Joe's never forgotten the first girl to break his heart, so he's intrigued to hear Keri's back in town—and looking for him. He proposes an outrageous plan—for every day she survives with his family on their annual camping trip, Keri can ask one question.

The chemistry between Joe and Keri is as potent as the bug spray, but Joe's sister is out to avenge his broken heart, and Keri hasn't ridden an ATV since she was ten. Who knew a little blackmail, a whole lot of family and some sizzling romantic interludes could make Keri reconsider the old dream of Keri & Joe 2gether 4ever?

Something Like Normal

This book sale appears to only be valid at Amazon, even though other books on sale from the same publisher are reduced at all retailers. So this is Kindle-only and I am sorry. That said, Something Like Normal is $1.99, and holy crap does this book have strong reviews. I totally bought this after .02 seconds of pondering, and the part I read already is so powerful.

When Travis returns home from Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother's stolen his girlfriend and car, and the nightmares of his best friend getting killed keep him completely spooked. But when he runs into Harper, a girl who despises him for rumors Travis started back in middle school, life actually starts looking up.

And as he and Harper see more of each other, he falls deeper in love with her and begins to find his way through the family meltdown, the post-traumatic stress and the possibility of a interesting future. His sense of humor, sense of his own strength and incredible sense of honor make Travis an irresistible and eminently loveable hero in this fantastic and timely debut novel.

ETA: Heather had this to say about Something Like Normal and with her permission I'm adding her comment to this entry:

For any vets out there, especially of the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, “Something Like Normal” needs to come with a major warning label. I'm only 1/4th of the way through it, but I've been having a lot of things come to the surface because I can identify, in many ways, with the main character and the detachment he feels to his family and old life, as well as the struggle to not be 6,000 miles away all the time. So, any vets who choose to read this, take heed and don't read unless you're in a time and place where you can handle the emotions and memories this book will dredge up. Because it will.

And, via Heather, more things that are free! Harlequin's first book in the KISS line has been free for awhile:

Waking Up Married

NB: I've started calling the guy on the cover “Mr. Teeth Guy.” He and his VERY WHITE TEETH are also on the cover of  Shannon Stacey's All He Ever Desired. This book has some kickin' reviews and, also, it's Free!

Her first thought: “Who are you?” It's the morning after her cousin's bachelorette party in Vegas and Megan Scott wakes up with the mother of all hangovers. Even worse, she's in a stranger's penthouse having woken up with something else as well—a funny, arrogant, sexy…husband!

Up until now, finding even a boyfriend had seemed impossible—been there, got the broken heart, sworn off men for good. Then a few martinis with Carter…no, Connor Reed and she's gone from first meet to marriage in one night! Megan wants a lawyer. But Connor's shocking bombshell? “I don't want a divorce.”

Plus, all the books in Harlequin's KISS line of “fun, flirty” contemporary romances are $1.99 for preorder right now – and I am presuming this is a limited time offer since they go on sale on 1 February digitally. Buy one! It'd be like giving yourself a present that'll surprise you in a couple of weeks. At least, that's what it's like for me because I always forget when I pre-order things and then it's a big happy “Oh, look!” moment when I turn on the Kindle.

The Downfall of a Good Girl “Why would you decide to seduce me? And why now after all these years?”

Southern debutante Vivienne LaBlanc can't believe bad-boy rock star Connor Mansfield is back in town for the New Orleans annual Saints and Sinners pageant. He has a reputation as wicked as his devilish smile, and Vivi has no intention of becoming one of his latest groupies! He once crushed her high school heart, so playing the saint to Connor's sinner should be easy.

But how can Vivi get those less than angelic thoughts out of her head—especially when Connor's so good at tempting her to be bad?

i was just noticing the stubble on the kiss covers. stubble is so hot right now.

also, i read something like normal a month or so ago. i liked it a lot. i’ve never really thought about the young (so young) veterans coming home from the war and trying to stick themselves back into their old lives. the romance was sweet and the characters felt fully developed.

  2. Cecelia Larsen says:

Nice post.  I downloaded the free Kowalski book and bought Something Like Normal (I too have heard good things).  I wouldn’t suggest Waking Up Married – there’s a ton of emotional manipulation/abuse throughout, and I barely finished the book.

  3. Vicki says:

I did get the Shannon Stacy. I’m tempted by the pre-orders but I really like being able to read more reviews from people who have actually read the books. Any hints from anyone who knows more?

  4. Lisa J says:

I bought three of the Kiss books at Diesel for $1.25 each.  It was too good a deal to pass up.

  5. Diane/Anonym2857 says:

I downloaded the Shannon Stacey awhile back, but have yet to read.  May have to move it up in my TBR.  The Afghanistan vet book sounded interesting, so I got that. I bought the Kelly Hunter book because I like her writing. Others intrigued me, but I will check the balance on my Amazon acct before buying more. :o)

  6. Vasha says:

    I wouldn’t suggest Waking Up Married – there’s a ton of emotional manipulation/abuse throughout…

Yeah, the premise sounds icky. Besides, although I’m no lawyer, I know that a marriage (or any other contract) entered into while you’re completely blotto wouldn’t be legally binding.

  7. laj says:

I didn’t like Exculsively Yours.  Too much ATV stuff for my liking.

  8. Anony Miss says:

I love the trope of ‘we got married by accident but want to stay together’ but this one was a little… um, no. The characters themselves were interesting and novel, but I didn’t love the way they pursued and ran.

  9. Heather says:

I rather liked “Waking Up Married” – enough to read it straight through to the end last night. It’s not perfect, but it was a very short book, so some development gaps are to be expected, and it had its charming moments. Still, I think the series has promise and I’m looking forward to picking up the first four and seeing how they hold up.

Also, I love the covers. They’re just wonderful. Thanks for sharing with everyone! I can’t believe how excited I am over this new series line, lol

I’m a veteran of Afghanistan (Army, 5 years, one deployment to the ‘Stan), and as an IRR recall, I was essentially brought back to the US, outprocessed, and three days after touching down on U.S. soil, I was out of the Army and on my own. It was a very bizarre, confusing time. Things in my family had changed drastically in the year I was gone – and nothing was as I’d left it. Fireworks on the 4th of July (scarcely two weeks after I’d gotten back) had me a quivering mess. I called a buddy who’d been out there with me, and she was on the phone with me for most of two hours. We were both freaked about it.

Top the struggle to come home to a place where you feel like an alien off with the struggle to find work – the only job I could get was a low-pay food service job – and coming home isn’t a picnic, even a year and a half down the line. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wished I was back in Afghanistan.

  10. Heather says:

It’s hard. VERY hard. I’ve been back a year and a half and I’m still trying to readjust. The whole experience changes you at a very deep level, and “normal life” often doesn’t feel like the reality.

  11. Heather, I was an IRR recall too! Though I was reactivated in 2002 (Arabic linguist) and only went to Iraq and Afghanistan as a civilian. But I had the same demob process – 18 months in Germany, no ACAP classes, then 3 days to out process Ft. Sill and hey, welcome back to being a civilian!

If you’d like another buddy to chat with, or some help on the job search (I’m a corporate recruiter in real life), let me know. I’m always happy to help a fellow veteran.

As for the books, I just got four of them according to my open Amazon tabs. I’m excited for The One that Got Away ‘cause I lovelovelove reunion stories.

  12. Elyse says:

The guy on the cover Waking Up Wed is staring at her in a seriously creepy way…

  13. HJ says:

As a UK readers I always find these posts frustrating (not your fault, I know) because almost invariably the reductions don’t show up here.  But today was particularly bad, because not only is the Shannon Stacey not free but in fact it costs £5.59, which is expensive for an ebook (about twice what I’d expect for a romance).

  14. Sally says:

The Shannon Stacey book is also free at the Carina Press website, if you want to give that one a try.

  15. SB Sarah says:

Hey HJ: I’m sorry this is frustrating. I wonder if there’s a way I can feature some UK deals. Let me get on that right now. I’m sorry.

  16. MarieC says:

I just ordered two, ‘The One that Got Away’ and ‘How to Get Over Your Ex’. I like how amazon has excerpts of the stories without have to request samples…

  17. GhengisMom says:

So, while “buying” the Shannon Stacey book, this freebie came up as well. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/

What the blazes is going on on that cover?

  18. I’d like and appreciate that, Taylor. It’s true, nobody gets what a struggle it can be except people who’ve been there/done that.

  19. No idea, but it looks like Orlando Bloom circa “Pirates of the Carribean” playing hairdresser, and OMG! His hands turned into HORSE HEADS! …. Freaky.

  20. For any vets out there, especially of the Iraq or Afghanistan wars, “Something Like Normal” needs to come with a major warning label. I’m only 1/4th of the way through it, but I’ve been having a lot of things come to the surface because I can identify, in many ways, with the main character and the detachment he feels to his family and old life, as well as the struggle to not be 6,000 miles away all the time. 21. Hi Heather – I emailed your FB account, check the “Other” folder.

  22. SB Sarah says:

Oh, Heather, I’m sorry. If it’s ok with you, I’d like to add your comment above to the listing for the book. Would that be ok?

  23. GhengisMom says:

Seriously! Horse heads?! I thought it must be a paranormal of some sort, but that is NOT what the description says. Can you imagine a paranormal starring a man with horse heads for arms! Some sort of factory accident centaur? LOL!

  24. I just read Waking Up Married and I found the premise fairly amusing and it was decent for a while. Then about 2/3 of the way through the guy suddenly became a complete asshat, after which it was pretty much over for me. But I’d be willing to try another KISS title because I like the general chicklit-ish feel of it. And the covers are cute, which counts for more than it should.

  25. Laskiblue says:

I could not stand Waking Up Married for even a dozen pages.  (I’m one of the one star reviewers for it on Amazon.)
