Book The Arrangement - Mary Balogh

The Arrangement by Mary Balogh is $3.99 at Amazon, and this is a reader favorite historical romance. The hero is blinded at 17 in battle. Then he inherits a title he never expected. The heroine is a quiet, shy, and dependent on relatives who are not kind to her. This is some powerful romance, yo. I have no idea if the hero waxes his chest, however, so the cover art may not be entirely accurate.

A mesmerizing story of passionate awakening and redemption, Mary Balogh’s new novel unites a war hero consigned to darkness with a remarkable woman who finds her own salvation by showing him the light of love.

Desperate to escape his mother’s matchmaking, Vincent Hunt, Viscount Darleigh, flees to a remote country village. But even there, another marital trap is sprung. So when Miss Sophia Fry’s intervention on his behalf finds her unceremoniously booted from her guardian’s home, Vincent is compelled to act. He may have been blinded in battle, but he can see a solution to both their problems: marriage.

At first, quiet, unassuming Sophia rejects Vincent’s proposal. But when such a gloriously handsome man persuades her that he needs a wife of his own choosing as much as she needs protection from destitution, she agrees. Her alternative is too dreadful to contemplate. But how can an all-consuming fire burn from such a cold arrangement? As friendship and camaraderie lead to sweet seduction and erotic pleasure, dare they believe a bargain born of desperation might lead them both to a love destined to be?

 Book Always - Jude Deveraux

Always by Jude Deveraux is $1.99 right now. This is a Deveraux-paranormal, with time travel and suspense elements all mixed together. This was not my favorite Deveraux, but when I was reading everything she wrote in an epic glom, I had to read this. Just skip the epilogue. Pretend it's not there.

Darci has never given up searching for her kidnapped husband, Adam Montgomery. But her quest has taken her deeper into the world of psychic phenomena than she ever dreamed — or dared to go. When the FBI enlists her help in locating the missing father of undercover agent Jack Rose, Darci signs on for the covert operation, not knowing that her attraction to handsome, sexy Jack is about to lead her into deadly territory — and into an era long past.

For Jack has a protector, a mysterious nineteenth-century lady who pulls them into a time and place where Darci is stripped of her abilities. Can she find the key that links to the modern-day crimes she's set out to solve?

And will a showdown with a wicked force from the past hold her hostage…for all eternity?

Re: Always. Too late. I read the epilogue.  WTF!  It’s enough to put you off epilogues forever.

    Loved, loved, loved The Arrangement!

  3. LML says:

Why do you suppose publishers offer the second in a series on sale instead of the first?  At the moment, link to Amazon shows $4.55, grumblegrumble.

The Balogh is the second in her new “Survivors” series. I bought it, then, because I am the way I am, I had to buy and read the first one (The Proposal) first.

Perhaps that’s the answer to your question, LML. It’s all my fault, cos I let them sucker me in!

I am already off epilogues forever.

My Fair Concubine is good. The best thing about it is probably the unusual setting. And the setting is seriously great, so that’s not faint praise. Otherwise it’s standard, but the good kind of standard. The hero is pretty much a tool, but believably so. More sympathetic than Henry Higgins, at least. The make-over aspect is not very satisfactory, it’s more of a you-were-perfect-all-along, but that certainly has its own appeal.
