Books On Sale

Books on Sale: Historicals of Many Flavors (YAY!)

RECOMMENDED: So many spiffy historicals on sale today! Book The Perils of PleasureThe Perils of Pleasure is book one of the Pennyroyal Green series, and is $1.99. It's Colin's story – and you see and hear from or about him throughout most of the series. That's a good thing.

 A rescued rogue…

Scandal has rocked the city of London. Colin Eversea, a handsome, reckless unapologetic rogue is sentenced to hang for murder and, inconveniently for him, the only witness to the crime disappears. Then again, throughout history, the Everseas have always managed to cheat fate in style: Colin is snatched from the gallows by a beautiful, clever mercenary.

A captivating captor…

Cool-headed, daring Madeleine Greenway is immune to Colin's vaunted charm. Her mission is not to rescue Colin but to kidnap him, and to be paid handsomely for it. But when it becomes clear that whoever wants Colin alive wants Madeline dead, the two become uneasy allies in a deadly race for truth. Together, they'll face great danger—and a passion neither can resist.

Book In Bed with the HighlanderRECOMMENDED: In Bed with the Highlander is $1.99. Maya Banks' Scottish historicals are nonstop action, a lot of emotion, and blistering attraction between the hero and heroine. They are also, and I mean this with great affection, the cleanest of all the people in Historical Romance Scotland. Seriously. Bathing happens on the regular – and it's kind of like its own drinking game. This is book 1 of Banks' McCabe trilogy.

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan's clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

The illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband makes her crave his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin's strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.

Book Lyon's Bride and The Scottish Witch by Cathy MaxwellLyon's Bride and The Scottish Witch is a 2-in-1 set from Cathy Maxwell, on sale digitally for $2.99. Yes, there are bonus materials, but I'm not sure if said materials belong to Lyon, his bride, or the Scottish Witch.

Two great full-length novels in The Chattan Curse series together in one set from NY Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell. Includes never before seen “behind the book” info, photos from the author, and a sneak peek to her next series The Brides of Wishmore.

Lyon's Bride

Book All Men are RoguesAll Men are Rogues by Sari Robins is .99c right now. This is a Regency historical with espionage, some suspense, and a puffy white blouse half-down the hero's back on the cover. He'll never manage espionage without his shirt on.

Compelled by her dying father, a spy for His Majesty's service, to complete his last mission, Miss Evelyn Amherst finds herself embroiled in a dangerous world of treachery and betrayal.

When the trail leads her to London, she encounters Lord Justin Barclay, an agent for British Intelligence. He suspects that Eve's father was a Napoleon supporter and that Eve had knowledge of his traitorous actions.

Justin courts Eve, hoping his intimate relationship with her will lead her to reveal the truth. Instead, he finds himself compromising his beliefs as he is drawn under Eve's spell. As the danger escalates, they have to decide not only if they can trust each other with their lives, but with their hearts.

I love Maya Banks’s books and I’m happy to snap one up on sale, but with historicals, I get jostled out of the story so easily. In this case, it’s a mediaeval Scottish girl named a German diminutive nickname (Gretchen). Why? Whyyyy?

Did the Scottish Witch do something to our Hero’s six pack? They look scary.

Alina, I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who gets thrown by poorly-chosen names in historical romances.  (WHHHHHY is there an Englishwoman in a Regency romance called Lauren?  It wasn’t a girl’s name at this point in time!  Augggh, Mary Balogh!)

  4. Lindsay says:

Julie Anne Long is one of my comfort read authors, especially her Pennyroyal Green series. I didn’t read them in order, and Perils of Pleasure was one of my favourites (although there are only one or two I wasn’t 100% thrilled by). Highly recommended, may cause glomming.

The good news is that the Maya Banks sales price is available at ARE, so check your favorite site if it’s not listed for a sales title.

The bad news: if I never picked up another period romance that contained some kind of historical error, I’d never read another period romance. Poorly chosen names are merely the tip of the iceberg. As a former history major, I just roll my eyes, mumble under my breath and keep reading.

There was a book trailer that I believe Tessa Dare did for the Maya Banks Scottish historicals that was hilarious. Watch the trailer, skip the books. Banks writes some good stuff, but these were intensely disappointing. I tend to find Scottish romance irksome, to be fair, and perhaps my hopes were inflated by the lack of historically inaccurate kilts, but I’d still say give it a miss.

I do recommend the Pennyroyal green series.

Book trailer, exactly what I needed tonight, though it was a good thing I was not actively sipping my wine while watching it:
