Books on Sale: Steampunk, Paranormal, Fantasy, and a Nonfiction Book About Raising Boys

Book Heart of IronHeart of Iron by Bec McMaster is the Kindle Daily Deal today at Amazon. It's $1.99. This is book #2 in the London Steampunk series and has some stellar reviews behind it. Book 1 is Kiss of Steel – which was on sale recently. (You might have purchased it, in which case, excellent opportunity to grab book 2.)

In Victorian London, if you’re not a blue blood of the Echelon then you’re nothing at all. The Great Houses rule the city with an iron fist, imposing their strict ‘blood taxes’ on the nation, and the Queen is merely a puppet on a string…

Lena Todd makes the perfect spy. Nobody suspects the flirtatious debutante could be a sympathizer for the humanist movement haunting London’s vicious blue blood elite. Not even the ruthless Will Carver, the one man she can’t twist around her little finger, and the one man whose kiss she can’t forget…

Stricken with the loupe and considered little more than a slave-without-a-collar to the blue bloods, Will wants nothing to do with the Echelon or the dangerous beauty who drives him to the very edge of control. But when he finds a coded letter on Lena—a code that matches one he saw on a fire-bombing suspect—he realizes she’s in trouble.

To protect her, he must seduce the truth from her. With the humanists looking to start a war with the Echelon, Lena and Will must race against time—and an automaton army—to stop the humanist plot before it’s too late. But as they fight to save a city on the brink of revolution, the greatest danger might just be to their hearts…

 Book Firebrand Box Set

The Firebrand Box Set by Elisabeth Naughton is $.99c for three novels. This is erotic paranormal romance.

Bound to Seduction – Book One

Careful what you wish for…

Sentenced as a pleasure slave, Djinn Prince Tariq of the Marid tribe has no choice but to travel into the human realm and corrupt souls by granting wishes to the women who possess the Firebrand opal, a gemstone of magical power. When Mira Dawson summons him and requests he teach her how to pleasure others instead of ordering him to pleasure her though, duty and fantasy soon become a temptation even Tariq can’t deny. The only question left is…will the pleasure be worth the price? Because as Tariq has learned the hard way, nothing…not even fantasies…are free.

Slave to Passion – Book Two

Kill them all…

Enslaved by his enemies and forced to fight in the pits of Jahannam for their depraved entertainment, Nasir, the once-proud Marid warrior and heir to the djinn throne, has become a killer. One celebrated and feared all at the same time. Even he doesn’t remember who he used to be, nor does he care anymore, until hope enters his cell in the form of an alluring woman full of secrets and mystery who may just be the key to his salvation.

Possessed by Desire – Book Three

Even desire comes at a price…

Imprisonment has taught Ashur, the youngest djinn prince, one thing: life as a pleasure slave has its rewards…if you play by the rules. For a shot at revenge against the brothers who abandoned him, Ashur is willing to serve his master, even if it means using passion to corrupt the souls she needs to fuel her immortality. His first assignment, however, turns out to be more than just a woman in need of a little pleasure. Claire is an angel, and angels have the ability to steal djinn powers. No matter how much Ashur wants to see his brothers suffer, there’s no way he’s tangling with a celestial being. Unless, of course, she tangles with him first…

 Book Graveminder

Woman looking over her shoulder holding a lantern. She looks about 16. Yet this is an adult novel.Graveminder is $1.99. This is a gothic fantasy with a bit of romance about spiritual/paranormal mortuary professionals who make sure the dead stay buried. It's creepy. Creeeeeepy.  It also has a ton of different covers, including one that looks like YA even though this is an adult novel (right).

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the tender attention her grandmother, Maylene, bestowed upon the dead of Claysville. While growing up, Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual at every funeral: three sips from a small silver flask followed by the words, “Sleep well, and stay where I put you.”

Now Maylene is gone and Bek must return to the hometown—and the man—she abandoned a decade ago, only to discover that Maylene's death was not natural . . . and there was good reason for her odd traditions. In Claysville, the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected—and beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D. From this dark place the deceased will return if their graves are not properly minded.

And only the Graveminder, a Barrow woman, and the current Undertaker, Byron, can set things to right once the dead begin to walk.

 Book Swagger

Swagger is a nonfiction book about the cultural influences faced by boys growing up today. Generally speaking, my rule for parenting books is that there's usually 2 perfect pieces of advice within them that fit me, but given that I have two dudes, I'm curious about this book, alalarmist subtitle aside.

We medicate, discipline, suspend and expel our boys from school at quadruple the rate of girls. We let double the number of boys drop out of high school than girls, and of those boys who do graduate, they are far more likely than their sisters to be illiterate, to fail to go to college, or to drop out of college if they do go. SWAGGER is a wakeup call for parents about the real world our boys inhabit right now, but it offers solutions as well.

From how to teach your boy humility (the swagger anti-venom), to “making your home a reading mecca,” creating an expectation of college graduation, and how to teach your boy to be critical of the media onslaught in his life, this book is also packed with research-proven, parent-tested, teacher-approved practical solutions, delivered in the author’s trademark no-nonsense, often humorous, take-charge voice.

Ever have one of those months where you don’t really want to read anything because you’ve reread your favorites too recently? And you’re pretending to save money?

    That trend just broke…

Thanks! (At least it was 6 books for five dollars)

Also-if anyone has only a nook, all of the deals appear to be ongoing at Barnes and Noble as well.

Also-call me cynical, but if boys aren’t going to college as often, does that mean that the men of our country have statistically less debt? As someone who graduated with a degree that essentially does nothing, I’m actually jealous of a few of the friends I have that didn’t go to college-they’re the ones that (at 30) have homes, have paid off their vehicles, and can afford to go on vacation periodically. I understand that certainly isn’t the case for all people who didn’t go to college, but as a country, we tend to gloss over the fact that it is possible to be successful and happy without a degree.

  2. Dread Pirate Rachel says:

I’m curious about Graveminder. I want to know if the romance in it makes the creepiness worthwhile, because my tolerance for horror is awfully low unless there’s either a) outstanding humor (à la Zombieland or Shaun of the Dead), or b) a great romantic payoff. None of this “happy for now” bullshit.

Note: “H/h saved the world but lost the love of his/her life” is acceptable. Really, Buffy should have just ended with Season 5; it was kind of perfect. Not that I’m bitter about what they did to Spike in seasons 6 & 7, or anything.

  3. Carrie G says:

Unfortunately, the Bec McMaster’s book doesn’t seem to be on sale any more, plus your link leads to Kiss of Steel, not Heart of Iron. 🙂

  4. Sarah Hipple says:

    ANOTHER SALE:

Tessa Dare’s books on Kindle seem to be extraordinarily cheap right now. I don’t know why. I happened across A Week To Be Wicked on the Smart Bitches podcast interview with Nalini Singh, checked it out on Amazon, and it’s only $0.89.

    Craziness!

It looks like quite a few other books by Tessa Dare are discounted now too. I think I might need to pick them up if I like A Week to Be Wicked as much as I think I will.
