Books on Sale Today: Winter Seas and Elemental Assassins

There are a couple of books on sale today that I want you to know about:

The Winter Sea - Susanna Kearsley

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99 today – this book is amazing. It was a Book Club Pick in April 2011, and it blew my mind how absorbing and touching it was. It's really a wonderful, powerful story. I can't recommend this book more forcefully. I will strong arm you into it! I'll come to your house and arm wrestle you until you buy it! Seriously, it's lovely.

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.

Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.

But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth—the ultimate betrayal—that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her…

While we're shopping, how would you like five books in an urban fantasy series for $15 total? Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series (also known as the Gin Blanco series)  is on sale for $2.99 each. According to GoodReads, there are nine total books (two coming in 2013) and a handful of stories in this series, so getting five for $15 sounds like quite a good deal!

Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep

Spider's Bite, book #1, by Jennifer Estep is $2.99.

After Gin’s family was murdered by a Fire elemental when she was thirteen, she lived on the streets and eventually became an assassin to survive. Web of Lies - Jennifer Estep Web of Lies, book #2, is $2.99.

You might know me as the Spider, the most feared assassin in the South. I’m retired now, but trouble still has a way of finding me. Like the other day when two punks tried to rob my popular barbecue joint, the Pork Pit. Then there was the barrage of gunfire on the restaurant. Only, for once, those kill shots weren’t aimed at me. They were meant for Violet Fox. Ever since I agreed to help Violet and her grandfather protect their property from an evil coalmining tycoon, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m really retired. So is Detective Donovan Caine. The only honest cop in Ashland is having a real hard time reconciling his attraction to me with his Boy Scout mentality. And I can barely keep my hands off his sexy body. What can I say? I’m a Stone elemental with a little Ice magic thrown in, but my heart isn’t made of solid rock. Luckily, Gin Blanco always gets her man . . . dead or alive.

Venom - Jennifer Estep Venom, book #3, is also $2.99.

It’s hard to be a badass assassin when a giant is beating the crap out of you. Luckily, I never let pride get in the way of my work. My current mission is personal: annihilate Mab Monroe, the Fire elemental who murdered my family. Which means protecting my identity, even if I have to conceal my powerful Stone and Ice magic when I need it most. To the public, I’m Gin Blanco, owner of Ashland’s best barbecue joint. To my friends, I’m the Spider, retired assassin. I still do favors on the side. Like ridding a vampire friend of her oversized stalker—Mab’s right-hand goon who almost got me dead with his massive fists. At least irresistible Owen Grayson is on my side. The man knows too much about me, but I’ll take my chances. Then there’s Detective Bria Coolidge, one of Ashland’s finest. Until recently, I thought my baby sister was dead. She probably thinks the same about me. Little does she know, I’m a cold-blooded killer . . . who is about to save her life.

Tangled Threads - Jennifer Estep Tangled Threads, book #4, by Jennifer Estep is $2.99

I’d rather face a dozen lethal assassins any night than deal with something as tricky, convoluted, and fragile as my feelings. But here I am. Gin Blanco, the semi-retired assassin known as the Spider. Hovering outside sexy businessman Owen Grayson’s front door like a nervous teenage girl. One thing I like about Owen: he doesn’t shy away from my past—or my present. And right now I have a bull’s-eye on my forehead. Cold-blooded Fire elemental Mab Monroe has hired one of the smartest assassins in the business to trap me. Elektra LaFleur is skilled and efficient, with deadly electrical elemental magic as potent as my own Ice and Stone powers. Which means there’s a fifty-fifty chance one of us won’t survive this battle. I intend to kill LaFleur—or die trying—because Mab wants the assassin to take out my baby sister, Detective Bria Coolidge, too. The only problem is, Bria has no idea I’m her long-lost sibling . . . or that I’m the murderer she’s been chasing through Ashland for weeks. And what Bria doesn’t know just might get us both dead. . . .

Spider's Revenge - Jennifer Estep Spider's Revenge, book #5, by Jennifer Estep is $2.99.

Killing used to be my regular gig, after all. Gin Blanco, aka the Spider, assassin-for-hire. And I was very, very good at it. Now, I’m ready to make the one hit that truly matters: Mab Monroe, the dangerous Fire elemental who murdered my family when I was thirteen. Oh, I don’t think the mission will be easy, but turns out it’s a bit more problematic than expected. The bitch knows I’m coming for her. So now I’m up against the army of lethal bounty hunters Mab hired to track me down. She also put a price on my baby sister’s head. Keeping Bria safe is my first priority. Taking Mab out is a close second. Good thing I’ve got my powerful Ice and Stone magic—and my irresistible lover, Owen Grayson—to watch my back. This battle has been years in the making, and there’s a good chance I won’t survive. But if I’m going down, then Mab’s coming with me . . . no matter what I have to do to make that happen.

Gin Bianco is one of my favorite UF heroines. This is a great series at a bargain price! I am off to fill up my nook since I have most of them in paper.

  2. Theresa Stutzman says:

Winter Sea isn’t showing up on sale at iBooks, which makes me sad.

  3. GhengisMom says:

I adore Susanna Kearsley! I need Mariana to go on sale. I can’t pay $10 for an ebook. Maybe someone will give me a gift certificate for Christmas. I can justify it then. Maybe it will even cover pre-ordering her new book.

    Santa, are you listening?!?!

  4. Anna_Lucie says:

The Winter Sea is so wonderful, one of my all time favorites (as is Mariana). Susanna Kearsley is amazing…though I was a bit disappointed by Rose Garden. I guess they can’t all be the best thing I’ve ever read, right? I can’t recommend The Winter Sea highly enough, just buy it!

  5. Karenmc says:

I cant look at the cover for Venom without thinking of Jim C. Hines.

  6. What good timing. I had already decided to buy my MIL The Winter Sea for Christmas, but I kept procrastinating. I suppose I should go do that now. This will be the fourth or fifth copy I’ve bought because I love that book so much (though I think Mariana is my favorite Susanna Kearsley book).

  7. larissa says:

While for me there’s something a little too neat and tidy about Susanna Kearsley’s novels, I loved the last scene in Winter Sea. I seem to recall it’s the last scene, or maybe the near-last. I don’t want to spoil it by referring to what happens. I cried and cried. I can see it my mind to this day.

If I were to recommend one of her books, that would surely be it. In fact, I think it might qualify as one of those comforting books some people are looking for. It was a very warm book to me. The people were so comfortable to be with.

  8. I had the exact same experience. I loved TWS, so I bought Mariana, which was perfect, and The Rose Garden, which was disappointing. It was better than a lot of other books, but not up to my heightened expectations. Still, I think my disappointment in TRG is a compliment to Kearsley’s skill; I would have loved it if I hadn’t already experienced the awesomeness of TWS & co.

  9. Cate Hulk says:

My brain got all froze up at the name James Stewart. I kept trying to reconcile 1700s Jacobites with Jimmy Stewart and it doesn’t really mesh. Which is silly because that is not such a weird or unusual name or anything.

  10. Allie says:

I just bought all of your recommendations.  This is what happens when I have a margarita while reading this site.
