Something Different on Sunday: You in 1994

I have been cleaning my office and finding all sorts of fun things, like pictures of me as a baby, books (duh), and old journals and lists – including a list of things to do that I wrote back in 1994. I tweeted about it this morning, and the responses were very funny and inspiring, so I wanted to share them with you.

This isn't about romance novels, but I love how many people had goals to be writers, and are now. I don't know that I ever had a goal to be a writer, but on the list was “write more.” In 1997, I started my first online journal, and haven't stopped writing online since. I love that the internet has given me ample space to write, and meet so many people.

So what did you want to do in 1994? Have a look at the (considerable!) list of responses from this morning as a slideshow, or as a page at Storify. What did you want to do in 1994?

What did you want to do in 1994?

While cleaning my office, I found a list I’d written of “Things To Do in 1994.” I asked other people what they’d wanted to do back in 1994. The replies were funny and inspiring. I wanted to collect them all – sorry if there are duplicates. And my apologies for clogging your tweetstream this morning.

  1. Mom_on_the_run2001 says:

I’d just had my 4th child in 7 years, so I’m pretty sure all I wanted to do was sleep. And maybe get a shower in between driving my minivan around town in circles.

  2. Anna says:

Hmm.  I would have been 12 or 13, so I’ll bet a lot of my list would have included doing things my parents wouldn’t let me do at that age.  Things like “wear purple nail polish” (my mom thought only shades of pink were appropriate for young girls), “act,” and “get a date.”  Twelve-year-old me would be very pleased to hear I’ve managed to do all those things since then.

  3. I’d just given birth to my third child..life was good and my list would have been something like be super mom, super wife..lol

  4. Sveta says:

I just came to America and was only 8 going on 9. My thoughts would have included me wanting to go back to Russia due to language differences, how much I hate the weather and how disappointed I felt.

  5. Jamarleo says:

I don’t know if I ever made a list, but I’m almost positive it had to do with living life on the edge, and never leaving NYC.

    Signed,
The stay at home mom from deep suburbia

  6. Katherine Bacher says:

I was still little, and wanted to be an orthodontist. That was before having to go through braces twice and becoming bitter about the subject.

  7. DreadPirateRachel says:

I was a wee sprog, and all I wanted to do was read. And yes, that’s what I did. I read constantly, hiding under beds and using a flashlight while trying to turn the pages quietly. Today, I’ve graduated to an ereader and the top of the bed, but the incessant reading continues. In fact, I just (finally) finished a degree in Reading All the Books, so I’d say I pursued that dream pretty damn hard.

  8. ECSpurlock says:

In 1994 I had finally got pregnant with my second son after years of trying; so I mostly wanted to (a) give birth, (b) finish my parents’ anniversary gift (hand-stitched pillows), and (c) get through my parents’ massive 50th Anniversary party with nobody melting down. Did all 3 and it was a wonderful, memorable experience for all, contrary to expectations.

  9. Laurel says:

I wanted to learn Spanish so I got a green card and moved to Argentina in 1994. During the World Cup. I thought the entire country was insane, but I did learn Spanish!

  10. cleo says:

I think that this happened in early 1994 (maybe 93) – I used to write my work to do list on the train, on my way to my (not very exciting) job.  One morning, without thinking about it, I instead wrote something like “I don’t want to go to work today.  I want to go to art school.”

And amazingly enough, I did.  I didn’t give notice immediately or anything, but I did start grad school studying design in the fall of 94.

  11. Jeanne Miro says:

In 1994 my husband who had been in the Navy during Vietnam was in the Navy Reserves having fun mjeaissions like searching for Russian Subs in the Straits of Gilbralter while my older son was in the Navy on a battleship and my younger son was a cadet at The Citadel.

That meant in 1994 I spent a lot of time worrying that my husband and son were both safe and my younger son would decide NOT to accept that Navy commision that they were offering him!

Needless to say it was a stressful time.  My older son finished his duty in the Navy and my husband finally retired.  Best of all the Navy offering my younger son a position on a submarine and since he was on an academic schlorhship he turned it down!  He wanted to be a NFO and hated small enclosed places.  Fortunately he had an academic schlorship and not a schlorhsip from the Navy so he could gracefully say no!

In 1994 I spent a lot of time worrying that my loved ones were safe.

Today whenever I listen to the news my heart and prayers go out to all the families and loved ones of those serving in the military everyday.

  12. For most of 1994, I was 7 and mostly I was concerned with making my first communion and trying to be a good Catholic girl, which meant not talking back to the mean girls that picked on me all the time.  Yeah, by the time 1995 rolled around I wasn’t interesting in being a “good Catholic” anymore and more concerned with not letting them see me cry and wishing for elementary school to be over, so I can get away from them—ironically enough, the girls in high school were much nicer than the ones in 2nd grade.

  13. In 1994 I was in college. Can’t really remember what exactly my goals were then. (Thankfully, not due to excessive alcohol. 🙂  )

  14. Liz Talley says:

1994 was a big year for me. I graduated from college, got married, move to New Orleans, and started my first teaching job. When I look back, I’m like “Whoa!’ cause that was a lot of change in a short amount of time.

Writing wasn’t on my radar, although while working part time at a law firm, I read Anne Rice’s book about Witches (can’t recall title) and I started writing the first story I wasn’t required to write for school – just messing around on my lunch break. Then because I was homesick, my brother and I sent each other “romance” stories revolving around my uncle and a lady he always stopped into to visit with at a gas station. My brother dubbed it “A Circle K Kind of Love” and I beleive there was wild sex on the candy aisle and something to do with being rewarded with a snickers candy bar. Silliness that created a kernel inside of me. So, yeah, 1994 was a big year for me.

Maybe I need a book with a Circle K gas station sex scene…or maybe not 🙂

  15. Tam says:

I made a list of very precise and wildly ambitious goals in about ‘94, which I’ve still kept in a journal somewhere: firstly, run away to Oxford and get a doctorate in English literature; secondly, produce two children, preferably one at twenty-seven and one at twenty-nine so I’d be done by thirty (at which point I’d be impossibly old from an adolescent perspective); and thirdly, publish my first book by thirty.  I managed two out of three, and those two were a lot harder than I’d predicted at fourteen.

  16. Mirandaflynn says:

I was 30, which my husband and I had set as a decision point on whether to have kids. I ultimately decided against it, but I spent a lot of that year considering it.

    Miranda

  17. Sophia says:

I love this post. I was a single mom and scared shitless. But looking back I was together, focused and I kicked ass!

  18. cleo says:

I remember my college goals – or rather my goals when I graduated college (in 91).  They were quite simple: 1 – move to Chicago, 2 – get a job, and 3 – get my head screwed on straight.  I believe I even wrote them down.  I achieved the first two in a matter of months – #3 turns out to be an ongoing challenge.

  19. When I was a little girl I wanted to be a scientist, despite not really knowing what that involved. 18 years later I am in my first year of graduate school studying molecular biology. It’s not exactly what I imagined and I never wear a lab coat, but I love it all the same.

  20. SB Sarah says:

I miss both the Circle K and the Flying J – there could be quite an erotic series involving gas stations, especially if you head out west to the Kum and Go.

  21. MaddBookish says:

I graduated high school that year and was looking at my future like “What the hell am I going to do now?” I had more of an idea of what I did NOT want to do with my life than what I did want. I knew that I never wanted to get married, have kids or be a housewife. I think I had some vague notion of being a starving artists boho lady.

Now I’m a stay at home mom in the suburbs with three kids. lol Life is weird.

  22. X Bettylibertine X says:

I was 3 so probably not much really LOL. Not sleep and be a maniac?

  23. CarrieS says:

I was in college, about to graduate, scared out of my mind and trying to decide where to go and hat to do.  I planned to save the world, probably be killed in a violent country, and never have kids or get married.  Now I’m a mom in suburbia and I’m looking forward to a long and happy life – but I’m still really into saving the world, albiet in less dramatic and perilous ways.

I was starting school for my library degree, which required me to quit my full-time but dead end job and move to a different state. In the midst of which, my husband got a job in a third state, so we spent a year mostly apart. For about a month after school started I cried every night on the phone, telling him I wanted to come home because I was ruining our marriage. He gently but firmly told me to stay put.

So, the marriage is now in year 23, I’m in year 15 of being a librarian, we live in a different state entirely, and all is well.

I was in my fifth year of a job that required a great deal of travel, and ready to change that.  So 1994 was spent mostly trying to find a way off the road – took a year but successfully moved into the next phase of that career (although corporate mergers changed my path a couple times, I was fairly satisfied which what I accomplished before I “retired” to the SAHM gig.)  That was also the year I took a good look at my dating life and did not like the pattern I saw.  The wake-up call came at the right time since along came a guy worth keeping and we’ve been together since.

Kum and Go? Oh, that’s ripe for quick sex on the candy aisle. LOL.

I wish I could find those funny little short stories my brother and I excanged. There was a part where a mole was nibbled upon that just…well, it almost brings tears to my eyes when I remember.

  27. Jimthered says:

Back in 1994, I had my Master’s degree in English for a year and wanted to be an editor/proofreader/writer.  Unfortunately, I spent most of my time bouncing from temp job to temp job.  While I eventually spent three years at a high-paying ($30K) job filled with editing, proofreading, and writing, that job vanished when the tech bubble burst; and now I work in retail, wondering if my degree will ever be a professional help again…

  28. Nita says:

In 1994 I was in 8th and 9th grade…so I think my goals consisted of “find cool new friends” and “survive freshman year.” Oh, and to watch X-Files every week. Good times.

  29. Loni says:

I was 2 then and just wanted my parents to stop taking me out into the sunshine. They didn’t know I was an albino then, bit of a shock when they found out.
I also wanted to chew on the furniture, fortunately I grew out of that.

  30. StarOpal says:

In 1994 I would’ve been 10. I wanted to marry Matt Doss, literally, the boy next door (he was super dreamy and would let me ride the handlebars on his bike). Become a spy ala James Bond or a dancer (I was taking tap, jazz, AND ballet at the time).

  31. DesLivres says:

In 1994 I was finishing my law degree and had chronic fatigue. In there I also managed a trip to an ashram in India – before having to return for an evidence exam. Fun Times!

  32. Lynnd says:

In 1994 I was a baby lawyer just starting out and had just started dating my soon-to-be husband.  IIRC, it was a good year.

  33. Allison says:

When I was 14 or 15—which would have been in ‘81 or ‘82 or thereabouts—I made a Life List of the things I wanted to do before I died.  Some things put there were incredibly ludicrous since I was reading a LOT of Harlequins back then and I would be mortified to disclose them publicly.  Some were surprisingly adult and serious, like No. 23:  Change someone’s life for the better.

Amazingly, I’ve managed to keep hold of that list through thirty years and too many moves and stuff purges to count.  I have been surprised by the things I’ve managed to check off and more surprised by the things I haven’t.  I haven’t found my hero but I have managed to inspire a poem (No. 7), wear a perfect size 6 (No. 19—but it was only temporary, sad sigh).

Some things probably will never get a check mark.  Like drive at Le Mans (No. 33).  I’m thinking that’s probably never going to happen.  And No. 1 back then?  Play at Wimbledon.  While I meant play in the tourney, I wrote the wish with sufficient vagueness that simply walking onto a court and banging a couple balls across the net would be check-worthy.  I was such a little lawyer even then.

  34. Wendy says:

Ahhhh…1994 goals. Win a screenwriting Oscar. Publish a book. Make a spectacular archaeological discovery. Know how to tell the age at death/sex of a skeleton. Play in the London Symphony (‘cause, hello! Movie scores!) Make my mom boot my dad from the house. Make everyone I hated grovel at my (faux Doc Marten-clad) feet. Yep. I was in 8th grade. Why do you ask? (My teenage self terrifies me. Delusions of grandeur on a scale that only registers narcissistic personality disorder.)
Realistically, I think my goals were: be a better violinist, have some friends, go to a good college…and publish a book.
I, at least, have friends—many of whom date back to 1994—and went to a good college where I learned a whole lot about skeletons, including how to determine age at death and sex of the individual.

    Thanks for all the sharing!

  35. Layla says:

I was in 4th grade. I wanted to be a writer and never ever get married. Now I’m in grad school, which takes care of the writing component, but not quite in the way I expected.

  36. VandyJ says:

I was 21 and finishing my last year of college—just a bachelor’s.  My hubby, then boyfriend, still ahd two yeas of school left, so I was concerned with job hunting, and reading as much as I could—cause I had finished school and didn’t have to go anymore.

  37. For me, 1994 spanned a lot of changes. After I finished my second year of law school, I had a summer job in Seattle (first time with daily access to a car since 1988, so I chased fire trucks leaving the station across the street from my summer job, b/c yes, they do look good in those uniforms). Although there must have been lots of to-do lists regarding being a summer law associate, I remember none of them. In the fall of 94 I had a nose job, which changed my personality for the better – no more class clown! List for that: apply ice filled rubber glove to face and squeeze bridge of nose multiple times daily. At the end of 94 I had to choose between staying in San Fran and moving north to Seattle when I graduated. I distinctly remember making pro and con lists about that, b/c I liked the SF job better but I loved Seattle itself, so it was a hard choice.

  38. Ruth Madison says:

    Awwww. That’s so cool.

I definitely planned to be a writer in 1994 and now I am. 🙂

  39. That’s terribly clever… using the widget thing for that.  🙂

  40. ECSpurlock says:

Circle K’s and Flying J’s are still around down here. Along with the Hop-In and the Marathon.

Somebody needs to write a road-trip romance featuring all these gas stations.
