see it.
