Books on Sale: Mega Bestsellers, Excellent for Gifting!

Book Sycamore RowSycamore Row is the new John Grisham novel, and it's marked down to $^.59 — that's 77% off — at Amazon and at other retailers as well. As I've said on Twitter, if you have a family member who loves Grisham, you can gift this title immediately, or, on Amazon for example, set a date in the future for their gift. I love that feature at Amazon – my favorite kind of “set it and forget it.”

John Grisham takes you back to where it all began . . . John Grisham's A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. Now we return to that famous courthouse in Clanton as Jake Brigance once again finds himself embroiled in a fiercely controversial trial-a trial that will expose old racial tensions and force Ford County to confront its tortured history. Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.

The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

In Sycamore Row, John Grisham returns to the setting and the compelling characters that first established him as America's favorite storyteller. Here, in his most assured and thrilling novel yet, is a powerful testament to the fact that Grisham remains the master of the legal thriller, nearly twenty-five years after the publication of A Time to Kill

Book DoughnutDoughnut by Tom Holt is this month's Orbit digital deal at $2.99. This is a science fiction/fantasy novel with a lot of wry humor. I can think of a few people I know who would enjoy this book as a gift.

The doughnut is a thing of beauty.
A circle of fried doughy perfection.
A source of comfort in trying times, perhaps.
For Theo Bernstein, however, it is far, far more.

Things have been going pretty badly for Theo Bernstein. An unfortunate accident at work has lost him his job (and his work involved a Very Very Large Hadron Collider, so he's unlikely to get it back). His wife has left him. And he doesn't have any money.

Before Theo has time to fully appreciate the pointlessness of his own miserable existence, news arrives that his good friend Professor Pieter van Goyen, renowned physicist and Nobel laureate, has died.

By leaving the apparently worthless contents of his safety deposit to Theo, however, the professor has set him on a quest of epic proportions. A journey that will rewrite the laws of physics. A battle to save humanity itself.

This is the tale of a man who had nothing and gave it all up to find his destiny – and a doughnut.

Book Paper TownsPaper Towns by John Green is $2.90 digitally right now at many retailers. This is a YA mystery/romance that features a quirky female character and a road trip marked for “grade 9 and up.” It has 4+ star averages on many review sites. Have you read this one?.

Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs back into his life – dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge – he follows.

After their all-nighter ends and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues – and they're for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer Q gets, the less Q sees the girl he thought he knew.

Book Game of ThronesGame of Thrones: Song of Ice and Fire is $2.90 right now, as are books three and five (see below).

These would make a terrific gift for someone you know who loves fantasy, likes having their heart ripped out of their chest emotionally, or needs to escape into many many pages for many many hours – perhaps due to forced family proximity? Or, you can gift them to yourself for those same reasons.

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.

Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

 Book Storm of Swords

A Storm of Swords is book 3 and is $2.90. This book is after A Clash of Kings (book 2) (obviously). My husband loves this series, and reads the whole thing at least twice a year.

Here is the third volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King’s Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world. . . .

But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others–a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . . .

In a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics lead a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, to the greatest dance of all.

Thanks, SB Sarah,  for passing on the info about the ASOIAF books! The other two are roughly half-price, too.  eBook = so much more convenient to tote around than 1,000-page book.

Thanks for posting deals, I end up buying many of your suggestions.  I’m about to give into temptation and get the George RR Martin books.

As an FYI – your link to Paper Towns for Amazon doesn’t work (it tries to find Paper Towns by Tom Holt, instead of Paper Towns by John Green).  Also the price for Sycamore Row is $6.59, not $^.59.

I MUST start using my wish list correctly! I paid full price for the Grisham and here it is half price. The book was worth what I paid for it, but still – oh the irony!  :-(

I fell off Grisham a while ago, but I couldn’t resist a return to Time To Kill, which is both a favorite book AND a favorite movie. Also, when I bought it, I got a promotional credit which enabled me to buy from a selected group of thrillers for only 99-cents.
