Books on Sale: Pulitzer Winners, Urban Fantasy, Audio Biographies and More

Book The Interpreter of MaladiesThe Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri is $2.99 right now. This collection of short stories won the Pulitzer Prize.

Navigating between the Indian traditions they've inherited and the baffling new world, the characters in Jhumpa Lahiri's elegant, touching stories seek love beyond the barriers of culture and generations.

In “A Temporary Matter,” published in The New Yorker, a young Indian-American couple faces the heartbreak of a stillborn birth while their Boston neighborhood copes with a nightly blackout. In the title story, an interpreter guides an American family through the India of their ancestors and hears an astonishing confession.

Lahiri writes with deft cultural insight reminiscent of Anita Desai and a nuanced depth that recalls Mavis Gallant. She is an important and powerful new voice.

Book Dark Awakening Dark Awakening by Kendra Leigh Castle is one of the Kindle Daily Deal books today at $1.99. This is book one in the Dark Dynasties series, and is urban fantasy with all the accompanying elements like vampire, shape shifters, magic and shirtless dudes in leather on the cover.

Well, I don't know that it's leather. It could be vegan PVC faux leather, but I'm betting leather.

For centuries, shapeshifting vampire Tynan MacGillivray has prowled the night as an outcast, valued only for his ferocious hunting skills. When a feud among the immortals escalates into all-out war, he is ordered by his ruthless queen to locate a Seer-a human woman with a special gift-who can secure victory for their clan.  Book FearlessFearless: The Undaunted Courage and Ultimate Sacrifice of Navy SEAL Team Six Operator Adam Brown is today's Audible Deal of the Day. This is an unabridged biography of the late Adam Brown, a Navy SEAL killed in action in Afghanistan. The running time is 10+ hours, and it's $3.95. This biography focuses on Brown's life and the way faith and determination shaped him.

The audiobook and the print/ebook both have many, many 4+ star reviews, and the book is described as powerful, moving, and inspiring, especially by those who were touched by the Christian elements of the book. This would be an ideal gift for a writer who is researching Navy SEALS, for example.

Fearless takes you deep into SEAL Team SIX, straight to the heart of one of its most legendary operators.

When Navy SEAL Adam Brown woke up on March 17, 2010, he didn’t know he would die that night in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan—but he was ready: In a letter to his children, not meant to be seen unless the worst happened, he wrote, “I’m not afraid of anything that might happen to me on this earth, because I know no matter what, nothing can take my spirit from me.”

Long before Adam Brown became a member of the elite SEAL Team SIX—the counterterrorism unit that took down Osama bin Laden—he was a fun-loving country boy from Hot Springs, Arkansas, whose greatest goal had been to wear his high school’s football jersey. An undersized daredevil, prone to jumping off roofs into trees and off bridges into lakes, Adam was a kid who broke his own bones but would never break a promise to his parents.

But after high school, Adam fell in with the wrong crowd, and his family watched as his appetite for risk dragged him into a downward spiral that eventually landed him in jail. Battling his inner demons on a last-chance road to redemption, Adam had one goal: to become the best of the best—a U.S. Navy SEAL.

An absorbing chronicle of heroism and humanity, Fearless presents an indelible portrait of a highly trained warrior who would enter a village with weapons in hand to hunt terrorists, only to come back the next day with an armload of shoes and meals for local children. It is a deeply personal, revealing glimpse inside the SEAL Team SIX brotherhood that also shows how these elite operators live out the rest of their lives, away from danger, as husbands, fathers, and friends.

Fearless is the story of a man of extremes, whose courage and determination was fueled by faith, family, and the love of a woman. It’s about a man who waged a war against his own worst impulses and persevered to reach the top tier of the U.S. military. Always the first to volunteer for the most dangerous assignments, Adam’s final act of bravery led to the ultimate sacrifice.

Adam Brown was a devoted man who was an unlikely hero but a true warrior, described by all who knew him as fearless.

I have to confess I haven’t read any of Jhumpa Lahiri’s books, but the movie based on her book “The Namesake” was great. It starts out with a newlywed couple(an arranged marriage), and takes them all the way through to their son growing up and going to college. There are some sad parts, but it’s beautifully done.
