Smart Bitches Thanksgivukkah Celebration - 3rd Night

open book and menorahGot leftovers? Got a day off? (I hope so!)

We're continuing the 2013 Smart Bitches Thanksgivukkah Celebration with more giveaways! And also piles of leftovers because leftover Thanksgiving is the best kind of leftovers!

Today's giveaway? I'm giving away one Google Nexus 7″ Tablet – 32 GB.

I love a good GB. GB's are awesome.

Book Nexus 7 Tablet

Why a Nexus 7? Because Hubby has one and he loves it. I asked him why, so I could share with you his opinion, and here's what he says:

First of all, I use the Nexus 7 as my primary reading device in addition to my primary sitting-on-the-sofa browsing device.  I am not someone who wants a dedicated reading device and I like to have my content in as few locations as possible.  Before I got the Nexus 7 I had a 10-inch tablet.  When I bought that, it was my intention to, as much as possible, eliminate the need to have a laptop at all, which turned out to be delusional.  Given the way I function personally and professional, I need three total devices:  a phone, a tablet and a laptop.  While considering packing for a long trip, I realized that the old 10-inch tablet was just heavier than I wanted to schlep around, so I bought the Nexus 7.

I love the Nexus 7 because it weighs next to nothing.  It's easy to hold in one hand in either portrait or landscape, and the back is matte and rubbery so it doesn't slip.  I have small hands and I can swipe pages in reading apps with the same hand in which I'm holding the device.  I love it because it's crazy fast and snappy.  I rarely if ever experience lag.  If you want to watch video, or listen to music, it actually has speakers on both ends so you get better quality sound than most tablets.  It's too big to fit in most pants pockets (although it will fit in some baggy sweatpants), but it easily fits in a jacket pocket.  It is exactly the right size and weight for everything I do technology-wise that doesn't require a computer.  Last but not least, it's a Nexus.  This may not apply to many of you, but I am an Android enthusiast.  Because it's a Nexus and has an unlockable bootloader (will spare you too much geekspeak), I can tinker with the way it looks and the way it runs without having to do too much back-office hacking.  Even if you are not a hacker, by virtue of being a Nexus, this tablet will get system updates from Google faster than most devices, which means it will be running the newest version of Android most of the time.

Hubby isn't lying – the Nexus is incredibly lightweight. Plus, it's running Android, which means that you can connect to the Google Play store (or the Market or the Reckoning or the Dismemberment or whatever they're calling their app store these days) and download all the things you like to use to consume books: Kindle, nook, Kobo, Audible, and the Overdrive Library App, too. I am the person who does have a dedicated reading device, so I don't have a need for a small tablet, but if I wanted one, I'd want this over the iPad, easily.

All you have to do to enter is drop your details in the widget below!

INFORMATION that likely shall be REPEATED. Because it's IMPORTANT.

The widget asks for your first and last name, and after our test over the weekend, I realized that I can't customize that part, and first and last names are required by the widget. However, that information is not posted publicly. As for the data collected, it comes to me, and I would not ever sell or distribute it. I only use it to contact the winner, and will delete the giveaways from the back end once they're done. I won't sign you up for any newsletters (you can do that on your own, for the daily RSS feed and the weekly ebooks on sale newsletters) and I wouldn't ever sell your information. Super-duper-up-and-down, double-downward-facing-dog-dare and also pinky swear.

The widgets make it easier for me to efficiently and legally run a giveaway, especially eight of them in a row. If you have any problems, or if your computer doesn't load it correctly (I understand that within Twitter browsers it can be finicky) please feel free to contact me, and I can help you out.

Standard disclaimers apply: I'm not being compensated for this giveaway. Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. It is, alas, your responsibility to determine whether the device will work where you are, as I can't personally deliver and test it, much as I'd like to because I know you probably have very tasteful curtains and some excellent food in the house. Must be over 18 and ready to read and rock the casbah. However, if you've a date in Constantinople, she'll be waiting in Istanbul.

This giveaway will be open for 24 hours, until 1AM ET tomorrow. At 1am, another giveaway will go live, one for each night of Thanksgivukkah. Each giveaway will be a device meant for reading or listening or both, and yes, this is a lot of fun. Also, yes, I have lost my freaking mind. 🙂

Happy Thanksgivukkah!

I think I found a loophole…. I entered, told my husband, he entered, I clicked on his tweet and entered again?

  2. kkw says:

I do have a date in Istanbul! If I’m in Constantinople, maybe that’s why I keep getting lost?

  3. Cheryl McInnis says:

Ohhh…a friend of mine has a Nexus tablet and loves it very much. Fingers crossed!

  4. LML says:

    Whoo!  An unlockable bootloader!

  5. Melonie says:

I love that it’s your husband’s squee-cannon that goes off for this one (or, is a woot-cannon more manly?) My husband has been saying for awhile that if he caves and buys a tablet – it will be a Nexus. If I win I know who is finding this under the tree 😉

  6. KatieF says:

I just got one of these for my son for Christmas (shh, he doesn’t know about it) but after reading your husband’s review I want one for myself!

Thanks Sarah, not just for the giveaways but for the great community you have built here.

  7. SB Sarah says:

@LML Doesn’t “unlockable bootloader” sound a bit nefarious?

@KatieF: That’s really kind of you – thank you! And I hope your son LOVES the Nexus!

@Melonie: I just said, “Do you have a Squee Cannon or a Woot Cannon?”
    Hubby: “a What?!”

  8. ECSpurlock says:

If I were to win this it would be a perfect gift for my hubby. He’s still recovering his manual dexterity after his stroke and it sounds like this would be much easier for him to use than the tablet he has now. Even if I don’t win, he’s got a birthday coming up in February, I’ll see if I can’t save up for one for him.

  9. canadacole says:

I don’t know what unlockable bootloader means, but it sounds sexy and my geek hubby is sure to know what it is and get excited over it.  If I won it would be a family gift (and maybe I could get my kindle back from the kids!).

  10. Vicki says:

I like that he wanted to live without his laptop. Isn’t that everyone’s goal and are we not all equally unable? For my part, there is the work computer, tied to the EHR (and if you don’t know what that is, be thankful), the laptop for my life, and the ereader. I am looking at a tablet with the above goal of not having to take the laptop everywhere but have not committed. Maybe I’ll win. If not, I will look at this one more closely, thanks to your hubby’s recommendation.

  11. Xahne says:

My husband has just come back from the Black Friday sale at Asda (UK) to say, sadly, that no Nexus 7s were available, and that I need to wait until the January sales.

It looks like a wonderful piece of kit, precious, and we wants one!

I do wonder, however, for how long it would be ‘mine’, before said Husband and children ‘borrowed’ it.

  12. Sarah's Hubby says:

@Vicki:  No, the tablet never really did replace the laptop.  I work from home a lot in the evenings, and although I can log in to work on a tablet, it really isn’t practical for heavy document editing.  I will say that I can use the tablet for about 85-90% of my non-work related needs.  On vacation I can bring only the tablet and log on to work from there in a pinch.  I bought the cheapest laptop I could find because I don’t really use it for anything other than work and fantasy sports.

  13. Sarah's Hubby says:

  14. laj says:

    OOH I want one!

Thanks for the fantastic holiday fun!

  15. Sophia says:

I might have to wrestle my husband if I win this. I hope I win. *giggles*

  16. Jean Lamb says:

I have to admit that I already have number of reading devices (including some elderly Palm Pilots, my phone, the Kindle)…but I am trying to sucke-er, urge my husband to read on tablets and screens, and this tablet sounds like it would work.

  17. Aislynn says:

I love my android tablet!  If I win – I’m giving this one to my hubby so he’ll stop stealing mine 😉 haha

  18. Rebecka says:

I have one of these in an online shopping cart right this minute and I’m about to pull the trigger. Merry Christmas to ME!
If I win this little darling, I will have twins. One for me and one for my BFF. Or maybe my brother… hmmm….
Thanks for all the great book recommendations, awesome woman.

  19. Elaine Normandy says:

I entered even though I already have one.  In the unlikely event that I win, it will make a great gift for someone.

  20. Misty Gee says:

I am entering because i dont have one and mu daughter is wanting one and it will make a great christmas present for her

  21. April Vrugtman says:

Our curtains are really only serviceable and most of the good leftovers are gone by now but you’re welcome to visit if you don’t mind sharing the couch with a dog and a cat!

  22. Sandra says:

Love that widget! Seriously.  Love your giveaway too 🙂

  23. azteclady says:

You host the bestest giveaways (and disclaimers!) ever, seriously.

Mind you, I have no idea what an unlockable bootloader may be, but I’m sure I could find out, if I won.

    Thank you!
