 Book What Happens in Scotland

What Happens in Scotland is .99c. Elyse reviewed this book and gave it a D because she didn't enjoy the pacing, especially since the hero and heroine spend most of the book not with each other, but retracing their steps to figure out how they ended up married the night before. Other readers enjoyed this book tremendously, particularly Elsie, the prostitute-turned-ladies-maid, and the humorous, light romping tone of the story.

Lady Georgette Thorold has always been wary of marriage, so when she wakes up next to an attractive Scotsman with a wedding ring on her finger, it’s easy to understand why she panics and flees.

Convinced that Georgette is a thief, her may-be husband, James McKenzie, searches for her. As both try to recall what happened that fateful night, they begin to realize that their attraction and desire for each other is undeniable.

But is it enough?

Book In the Land of the Long White CloudIn the Land of the Long White Cloud by Sarah Lark is $3.99. This is a historical romance/historical fiction, originally written in German and translated into English, about two women from England who travel to colonial New Zealand to meet their prospective spouses, one via a mail order advertisement and the other as the settlement to a gambling debt. The reviews of this book are so laudatory, highlighting the friendship between the women and the amazing portrayal of historical New Zealand as a setting for their story.

Helen Davenport, governess for a wealthy London household, longs for a family of her own—but nearing her late twenties, she knows her prospects are dim. Then she spots an advertisement seeking young women to marry New Zealand’s honorable bachelors and begins an affectionate correspondence with a gentleman farmer. When her church offers to pay her travels under an unusual arrangement, she jumps at the opportunity.

Meanwhile, not far away in Wales, beautiful and daring Gwyneira Silkham, daughter of a wealthy sheep breeder, is bored with high society. But when a mysterious New Zealand baron deals her father an unlucky blackjack hand, Gwyn’s hand in marriage is suddenly on the table. Her family is outraged, but Gwyn is thrilled to escape the life laid out for her.

The two women meet on the ship to Christchurch—Helen traveling in steerage, Gwyn first class—and become unlikely friends. When their new husbands turn out to be very different than expected, the women must help one another find the life—and love—they’d hoped for.

Set against the backdrop of colonial nineteenth-century New Zealand, In the Land of the Long White Cloud is a soaring saga of friendship, romance, and unforgettable adventure.

RECOMMENDED: Scandal in Spring is book 4 of Lisa Kleypas' much-loved Wallflower Quartet, a historical romance focused on four friends who are, surprise, wallflowers. With those scandalous words, Daisy Bowman, the sole “Wallflower” yet to be married, seals her fate with the last man she ever expected to tempt her.

And Daisy discovers that the man she has always hated just might turn out to be the man of her dreams.

But right at the moment of sweet surrender, a scandalous secret is uncovered . . . one that could destroy both Matthew and a love more passionate and irresistible than Daisy's wildest fantasies.

Scandal in Spring was DNF for me.  I loved…..really loved the first three and A Wallflower Christmas too, but was very disappointed with Daisy’s story.

How I read this line: Other readers enjoyed this book tremendously, particularly Elsie, the prostitute-turned-ladies-maid … Sorry, juvenile of me, I know.

  5. Dread Pirate Rachel says:

Yesterday was a slow day at work, so I purchased and read What Happens in Scotland (like you do). I didn’t have a problem with the pacing—certainly not enough to give the book a D rating. What did bother me was that the whole book shows how concerned the heroine is about her agency (something that her late husband stripped from her). It is her entire motivation for not wanting another husband. Yet, at a crucial moment, the hero does his level best to deny it to her, reasoning that he “knows best.” That, for me, lowered my opinion of the book. Up to that point, which was near the end, I would have rated it at maybe a B- or a C+, but that scene made me drop my mental grade to a C or a C-.

It was just such an Old Skool sort of trope. I suspect it was a setup for the heroine to display her “feisty” side, but it just enraged me. The sort of behavior that the alleged hero engaged in was the sort of thing that a mustache-twirling, puppy-kicking villain would do. I had a hard time recovering from that, especially since the heroine apologized for what she did afterward. Maybe if the hero had had a good, long grovel session, I would have forgiven him, but as it was, I kind of wanted the heroine to take Elsie and go back to London to be a glamorous, debauched widow.

My God, this must STOP!! I’m on a BUDGET!!

  7. Kim says:

Ohhh I really really liked Scandal in Spring! It Happened One Autumn is my absolute favorite of the Wallflowers books, though. I could read that a dozen times. So sweet and good and funny. The only one that was a DNF for me was The Devil in Winter.

  8. BethSmash says:

I really didn’t like “What Happened in Scotland”.  For more than 1/2 the book he thinks she’s a thief and is incredibly rude to her and no… just no.  Not cool.
