Books on Sale: Medieval, Alaskan Memoir, and More

Book Take Good Care of the Garden and the Dogs A mix of books on sale! Hooray! Take Good Care of the Garden and the Dogs is a memoir and is on sale for $1.99 today, with some price matching going on (woo!). Heather Lende wrote her first book, If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name (see below), and while planning the book tour was hit by a truck, thus canceling her book tour – and creating the opportunity for a new book, this one continuing her accounts of Haines as well as adding meditations on faith.

The Alaskan landscape—so vast, dramatic, and unbelievable—may be the reason the people in Haines, Alaska (population 2,400), so often discuss the meaning of life. Heather Lende thinks it helps make life mean more. Since her bestselling first book, If You Lived Here, I’d Know Your Name, a near-fatal bicycle accident has given Lende a few more reasons to consider matters both spiritual and temporal.

Her idea of spirituality is rooted in community, and here she explores faith and forgiveness, loss and devotion—as well as raising totem poles, canning salmon, and other distinctly Alaskan adventures. Lende’s irrepressible spirit, her wry humor, and her commitment to living a life on the edge of the world resonate on every page.

Like her own mother’s last wish—take good care of the garden and dogs—Lende’s writing, so honest and unadorned, deepens our understanding of what links all humanity.

Book If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your NameIf You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name is Heather Lende's first book, a memoir about her life in Haines, Alaska, north of Juneau. Lende is a newspaper columnist and commentator for NPR. This book is NOT on sale ($9.24 at Amazon), but considering the sequel memoir is on sale for $1.99, I thought you might want both – or want to gift both for a total of about $12 or so – because reading in order is important right? Right.

Tiny Haines, Alaska, is ninety miles north of Juneau, accessible mainly by water or air—and only when the weather is good. There's no traffic light and no mail delivery; people can vanish without a trace and funerals are a community affair. Heather Lende posts both the obituaries and the social column for her local newspaper. If anyone knows the going-on in this close-knit town—from births to weddings to funerals—she does.

Whether contemplating the mysterious death of eccentric Speedy Joe, who wore nothing but a red union suit and a hat he never took off, not even for a haircut; researching the details of a one-legged lady gold miner's adventurous life; worrying about her son's first goat-hunting expedition; observing the awe-inspiring Chilkat Bald Eagle Festival; or ice skating in the shadow of glacier-studded mountains, Lende's warmhearted style brings us inside her small-town life. We meet her husband, Chip, who owns the local lumber yard; their five children; and a colorful assortment of quirky friends and neighbors, including aging hippies, salty fishermen, native Tlingit Indians, and volunteer undertakers—as well as the moose, eagles, sea lions, and bears with whom they share this wild and perilous land.

Like Bailey White's tales of Southern life or Garrison Keillor's reports from the Midwest, NPR commentator Heather Lende's take on her offbeat Alaskan hometown celebrates life in a dangerous and breathtakingly beautiful place.

Book Sanctuary of RosesSanctuary of Roses is a medieval novel published by author Colleen Gleason. It's .99c right now. Reviews indicate that this is an angsty marriage-of-convenience story, and is book 2 in the Medieval Herb Garden series.

Passionate romance and court intrigue, lords and ladies, knights and castles…

Madelyne de Belgrume has lived in secrecy in a hidden abbey for years. Her mad, abusive father, Fantin, believes she is dead. Lord Gavin Mal Verne wants nothing more than to seek revenge on Fantin de Belgrume…and he has the king's blessing to bring the man to heel.

After a battle with Fantin that leaves Gavin nearly dead, he accidentally comes upon a hidden abbey…and the beautiful, serene nun who helps to heal him…and touches his heart in more ways than one.

When Gavin discovers Madelyne's true identity, she is forced to leave the sanctuary of the abbey and appeal to King Henry for succor. To her horror, Madelyne learns she must either marry…or be returned to her father's custody.

Book Meet Me at the Cupcake CafeMeet Me at the Cupcake Cafe is $2.99 as a KDD and price matching seems to be happening, which is always spiffy. This is a contemporary romance “with recipes,” as the title says, set in London in…wait for it… a bakery cafe. The reviews (it has a 3.92 average at GR) say it's light, fun and very sweet.

Having grown up in an apartment above her Grandpa Joe's little bakery, Issy Randal has always known how to make something sweet. She's much better at baking than she is at filing, so when she's laid off from her desk job, Issy decides to open up her own little caf .

But she soon learns that her piece-of-cake plan will take all her courage and confectionary talent to avert disaster.

Funny and sharp, Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe is about how life might not always taste like what you expect, but there's always room for dessert!
