Books On Sale

Books on Sale: Historical Romance - and Music, Too!

First up: today's Gold Box (snrk) Deal at Amazon is a collection of albums in mp3 format for $1.99 each. I ended up buying Tegan and Sara's Heartthrob, Fiona Apple's Idler Wheel, and a whole mess of other things, including, yes, I admit it, Britney's greatest hits (my workout playlist got 245% more strange today, y'all).

Also: this juxtaposition of John Denver between Britney and JLo made me irrationally happy:

Britney all sweaty wearing black fur and leather, JLo lunging like she's hungry like a wolf, and in the middle: smiling John Denver with a giant floppy hat and big ol' metal glasses and a huge grin. It's so awesome.

I think life on the farm was supposed be kinda laid back, but now I'm not so sure.

And now, books on sale!

Book A Kiss at Midnight - Eloisa James

Eloisa James' A Kiss at Midnight is .99c until 28 February 2013 (probably midnight). It's the first book in her fairy tale series.

Miss Kate Daltry doesn't believe in fairy tales . . . or happily ever after.

Forced by her stepmother to attend a ball, Kate meets a prince . . . and decides he's anything but charming. A clash of wits and wills ensues, but they both know their irresistible attraction will lead nowhere. For Gabriel is promised to another woman—a princess whose hand in marriage will fulfill his ruthless ambitions.

Gabriel likes his fiancée, which is a welcome turn of events, but he doesn't love her. Obviously, he should be wooing his bride-to-be, not the witty, impoverished beauty who refuses to fawn over him. Godmothers and glass slippers notwithstanding, this is one fairy tale in which destiny conspires to destroy any chance that Kate and Gabriel might have a happily ever after.

Unless a prince throws away everything that makes him noble . . .
Unless a dowry of an unruly heart trumps a fortune . . .
Unless one kiss at the stroke of midnight changes everything.

Book My Favorite Bride - Christina Dodd

My Favorite Bride by Christina Dodd is .99c. This is book #5 in her Governess Brides series, and was originally published in 2002.

When Miss Samantha Prendregast arrives at Devil's Fell to take charge of six rebellious girls, the vibrant, outspoken governess is not quite prepared to deal with the tall, dark and dashing master of the grand estate. The children she can manage with intelligence, guile . . . and a little bribery. Their widowed father, Colonel William Gregory, is not so easily charmed — and far too easy to fall in love with, which she dares not do.

William always cherished the orderliness of his life, until this captivating troublemaker began flouting his authority and distracting him with her witty defiance and breathtaking beauty. Despite the fact that they clash at every meeting, William finds himself inexplicablydrawn to Samantha's fire. And now he's even contemplating marriage, which would be sweet madness indeed. But before he can successfully woo her, William must discover what it is that Samantha is hiding from him. But the secret the lady is preciously guarding is far too shocking and dangerous to ever reveal . . .

Book Confessions at Midnight - Jacquie D'Alessandro

Confessions at Midnight is 99c at Amazon, and I think one of her confessions may be that she stole his shower curtain. I would do – that blue is lovely. This is book #2 in the Mayhem in Mayfair series.

Carolyn Turner, Viscountess Wingate, is absolutely shocked by the Ladies Literary Society of London's latest selection. Memoirs of a Mistress is scandalously explicit and downright wicked . . . and it's stirring feelings within Carolyn that she hasn't felt . . . well, ever! She's sure that this steamy read is the only reason she's succumbing to the charms of notorious rogue.

Daniel Sutton, Lord Surbrooke. She couldn't possibly be falling for the rascal and his illicit caresses . . . or could she? The last thing Daniel wanted was to be shackled by marriage vows. He lusted after Carolyn, sure, but he never imagined that once he lured her to his bed he'd never want to let her go. Yet only when a murderer targets his beloved will he be spurred to confess his true love . . . and claim Carolyn as his bride.

I didn’t really love Kiss at Midnight…or any Eloisa James for that matter. It’s sad, because I really wanted to like her books – they sound so good. But her writing is more focused on the historical stuff and filling out the world rather than focusing on the character’s and the plot. Her main character never make me love them, and I don’t end up caring whether they get their HEA. And her sex scenes leave MUCH to be desired – which could be overlooked if the characters were great.

  2. Liz H says:

@Beccah W.- You’ve hit the nail on the head; I always want to like Eloisa James but the characters and plot are so light that I often end up frustrated instead. That said, I did enjoy the first two Fairy Tale books much more than I expected to. (The most recent two, not so much.)

  3. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who snrks at the Amazon Gold Box.

    Worst. Name. Ever.

It reminds me of my first college graduation. I went to a tiny, backwoods community college, and they got some local business person to speak at commencement. She spent the whole time telling us that we should put “treasures” in our “jewel boxes.” The only thing that was more entertaining was when the sound system failed just as the college a cappella group was butchering “Hey Jude,” and the crowd burst into applause. It was a memorable graduation, let me tell you.

I really enjoyed Kiss at Midnight. I may have accidentally downloaded it thinking it was Lara Adrian’s Kiss of Midnight, but it was good nonetheless. Fluffy, uncomplicated. I like that they got over the “posing as her sister” pretense early on. I enjoyed the next one, When Beauty Tamed the Beast more though.

  5. Ladyxbec says:

Argh all I want in life is to take advantage ebook sales, but they never seem to let me.
Does anyone have tips for bypassing regional blocks? I am in Australia and both amazon and iBooks don’t even show the sale prices, and all romanceebooks came up with some “not allowed in your region” thing when I tried to download a kiss at midnight 🙁

  6. Tam B. says:

Actually Ladyxbec – there is a site/software called Overplay – you subscribe and you can access IP addresses all over the world – hence other areas sales.  Hope that helps.

  7. Tammy says:

So glad I’m not the only one that owns Britney Spear’s greatest hits!  Don’t be embarrassed…wear it like a badge!:)

  8. Mochabean1 says:

Just read My Favorite Bride.  Loved the first half—some great Sound of Music shout outs and a feisty heroine who at one point berates the hero for failing to make sure his daughter would know what to expect when she gets her first period. Love it. But then he deploys the alpha-male feistiness-banishing brain-transplanting kiss, becomes a true alpha-hole, and eventually transforms into knife-wielding Colonel McRapey pants (seriously, he holds her down and uses his knife to cut through her nightgown, all the while she is saying no. I’m pretty sure Captain Von Trapp would have cut his nuts off if he’d been there to intervene.) Glad I didn’t pay more than 99 cents for it—should come with an old-skool warning, despite 2002 publishing date.
