Young Adult Romance

Book The Farm - Emily McKay

The Farm by Emily McKay

Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible. Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world.

But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race…

  1. 1
    Harper Gray says:

I will recommend Time’s Echo  (nominee in Strong Romantic Elements) to anyone who will listen! ;P

A Rogue By Any Other Name looks interesting, though, and I’ve become increasingly intrigued by The Haunting of Maddy Clare, so I think those two will go in my TBR pile.

  2. 2
    Holly says:

“A Rogue by Any Other Name” was a great book!! Really happy for Sarah.

  3. 3
    Mary Anne says:

For me, the icing on the cake in A Rogue by Any Other Name was Michael’s letter to Sixpence, it made me cry when I read it! This was the first book of Sarah’s that I read but I became a huge fan and that book became a favourite after that.

  4. 4
    Jess B says:

Seduced by a Pirate is the only one I had read so I’m really excited by some new additions to by TBR pile. I’m especially excited about the Sarah Morgan and Sarah MacLean books.

I’ve only recently gotten into Sarah Morgan but I love her ability to take the typical Harlequin tropes and turn them on their ears.

  5. 5
    Liviania says:

Liked the Sarah MacLean and happy to see it win; enjoyed the Kresley Cole although it definitely isn’t the strongest in the series.

The Farm is one I’ve liked less and less since I’ve read it.  The way the autistic character is treated as totally incompetent despite generally being better about noticing danger than her sister was annoying.  And it’s romance certainly had nothing on some of the other YA books nominated.

  6. 6
    HJ says:

I’m disappointed that Ruthie Knox didn’t win.  She’s one of my favourite discoveries this year.

  7. 7
    Emily A. says:

Didn’t read the Eloisa James, but I am happy for her since I read a lot of her stuff.

I agree with above poster The Farm really wasn’t a romance. You can read my review.
I guess this category of Young Adult need development with only four nominees.
