This week's Friday Video is a Brazilian commercial for shampoo – Dove shampoo for men. Sally sent this to me, and I'm so grateful because I bark-laughed so hard I accidentally summed both dogs and a cat.

OK, this is really interesting.
The first link I had (which was removed, darn it) did not have the part where the dude went running for the non-girly shampoo so his hair would stop doing all the flying shampoo things. It ended with him getting on the elevator – and was less sexist as a result.
This one is longer, and has him running for his life to get Man Shampoo so his hair will stop Flying Around like Girl Hair in a Shampoo Commercial.
HUH.

This is AMAAAAAAZING. I do so hope that whomever came up with this concept won some sort of award. It is brilliant.
I have to disagree that this version is sexist, I don’t think that his having the ‘girl shampoo hair’ is sexist at all. Mainly because no one has hair like those shampoo girls anyway. I mean, no one walks around behind me with a slo-mo camera and a giant fan. At least this Dove commercial is acknowledging how absolutely crazypants women’s shampoo commercials are.
I do think it’s sexist, though, because it indicates that things that are marked as feminine—long, shiny hair, namely—are Icky and Gross and Not For Men, No Sir.
This kind of sexism is more insidious and gross because it doesn’t even question the status quo because it assumes we’ve internalized it.
I snorted milk through my nose and integrated the goldfish by mistake.
I’m on the “this is sexist” side. Not that it didn’t make me laugh. It totally did, but in a “Oh, culture. *shakes head in a despairing yet affectionate way* Whatever will we do with you?” What am I, fresh out of rage? I think maybe I’ve used it all up on the rape-athon that’s been going on in the news whenever I look lately.
