Books on Sale: Grafton Mysteries and Nora Roberts Contemporaries - Plus Recommended Travel Tools

I have some discounted ebooks to tell you about – plus some handy tools I like to use when I travel that you might find helpful as well! This is sort of a two-in-one post – books for the travel and gadgets for when you arrive!

Let's start with the books:

Book The ReefThe Reef by Nora Roberts is $2.99 at Amazon right now. This is one of Roberts' single title romantic suspense novels (I.e. it's not part of a series), and it's set in the world of underwater treasure hunting and scuba diving.

Marine archeologist Tate Beaumont has a passion for treasure-hunting. Over the years, she and her father have uncovered many fabulous riches, but one treasure has always eluded them: Angelique’s Curse—a jeweled amulet heavy with history, dark with legend, and tainted with blood. In order to find this precious artifact, the Beaumonts reluctantly form a partnership with salvagers Buck and Matthew Lassiter. Having to share this dream is more than Tate can bear, but she has little choice.

As the Beaumonts and Lassiters pool their resources to locate Angelique’s Curse, the Caribbean waters darken with shadowy deceptions and hidden threats. Their partnership is placed in jeopardy when Matthew refuses to share information—including the truth behind his father’s mysterious death several years earlier. For now, Tate and Matthew continue their uneasy alliance—until danger and desire begin to rise to the surface…

Book Rising TidesRECOMMENDED: This is one of my favorites of Roberts' trilogies. Rising Tides is book 2 in the Chesapeake Bay trilogy (later a quartet) and is the story of Ethan,  who is quiet and dedicated to his family, and carries a wealth of hidden emotional baggage. There is a larger mystery that plays out across the three books of the original trilogy, so if you haven't read it, you should probably start with book 1, Sea Swept, which, alas, is not on sale.

Of the three brothers, it was Ethan who shared his father's passion for the Maryland shore. And now with his father gone, Ethan is determined to make the family boatbuilding business a success. But amidst his achievements lie the most important challenges of his life… There is young Seth, who needs him more than ever.

And there is a woman he has always loved but never believed he could have. But beneath Ethan's seemingly still waters is a dark and painful past. He must learn to see around the shadows to accept who he is.

Because through Ethan's past lies the future–and his one chance at happiness…

Book A is for Alibi If you like the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton, the series up to, I believe, the letter O is on sale for $3.99 each. A is for Alibi is the first one (obviously).

 A IS FOR AVENGER
A tough-talking former cop, private investigator Kinsey Millhone has set up a modest detective agency in a quiet corner of Santa Teresa, California. A twice-divorced loner with few personal possessions and fewer personal attachments, she's got a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes.

A IS FOR ACCUSED
That's why she draws desperate clients like Nikki Fife. Eight years ago, she was convicted of killing her philandering husband. Now she's out on parole and needs Kinsey's help to find the real killer. But after all this time, clearing Nikki's bad name won't be easy.

A IS FOR ALIBI
If there's one thing that makes Kinsey Millhone feel alive, it's playing on the edge. When her investigation turns up a second corpse, more suspects, and a new reason to kill, Kinsey discovers that the edge is closer–and sharper–than she imagined.

Book The Boxcar Children - Surprise IslandSurprise Island, book #2 in the Boxcar Children series, is a Kindle Daily Deal today and is $1.99. Book 1, “The Boxcar Children,” is available digitally as well at $4.49 (if you have any young readers at your house who MUST read a series in order, like I do!). The Boxcar Children series was originally published in 1924 and reissued in 1942. They're aimed at young readers in grades 2-6. Did you read any of the Boxcar Children series, or know any young people who love these books?

Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny used to live alone in a boxcar. Now they have a home with their grandfather and are spending the summer on their own private island.

There is a mysterious stranger on the island with a secret–but that's not the only surprise in store for the Boxcar Children.

Book Fold up USB charger mini and micro USB

And now, let's talk travel gadgets!

This is a fold up charger for a micro USB and a mini USB device which can plug into the USB port on your laptop. Instead of bringing a bunch of cords with me, I use this, since I don't usually need all that cord length when I'm using my computer to charge things.

The unit folds into itself and is very tiny – keychain size, really. I usually put it in a zip-top pouch or a small carabiner keychain with any other micro-sized chargers I need, and try to keep it with all the other tiny electrical things so I don't lose them.

Book iGo fold up charger for ipod and iPad

There is also a fold-up iGo charger for iPods and iPads with the 30-pin connector.

I haven't seen one that incorporates all three – that would be seriously excellent.

Book Three micro cables for iPod mini USB and micro USB

If the fold-up ones were not your thing, or you don't want to carry two little fold up items, you could also try these three miniature cables for micro USB, mini USB, and iPod or iPad charging. Like I said, I bring cables and never unfold them, so I don't need all that length.

Book Rotating Power Strip of three plubs and two USB portsWhen I'm traveling somewhere and will be sharing a room (and therefore the electrical outlets), I throw a power strip or Squid in my bag. It's neighborly!

But I'm trying to travel very light this month and next, so this is a much better option for me. This power strip rotates so you can avoid covering the other plug to use it, and it comes with two USB ports, too.

Reviews indicate that using all five at once doesn't promote much in the way of rapid charging, but this is much smaller and lighter weight than my Squid!

  1. Joanna says:

I know there are lots of Nora lovers here so anybody read The Reef?  Since it’s a stand-alone thought it might be worth a try

  2. SB Sarah says:

I am trying to remember if I read it! I *think* I did, because I read a LOT of them, but I didn’t read it more than once so I don’t remember it clearly. I’m sorry.

  3. Joanna says:

No worries.  if you can’t remember it probably means it wasn’t great but wasn’t terrible either!

  4. Rachel says:

I have not read The Reef, but I did read the Chesapeake Bay series and they were AWESOME.  Loved them. Of course, Roberts is one of my favorite cotton candy writers, so I imagine it wouldn’t be a waste.

  5. Kelly S says:

I thought Grafton was at least up to ‘S’. Turn out that “W is for Wasted” comes out Sept 2013.  She much further than either of us thought!

  6. Shout out for the Boxcar Children! My daughter LOVES them. Our library has a gazillion of the reissued paperbacks and she’s devoured them all (there are well over 100, so I’m thinking there was/is a ghostwriter). My girl likes to go old-skool with her reading—Bobbsey Twins, Trixie Belden, etc.

  7. Andrea says:

    @Joanna
I read The Reef a couple of years ago, and I think I liked it but it wasn’t one of my favorite Nora books.  The impression it left on me was that the angst between the hero and heroine over the Misunderstanding between them was well done because I did feel their pain and frustration.

    @Charlotte Russell
I love Trixie Belden!  I still scour used book stores for copies whenever I can.
