Books on Sale: Fantastic One-Day Deals

Book Finnikin of the RockIf you want Australians to make Good Book Noise®, mention Melina Marchetta. Finnikin of the Rock is the first book in the Lumatere Chronicles, and is 80% off at $1.99 today at Amazon.

This book has won a monster pile of awards, including the YALSA Award for Best Fiction for Young Adults, and appears on best-of lists from School Library Journal and the ALA, too. This is high fantasy YA, but the many 4- and 5-star reviews say it's marvelous for anyone who loves fantasy, emotional reads, incredible world building and strong characters.

Finnikin was only a child during the five days of the unspeakable, when the royal family of Lumatere were brutally murdered, and an imposter seized the throne. Now a curse binds all who remain inside Lumatere’s walls, and those who escaped roam the surrounding lands as exiles, persecuted and despairing, dying by the thousands in fever camps.

In a narrative crackling with the tension of an imminent storm, Finnikin, now on the cusp on manhood, is compelled to join forces with an arrogant and enigmatic young novice named Evanjalin, who claims that her dark dreams will lead the exiles to a surviving royal child and a way to pierce the cursed barrier and regain the land of Lumatere.

But Evanjalin’s unpredictable behavior suggests that she is not what she seems—and the startling truth will test Finnikin’s faith not only in her, but in all he knows to be true about himself and his destiny.

Book Blue Moon PromiseBlue Moon Promise is $2.99 for this month at all vendors. This is historical inspirational romance (and wow, that cover is beautiful and what do you mean people didn't wear skirts that big wandering out on the ranch? OF COURSE THEY DID BE QUIET) and reviewers really admired the strong heroine and the historical detail of the western setting.

Lucy Marsh's worldly resources are running out, but she's fiercely determined to care for her younger brother and sister. When she discovers that their father's recent death was no accident, Lucy is eager to leave town. She accepts a proxy marriage she believes will provide safe refuge. But trouble follows her to Texas where her new husband is surprised to suddenly have a wife and children to care for.

Nate Stanton always hoped he'd marry someday, but running the family ranch meant he had no time for romance. When his father deposits Lucy Marsh–a city girl–on his doorstep, with two siblings in the bargain, he expects ranch life will send her running on the first train out of town. But Lucy is made of tougher stuff than Nate imagined. When danger moves in, Nate finds he'd give anything to protect Lucy and the children he's grown to love. Even if it means giving up his ranch.

“Blue Moon Promise” is a story of hope, romance, and suspense . . . immersing the reader in a rich historical tale set under Texas stars.

Book Animals Make us HumanAnimals Make Us Human by Temple Grandin is today's Audible deal at $3.95. This is an unabridged nonfiction audiobook of 11+ hours.

The best-selling animal advocate Temple Grandin offers the most exciting exploration of how animals feel since The Hidden Life of Dogs.

In her groundbreaking and best-selling book Animals in Translation, Temple Grandin drew on her own experience with autism as well as her distinguished career as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think, act, and feel. Now she builds on those insights to show us how to give our animals the best and happiest life—on their terms, not ours.

It’s usually easy to pinpoint the cause of physical pain in animals, but to know what is causing them emotional distress is much harder.Drawing on the latest research and her own work,Grandin identifies the core emotional needs of animals. Then she explains how to fulfill them for dogs and cats, horses, farm animals, and zoo animals.Whether it’s how to make the healthiest environment for the dog you must leave alone most of the day, how to keep pigs from being bored, or how to know if the lion pacing in the zoo is miserable or just exercising,Grandin teaches us to challenge our assumptions about animal contentment and honor our bond with our fellow creatures.

Animals Make Us Human is the culmination of almost thirty years of research, experimentation, and experience.

This is essential reading for anyone who’s ever owned, cared for, or simply cared about an animal.

I read the Kitty Norville series up to “Kitty Goes To War” (which, ironically, was published right around the time I was called up to go to Afghanistan). I haven’t read the books in the series since, but I’m thrilled to see the first one on sale. I think my favorite (of the ones I’ve read) was “Kitty’s House of Horrors”. This series is good if you’re burnt out on paranormal romance because of the Anita Blake books, and want your faith in PR restored. 🙂

I can recommend anything Melina Marchetta writes, I’ve been reading her books for 20 years now and I still love her writing. Finnikin of the Rock is her first fantasy novel and I wasn’t sure if I would like it, however I shouldn’t have worried. Like all her books it is about the characters and emotions and very easy to read.

Apparently the Audible deals are on East Coast time, as the sale is no longer available and it’s barely 9:30 p.m. on the West Coast. 🙁 I wanted my mom to buy it, as she’s a horse nut and really admires Temple.
