Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Dragon Eggs!

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

Jessica has a HaBO request, and it involves dragons. And necklaces!

OK. I am trying to find this book that I remember very specific details about things that really don't impact the plot. As you do.

I know this is a historical “paranormal” romance. I want to say it was around the regency period in England but I'm not entirely sure. All I remember is that the hero gives the heroine a pet dragon egg that she stays up for days waiting for it to hatch in the fireplace (as you do) and that it comes out white like an opal.

This pet dragon then stays wrapped around the heroine's neck like a fancy warm necklace and I think saves her from some baddies who were after her (because why not, let's just throw some suspense in with the dragons and the magic).

This book is bugging me know and every time I try and Google it I get medieval romances with some dragon warrior. I'm hoping you might remember this book.

Do you remember that scene, or the book? And is it me or does the dragon curling around her neck and protecting her seem adorably endearing?

  1. Neither are what you’re looking for, but The Circle Opens series by Tamora Pierce has a glass dragon that twines its tail around the main character’s neck like a necklace and sprays glass pellets/needles at people it doesn’t like. The Jaxom/Ruth books of Anne McCaffrey’s Pern series feature an opal white dragon. This sounds like fun, though.

I’ve read this ,but I can’t remember when or the title and author.  I can’t seem to seperate it from Seraphina by Rachel Hartman or Deborah Harkness’ Shadow of Night.  I’m pretty sure it’s a YA novel.  Sorry.

  3. Emily E says:

I’ve read this.  But it wasn’t recently enough for me to grab the title.  Now you have that dragon circling my brain like a song you can’t stop.  Two names float to the top of my brain, Sandra Schwab and Kathryne Kennedy.

  4. Rebecca says:

I read this! Last September! Which means, according to my Kindle account, that the book is almost certainly a Kathryne Kennedy and is most likely Lord of Illusion? If anyone can confirm, that would be awesome, because I’d like to read it again.

  5. Sarah O says:

I feel like this is from one of Mercedes Lackey’s Elemental Masters series, or at least a book similar to those. I seem to remember that the dragon is overlooked by the villain because the villain expects more magical protection for the heroine, rather than creature-protection? Also, I think it isn’t a proper dragon (because, if it is a Lackey book, those are elemental magic beings), it’s a dragonlet (or dragonette, I can’t remember which term the author uses).

  6. Sarah O says:

To follow up my own comment… the Kathryne Kennedy suggestion got me looking over my own reading history, and the only book of hers I have read is Enchanting the Lady. I am pretty sure that is the one, since an Amazon review mentions dragonettes. The description of it is also reminiscent to me of the Lackey’s Elemental Masters series, which is probably why I chose to read it.

  7. Rebecca says:

I think that is the one! It is also in my Kindle history- the date doesn’t seem right, but the description is much closer to what I remember…

  8. Emily E says:

I’m pretty sure there were pearl colored eggs in M K Hobson’s The Hidden Goddess.  Another paranormal historical.  But that felt less like a romance to me.  Not quite enough of a HEA.

  9. Rue says:

Seconding/thirding? that it’s Enchanting the Lady by Kennedy. I recognized it right off from the description.

  10. Olivia Waite says:

Anne McCaffrey’s Harper Hall books also feature protective miniature dragons hatching on hearthstones and being worn like necklaces. My twelve-year-old self was super-envious.

  11. Wendy says:

I haven’t read this, but it reminded me of the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. Which are not romances at all but AU historicals about the Napoleonic Wars, with Dragons being an important part of the armed forces on both sides. Temeraire is a dragon who is hatched from an egg on a ship at sea. The worldbuilding is remarkable and fantastic.

  12. Mel Johansson says:

I’m thinking maybe you fired up a doobie while watching Game of Thrones. As you do.

  13. Brigit says:

Yep, that’s the Kathryne Kennedy novel Enchanting the Lady (part of an awesome trilogy). She calls the little dragon Daisy because of it’s white and yellow coloring.

  14. Jesica says:

Thanks everyone! I think its Enchanting the Lady by Kennedy. Now if only it was available on my kindle. Now I have to wait for the mail to come and confirm.

  15. BethSmash says:

Oh, this sounds interesting.  I’m putting it on my list.

  16. Lauren says:

Enchanting the Lady is available on Kindle (and for cheaper than the paperback!):  (http://amzn.to/X9FWNb)

  17. Jimthered says:

As an aside, when Kitty Pryde was still a new character in the comic book X-MEN, she had a pet dragon (Lockheed) who used to wrap himself around her neck/shoulders.
