Book Caught in Amber

Cathy Pegau's books are on sale for $1.99 right now. Caught in Amber is a science fiction novel set in the future, and Carrie S reviewed, giving it a B:

Even though the story doesn't shy away from its tougher issues, it stays entertaining and enjoyable, not too bogged down in angst. The various schemes are exciting and suspenseful. The main characters are funny and engaging. I really rooted for Sasha and Nathan, and I appreciated the fact that their attraction to each other wasn't too overplayed.

Recently out of rehab, Sasha James is determined to keep her head down, complete her parole and never touch amber again. The chip in her neck controls her cravings for the highly addictive drug, but also tracks her every move. Not that she goes anywhere other than work and the halfway house she calls home—a far cry from her luxurious former life as lover of the mining colony's top drug dealer, Guy Christiansen.

Agent Nathan Sterling has no desire to see Sasha fall back into amber, but his sister has become Guy's latest conquest and the unexpectedly attractive Sasha is the key to getting her back. So in exchange for an introduction, he offers Sasha the one thing she can't refuse—her freedom. From the chip, her parole and even the planet if she wants. Though he would be sorry to see her go…

Torn between her growing attraction to Nathan, fear of Guy and the allure of amber, Sasha accepts. But who will save her if Guy refuses to let her go a second time?

Book Rulebreaker

Rulebreaker is $1.99. This is also a science fiction novel with espionage that is lighter on the romance but high, according to reviewers, in chemistry. (Also, I have very lustful thoughts about that heroine's hair.)

Liv Braxton's Felon Rule #1: Don't get emotionally involved.

Smash-and-grab thieving doesn't lend itself to getting chummy with the victims, and Liv hasn't met anyone on the mining colony of Nevarro worth knowing, anyway. So it's easy to follow her Rules. Until her ex, Tonio, shows up with an invitation to join him on the job of a lifetime.

Until Zia Talbot, the woman she's supposed to deceive, turns Liv's expectations upside down in a way no woman ever has. Until corporate secrets turn deadly. But to make things work with Zia, Liv has to do more than break her Rules, and the stakes are higher than just a broken heart . . .

Deep Deception is a f/f science fiction novel to be published 27 May 2013. It's on pre-order sale for $1.99.

Colonial Mining Authority agent Natalia Hallowell doesn't always play by the rules, but she wouldn't compromise a case either. Put on administrative leave under a cloud of accusation, with no support from her boss, Natalia seeks a little anonymous companionship at her favorite bar.

But she's surprised when the woman who catches her fancy starts buying her drinks.

Desperate, Genevieve “Gennie” Caine has no choice but to seduce, drug and tie Natalia to the bed to get her attention. With the Reyes Corporation after something she has, Gennie needs Natalia to open an investigation and distract them long enough for her to get off Nevarro.

Natalia doesn't trust Gennie—despite the growing attraction between them—but the corporation's suspiciously high profits and abnormal business dealings convince her that they must be hiding something. She has no idea just how deep the deceptions run…

Book Potent Pleasures

Potent Pleasures by Eloisa James is on sale digitally for .99c. If you're a James fan looking to round out your collection, that's a great price. Reviews on Goodreads are mixed. Some love this book, and some found the hero seriously unlikeable.

Nothing is more seductive than temptation. Reckless desire sends Charlotte Daicheston into the garden with a dashing masked stranger. He's powerful, unforgettable, a devastatingly handsome footman who lures her–not against her will–into a grand indiscretion at a masquerade ball. Then he vanishes.

Several years later, after Charlotte has made her dazzling debut in London society, they meet again. But the rogue is no footman. He's rich, titled, and he doesn't remember Charlotte. Worse, he's the subject of some scandalous gossip: rumor has it, the earl's virility is in question.

Charlotte, who knows all too intimately the power of his passion, is stunned by the gossip that has set society ablaze. At last, there can be a storybook ending…unless, of course, Charlotte's one mad indiscretion had not been with him at all….

  1. Why did someone photoshop Piper Perabo onto the Deep Deception cover?!

  2. Tam says:

You know, I had such mixed feelings when I read ‘Potent Pleasures’, years ago: I liked the heroine, I liked her mother, I liked her best friend, I liked the hero’s brother.  But I did indeed feel that the hero was a complete dick, largely because the plot involves one of my least-ever favourite cliches: the one where the hero discovers that the heroine is SHOCK HORRO not a virgin on the wedding night and is utterly repelled even though it was really HIM who accidentally deflowered her anonymously years ago.  And then eventually all is solved when he discovers that lo, it was him who took her precious flower after all.  Gack.

I think it shows that it was one of James’ early efforts.  Her heroes have been a lot more liberal-minded in all the later romances I’ve read.

  3. cleo says:

@Tam – I *knew* I read this one and didn’t like it, but couldn’t remember why.  Thanks for reminding me – it was the asshole hero.  She wrote two other books in the Pleasure series – I think I read all 3 of them, and I didn’t like them at all.  Her more recent books are much, much better, imo.

  4. Kelly S. says:

Potent Pleasures was a DNF for me, possibly my first.  The asshat “hero” only figured out that he was the one who took her virginity, the reason he leaves her and puts her through so much, was in the fucking epilogue when she takes pains to reconstruct their first time together.  Asshat.
