It's the day after Christmas, where all through the mall… well, I have no idea what's going on the mall because you couldn't pay me enough to go there today. I know many of the “after Thanksgiving” sales started ON Thanksgiving this year, and I'm wondering how soon until stores open at 9 or 10pm on Christmas Day.

There are a LOT of books on sale today and this week. Have you found any awesome bargains that made you excited? Here are a few, including this one that's good only for today from Sourcebooks.

The Ruins of Lace by Iris Anthony The Ruins of Lace by Iris Anthony is .99c, which is over 90% off. Wow, what a cover, huh?

Lace is a thing like hope.
It is beauty; it is grace.
It was never meant to destroy so many lives. The mad passion for forbidden lace has infiltrated France, pulling soldier and courtier into its web. For those who want the best, Flemish lace is the only choice, an exquisite perfection of thread and air. For those who want something they don't have, Flemish lace can buy almost anything-or anyone. For Lisette, lace begins her downfall, and the only way to atone for her sins is to outwit the noble who know demands an impossible length of it. To fail means certain destruction. But for Katharina, lace is her salvation. It is who she is; it is what she does. If she cannot make this stunning tempest of threads, a dreaded fate awaits.

Lady X's Cowboy - Zoe Archer Lady X's Cowboy by Zoe Archer (SBTB Grade: C) is .99c for a limited time. I liked this heroine a LOT – what's not to like about a beer-brewing businesswoman heroine in London? – but a simplistic villain bugged me. That said, Archer is a very strong writer, and it's a pretty enjoyable read.

Constrained by her life as a Society widow, Lady Olivia Xavier finds escape in two unusual ways: as the owner of a successful brewery, and as a secret reader of penny dreadful Western novels. But Olivia’s beloved brewery is being threatened, and she has no ally in her fight. Until a mysterious cowboy steps out from the London fog, saving her from a terrifying brawl. Suddenly, Olivia isn’t just reading about the Wild West, she’s living it.

Colorado cowboy Will Coffin has made the long journey from his Rocky Mountain home to discover his birthright. While searching for his family, he encounters the beguiling Olivia. Will’s never met a real English lady before—certainly not one as lovely and courageous as Olivia—and he can’t resist coming to her rescue. Olivia is powerfully drawn to the rough but honorable cowboy. She proposes a most scandalous arrangement: in exchange for helping protect her brewery, she’ll help Will find his family. Even more scandalous is that he’ll be sleeping under her roof. The entire arrangement sets Society’s tongues wagging.

Meanwhile, the danger to the brewery, and Olivia herself, keeps escalating. But nothing’s as dangerous, or seductive, as the growing desire between the lady and the cowboy…

Let's Pretend this Never Happened - Jenny Lawson Let's Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson is $1.99 digitally. This is a memoir by The Bloggess, and while I haven't read it, many people have told me it's wheeze-funny reading.

Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives—the ones we’d like to pretend never happened—are in fact the ones that define us. In the #1 New York Times bestseller, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes readers on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor. Chapters include: “Stanley the Magical, Talking Squirrel”; “A Series of Angry Post-It Notes to My Husband”; “My Vagina Is Fine. Thanks for Asking”; “And Then I Snuck a Dead Cuban Alligator on an Airplane.” Pictures with captions (no one would believe these things without proof) accompany the text.

Digital verison of L.A. Requiem by Robert Crais is on sale for $1.99. It’s a mid-series book from his Elvis Cole/Joe Pike myseries, and in my opinion one of the best in the series.

I absolutely loved Let’s Pretend It Never Happened; I love the blog but was worried the book wouldn’t live up to expectations. It was definitely wheeze-funny, and in one painful instance was coffee-snorting and choking funny, leading to real fears of dying of laughter. It’s possible to read in sections without interrupting, but I was laughing so much I didn’t want to stop.

  2. Amy Raby (Alpha Lyra) says:

The Jenny Lawson book is REALLY funny. It’s a little on the edgy side—perfect for me, maybe not ideal for some readers. Anyone who’s uncertain can jump over to her blog (The Bloggess) and read a few entries to see if they like the style.

  3. Caitlin Moran’s How to be a Woman and Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale are both on sale for $1.99 today at Amazon. I snapped them up because a) I’ve been wanting to read them both for a while but couldn’t bring myself to pay $10 or $15 for an ebook, and b) The Handmaid’s Tale is an upcoming book in my local book club.

LOVE Jenny Lawson. As Amy commented above, she has a very particular style of writing. Pretty edgy, a little rambling. If you like her blog the book is definitely wheezy laugh funny!

The Ruins of Lace isn’t on sale for 99 cents at Amazon or BN as far as I can tell. Is there somewhere I can find it for that price?
