Books on Sale: Milan’s Brothers Sinister, a Hist-Para-TimeTravel set in the 20s, and YA Shakespeare

Book The Duchess War - Courtney Milan

The Duchess War, the first book in Courtney Milan's Brothers Sinister series, is the Kindle Daily Deal and is priced at $1.99. Carrie S reviewed this novel and gave it an A+. The prequel novella, The Governess Affair (SB grade: B+), is free, and A Kiss for Midwinter, the novella that comes after The Duchess War is $.99c right now.

Miss Minerva Lane is a quiet, bespectacled wallflower, and she wants to keep it that way. After all, the last time she was the center of attention, it ended badly–so badly that she changed her name to escape her scandalous past. Wallflowers may not be the prettiest of blooms, but at least they don't get trampled.

So when a handsome duke comes to town, the last thing she wants is his attention. But that is precisely what she gets. Because Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont, is not fooled. When Minnie figures out what he's up to, he realizes there is more to her than her spectacles and her quiet ways. And he's determined to lay her every secret bare before she can discover his. But this time, one shy miss may prove to be more than his match…

The Duchess War is the first full-length book (97,000 words) in the Brothers Sinister series. It is preceded by The Governess Affair, a prequel novella, and followed by A Kiss for Midwinter. Each book stands alone, but those who prefer to read in order might want to read that book first.

Book The Governess Affair - Prequel to The Duchess War

The Governess Affair is the prequel novella to The Duchess War. It's free just about everywhere right now. I read this novella and enjoyed it tremendously (Grade: B+).

She will not give up.

Three months ago, governess Serena Barton was let go from her position. Unable to find new work, she's demanding compensation from the man who got her sacked: a petty, selfish, swinish duke. But it's not the duke she fears. It's his merciless man of business–the man known as the Wolf of Clermont. The formidable former pugilist has a black reputation for handling all the duke's dirty business, and when the duke turns her case over to him, she doesn't stand a chance. But she can't stop trying–not with her entire future at stake.

He cannot give in.

Hugo Marshall is a man of ruthless ambition–a characteristic that has served him well, elevating the coal miner's son to the right hand man of a duke. When his employer orders him to get rid of the pestering governess by fair means or foul, it's just another day at the office. Unfortunately, fair means don't work on Serena, and as he comes to know her, he discovers that he can't bear to use foul ones. But everything he has worked for depends upon seeing her gone. He'll have to choose between the life that he needs, and the woman he is coming to love…

The Governess Affair is a prequel novella (about 33,000 words) to the Brothers Sinister series. It is followed by The Duchess War, which is now available.

Book A Kiss for Midwinter

A Kiss for Midwinter is $.99c, but it usually is that price. If you'd like to get all the books published so far in the Sinister series, you can buy the two novellas and the novel for around $3.00 total. Carrie S reviewed this novella and gave it an A-.

Miss Lydia Charingford is always cheerful, and never more so than at Christmas time. But no matter how hard she smiles, she can't forget the youthful mistake that could have ruined her reputation. Even though the worst of her indiscretion was kept secret, one other person knows the truth of those dark days: the sarcastic Doctor Jonas Grantham.

She wants nothing to do with him…or the butterflies that take flight in her stomach every time he looks her way.

Jonas Grantham has a secret, too: He's been in love with Lydia for more than a year. This winter, he's determined to conquer her dislike and win her for his own. It all starts with a wager and a kiss…

A Kiss for Midwinter is a novella (38,000 words) in the Brothers Sinister series. It follows The Duchess War. Each book stands on its own, but those who prefer to read in order might want to read that book first.

Book Midnight in Your Arms

Midnight In Your Arms is an historical/paranormal/time travel/gothic set in the 20s (and also the Victorian era). Got all that? Sounds really neat, doesn't it? It's on sale for .99c, or $1.99 (varies per vendor).

For fans of Downton Abbey and readers of Jude Deveraux and Teresa Medeiros comes a brand-new tale of a love that dares to defy time itself . . .

When psychic Laura Dearborn inherits Stonecross Hall in 1926, she has no idea she's inheriting a love story too—one that she's lived again and again. But as Alaric Storm III, the handsome owner of the mansion from sixty years earlier, starts to haunt her waking dreams, Laura discovers her heart's true home has always been within Stonecross's walls.

Tormented by memories of war, Alaric Storm III is used to spirits—just not ones from the future. Set on fire by Laura's ghostly affections, Alaric is forced to choose: follow his heart and grasp Laura's hand through time, or surrender to the call of duty and live without love.

As All Hallows' Eve draws near, Alaric and Laura must find a way to hold on to each other forever—or risk repeating their tragic romance until the end of time.

Book Tempestuous

This novel and the following are both Kindle deals – darn it – but they both sounded so neat, I wanted to pass along the news. They are both YA Shakespeare retellings. Tempestuous is on sale for $1.99.

After a mistake with big financial consequences topples her throne, former “it girl” Miranda Prospero is bitter: she finds herself stranded in a crazed new world, holding court among geeks and misfits at a mall Hot Dog Kabob stand. Then, she gets her chance for revenge.

When the storm of the decade snows in the mall workers and last-minute shopaholics for a long winter's night, Miranda sets out to get back at the catty clique who was behind her exile. But there's a complication. She somehow gets handcuffed to sullen loner Caleb.

With him (literally) bound to her side, Miranda learns more in one night about her own heart, and human nature, than she ever did as prep royalty.

With this twisted take on Shakespeare's The Tempest, authors Kim Askew and Amy Helmes prove again that, from Juliet's grief to Cordelia's rage, no one knew about teen angst better than the Bard. His wisdom holds up nearly half a millennium later.

Book Exposure

Exposure is also a Kindle daily deal at $1.99. It's a retelling of Macbeth, set in a YA universe.

Double, double, toil, and trouble! The quest for high-school royalty can turn deadly when teen ambition outstrips reason.

Skye Kingston is a shy shutterbug who prefers observing life from behind her camera lens. She doesn't know she's stunning, and comes off the sidelines only when she's forced to by the terrifying events of one treacherous school year in Alaska.

A boy named Duncan is dead, and his death may or may not be an accident. Skye's three new best friends are eerily able to foretell the future, and cheerleader Beth might be more than a social climber–she quite probably is a sociopath. Then there's Skye's growing attraction to the school hottie, Craig, The Boy Who Would Be Prom King.

But their time is crossed by fate. There's already been one death, and who can say if it's only the first? As Skye falls for Craig, she also slowly realizes that he is caught in the crosshairs of a deadly plot. Can she save Craig and herself from a murderous fate?

Exposure is not only a modern take on the classic Macbeth, it's proof that nothing has changed since Shakespeare riffed on the subject nearly half a millennium ago: the quest for power can lead to bloodstained hands.
