Books on Sale: Austen Nonfiction, Historical Romance, and a Heyer Mystery

Book Jane Austen Guide to Good MannersRECOMMENDED: Yesterday, Carrie S reviewed Jane Austen's Guide to Good Mannersgiving it a B:

In this case, I think it's not very helpful to say the book is “good” or “not good”.  It makes more sense to list who would like it, because it's obviously going to have a strong but limited appeal.

This is a great book for:

– Hardcore Jane Austen fans who like the codes and rules of the world and want a deeper understanding of what's happening with the characters.
– Writers of Regency fiction….
– Some Regency romance fans….

Carrie's review stated that the paper version is exquisitely produced, but if you're curious, the digital version is on sale at Amazon for $2.99 right now.

Jane Austen's Guide to Good Manners is a light-hearted, insightful handbook written as if intended for her original Regency Era readers, and illustrated throughout with beautiful watercolors. When Anna, Jane Austen's young niece, sent her a novel for “literary comment,” Jane loved everything about it, except its utter disregard for the manners of the day. The resulting and tender correspondence between the two serves as the foundation for this instructional book.

Etiquette and social behavior of the early 1800s come to life in lovely chapters teaching one on how to pay and return formal “calls,” how to properly refuse a proposal of marriage, who should lead off the dancing at a country-house ball, and what to wear for a morning walk. Jane Austen used these daily customs and niceties to brilliantly illuminate the cloistered world of high society women in her timeless novels. Now with this delightful handbook of correct social behavior, readers will learn just why Mrs. Bennet of Pride and Prejudice couldn't call alone on her new, rich, bachelor neighbor and had to force the reluctant Mr. Bennet to do so…even as he uttered “Tis an etiquette I despise.”

An indispensable gift for any Austen fan, this beautiful book will prove irresistible to anyone wishing to go back in time to the atmosphere of their favorite Austen novels.

 Book They Found Him Dead

They Found Him Dead by Georgette Heyer is a mystery, and it's $1.99 today at Amazon and BN. It should be matched at other retailers – I hope, anyway. This is book 3 in her Inspectors Hannasyde and Hemingway series, and is a murder mystery set in England in the 1930s.

It is the morning after wealthy Silas Kane's sixtieth birthday party – a celebration that brings to light a number of familial controversies. When Kane is found dead at the foot of a cliff, the assumption is that he simply lost his way in the fog and fell by accident.

But the subsequent death of his nephew and heir and threats on the life of the third Kane, the newest heir, raises obvious suspicion, and the redoubtable investigative skills of Superintendent Hannasyde prove critical once again.

Book Wicked Nights with a Proper Lady

Wicked Nights With a Proper Lady is $2.99 digitally. This is a historical romance is the first in the Dangerous Rogues series. The plot centers around two people who had an affair years prior, but were prevented from marrying. Some readers loved the reunited lovers trope, while others found it hard to accept the hero for not marrying the heroine in the first place. Have you read this book? What did you think?

Book Lord Gray's ListA few months ago, this book was on sale at BN only, and now it's on sale for $1.99 at Amazon only. The slightly off-center positioning of Big Ben and the bridge are still VERY, VERY disappointing to me.

From duchesses to chamber maids, everybody's reading it. Each Tuesday, The London List appears, filled with gossip and scandal, offering job postings and matches for the lovelorn–and most enticing of all, telling the tales and selling the wares a more modest publication wouldn't touch. . .

The creation of Evangeline Ramsey, The London List saved her and her ailing father from destitution. But the paper has given Evie more than financial relief. As its publisher, she lives as a man, dressed in masculine garb, free to pursue and report whatever she likes–especially the latest disgraces besmirching Lord Benton Gray. It's only fair that she hang his dirty laundry, given that it was his youthful ardor that put her off marriage for good. . .

Lord Gray–Ben–isn't about to stand by while all of London laughs at his peccadilloes week after week. But once he discovers that the publisher is none other than pretty Evie Ramsey with her curls lopped short, his worries turn to desires–and not a one of them fit to print. . .

SO sad the Jane Austen isn’t on sale here in Australia. 🙁

  2. Meredith says:

I really enjoyed Lord Grey’s List. It’s a fun book with an awesome heroine. I’m also glad I read it in digital so I didn’t have to see that darn cover! >_<

  3. kkw says:

I like Heyer’s romances better than her mysteries, but the mysteries are still delightful. And I wouldn’t have called this a series – recurring characters, yes, but the stories aren’t really interconnected, or sequentially dependent, or even much about the detectives. I wouldn’t worry about reading them in order, and I rarely feel that way.

I suspect her works are edging into public domain territory. There’s a lot of reprints and sales all the sudden, after years of them being impossible to find.

  4. Joanna says:

The Georgette Heyer books, both romances and mysteries, are being republished by Sourcebooks, they have redone the covers and are one of the few publishers who really seems to “get” the ebook and take advantage of it.  Everything I’ve read from them has been well formatted and error free which makes me love their ebooks!  And they are smart enough to have frequent sales on their books (not just the Heyers).

  5. Kelly S. says:

Oh, I’m with you on the cover of Lord Gray’s List!  Especially since his name, Benton, and he goes by Ben.  Move “Big Ben” over a little… It would be snort worthy with a bag full of snickers (laughing not candy or maybe both).
