Covers That Make You Go, “Hey! That Looks Like…” Part Deux

Time for another round of, “Hey! That Looks Like…” where the cover models look like someone and usually it makes me insane that I can't idenitfy who it is. Familiarity is such a tease.

Loving Jack by Nora Roberts - two people in a speed boat, and the chick looks like Angie Harmon from Law & Order

Putting aside the fact that her hair is a windswept mess while his hair is perfect (what's he got on his head, a half bottle of Dippity Do?), doesn't it look like Marv Albert is getting to second base with Angie Harmon on that cover?

Her Ideal Man by Ruth Wind - long haired guy with dark roots who looks exactly like Brad Pitt nuzzling the jugular of this chick who looks familiar but I can't figure out who she is.

Clearly her ideal man is Brad Pitt. I suspect she's not alone in that, though he needs to touch up his roots.

She looks like someone, too. Carol Alt? It's hard to tell since she's all chin, lips and jugular.

Ok, you need to give me a hand with this one. Who does Megan's Mate look like? (I assume she's Megan. I could be wrong). Seriously, I've been staring at it for about twenty minutes straight, and I can't figure it out. I thought maybe someone I'd seen on an 80s sitcom or soap opera, but a search of the shows I used to watch yielded bupkus.

I do love that their blazers match, though. That's adorable. Without reading the back cover, I'm guessing they are tour guides, only he's more popular because he looks like that guy. You know – that guy. So people follow him around staring at him, trying to figure out who he looks like.

Now this isn't a “That Looks Like…” cover, but I've been cleaning out my office bookshelves and found this lovely cover that just combines all the old-skool wtfery so nicely. I had to share!

Sweet Seduction by Patricia Pellicane. He's holding onto a rope on board a ship, but flowers are exploding under him, and a seagull is about to crap on his shoulder from mid-air.

This guy's Facebook update: “I was buckling my swash on board when flowers exploded on deck and a bird crapped on me before I could get my shirt back on. FML.”

The back is also awesome:

The back cover text is insane - Gypsies! Heiresses! Honeyed mouth, insistent caresses! - plus he's about to set fire to her in the picture.

Her Facebook update: “Ladies, watch out. Avoid 'Sweet Wild Enchantment Man' on OKCupid. Not only did he abduct me from my family's gypsy camp, subject me to insistent caresses, call me a shameless temptress AND make me cry, he ALSO set fire to my dress and expected me not to notice! Worst first date ever.”

  1. Tina says:

I think Megan’s Mate looks a lot like a younger Jack Wagner

  2. ckscott13 says:

I’m seeing Harry Hamlin from LA law – and a touch of a young Robert Wagner around the eyes.  The girl in Megan’s Mate reminds me of Lauren Tewes from the Loveboat.  Very 80s either way

  3. Dina says:

I think that’s Doug McClure (this just shows how old I am——-)

  4. Lindz says:

    Ditto on Harry Hamlin.

  5. Lia says:

Meghan’s Mate: definitely Ridge Forrester aka The Wooden One from the Bold & the Beautiful to me!

  6. I thought the cover model on Loving Jack was a bit like Ali MacGraw. And that last dude is doing my head in, too. It’s on the tip of my brain’s tongue….  Also have to add that the back cover blurb for Sweet Seduction reads as though someone threw The Romance Thesaurus into a blender and gave it a jolly good whizz around.

  7. Janestewart says:

My first thoughts were Ali McGraw (Loving Jack) and young Robert Wagner (Megan’s Mate).  Ckscott13 and sarah mayberry – you guys are fast – beat me to it.

  8. Shawny Jean says:

See, I think Loving Jack is totally Mitt Romney, but it may just be that I’m not old enough to see Robert Wagner. I see Mitt Romney, and then I get all squicky.

  9. Sandra says:

Agree with Ali MacGraw on #1 and Robert Wagner on #3. As for #2—Michelle Pfeiffer, maybe? And that last cover, shouldn’t that bird be a pelican rather than a gull crapping on Andi McDowell and Michael Keaton? Seems more appropriate.

  10. BitsyRavenclaw says:

In order of covers (I’m too lazy to scroll up and down for titles): Young RDJ, THOR, Matt Bomer, and Megan looks like she could be a stand-in for April O’Neil.

  11. Janestewart says:

Your picture of Sweet Seduction reminded me of Gentle Rogue (by Johanna Lindsey).  This guy’s face reminds me of male perfection.  I don’t think there was an actor or model like him – similar to Fabio but not.

  12. JW Ashley says:

Over at Books with Benefits, whenever we review a book, we also review the covers. If we like the cover, we file it under “Got You Covered.” If we don’t like it, we file it under “Cover Me.” Fans of the blog have said they find the cover reviews fun and funny. But… let me just tell you… some folks do NOT like it when you say negative things about their covers. Despite my insistence that bad covers are the work of too-busy design teams and that our “Cover Me” stuff is good for readers, writers, and the genre as a whole, some writers have really hated hearing anything bad at all. I say, “Long Live Cover ME!” I say, “Long Live Clinch Cover Snark!” After all, my own book is coming out soon, and, when I see my cover in a few days, I might have something of my very own to snark about. 😉  I have to admit, some of these covers would deter me from buying the book at a retailer, but… thank the sweet heavens for Kindle.

  13. Liz Talley says:

The Megan’s Mate chick reminds me of Brooke from All my Children, with a little bit of Geena Davis mixed in. But I use to watch AMC in the 90s and that’s who I thought of immediately.

And I agree that Loving Jack heroine looks like Angie Harmon.

  14. Virginia E says:

Megan’s Mate looks like Robert Wagner & Stephanie Powers from the TV series, Hart to Hart (1979 – 1984). As proof, I submit this picture link for IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm32…

  15. Beccah W. says:

    “Her Ideal Man”…definitely Michelle pfeiffer!

  16. Beccah W. says:

Oh, and “Megan’s Mate” is clearly a young Meg Ryan

  17. Christine says:

Yes- I totally agree! I think it’s the lips.

For Megan’s Mate, I get a bit of a James Brolin vibe, myself. Also agree about Loving Jack’s Ali McGraw or possibly Natalie Wood?

  18. Jules says:

Her Ideal Man does indeed remind me of a young Brad Pitt maybe around the time of Interview with a Vampire. That also may be because of the neck macking… I also agree with BitsyRavenclaw and see a bit of Chris Hemsworth aka Thor in his face.

And for Megan’s Mate? I only see Pierce Brosnon circa his Bond days.

  19. Anon says:

I thought Her Ideal Man looked like Colin Farrell with that godawful blond dye job from “Alexander”.

  20. I’m kind of stuck on the barcode sticker affixed to the back of Sweet Seduction: ‘UsedVeryGood’. I can’t decide whether it’s referring to the condition of the book or the heroine after her time in Tristan’s ‘tight grip’ …

  21. Amy says:

I also Harry Hamlin on the cover of Megan’s Mate.  But the bigger question is why are they wearing the same outfit? Maybe a BOGO sale at TJ Maxx?

  22. RedSky3 says:

    I think it’s the blazers…

  23. Raine says:

I was distracted by the sticker too!! It reminded me of my misspent youth when I “borrowed” a “Rent Me” sign from Rug Doctor and wore it around town.

  24. I think Megan’s Mate looks like Harry Hamlin…

  25. starropal says:

The guy on book 1 is a little more Cris Collinsworth to me. (But OMG that is totally Angie Harmon!)

The woman on book 2 is Pamela Hemsley.

While I can see where you’re all getting Harry Hamlin, the man on book 3 is Ray Wise.

On Sweet Seduction: She’s young Elizabeth Taylor, he has gas pains.

  26. starropal says:

Yes, that’s exactly who he looks like! Glad I’m not the only one who saw it

  27. Is anyone else getting Melanie Griffith as ‘Tess’ from Working Girl (post cheating boyfriend hair-chop) from Megan’s Mate?

  28. Maria says:

The woman who played in Weird Science. Everyone knows her name except me. She is the one on the last Nora Roberts cover.

  29. SB Sarah says:

HARRY HAMLIN is definitely who I was thinking of but couldn’t remember – but you are on to something with Jack Wagner, too.

Also: @sarahmayberry – “someone threw The Romance Thesaurus into a blender and gave it a jolly good whizz around” made me laugh so hard. HA!

  30. cleo says:

I was thinking Megan looked like a young Melanie Griffith (cira Working Girl), but I see Meg Ryan too.

  31. Alyssa Cole says:

Am I the only one who thinks Megan’s Mate looks like Dexter?

  32. Shae Connor says:

Megan is Geena Davis, and her Mate is Harry Hamlin. Totally.

Also the last one is Peter Gallagher and Elizabeth Taylor. Obviously one of them is also a time traveler.

  33. cleo says:

I posted without seeing your comment – I totally (like totally, it’s so tubular) see Melanie Griffith in Megan’s Mate

  34. I think Megan’s mate looks like Ivan Sergei.  He played Paige’s husband on Charmed.

  35. karen Eidukas says:

giggling so much I cant do a good reply to this lot!!

  36. Tamara Hogan says:

I think the chick in “Loving Jack” looks a lot like Princess Stephanie of Monaco.

  37. Evaine says:

Dina!  Most definitely Doug McClure is who I thought of straightaway for Megan’s Mate.  If you’re showing your age, I’m showing mine!  (I loved him back in the day!)

  38. Nina Croft says:

Megan’s mate is definitely Doug Mclure (AKA Trampus out of the Virginian). Hey I’m showing my age as well!

  39. MaddBookish says:

This works well for me because I’m seeing the guy as less Brad Pitt and more of a long haired Maxwell Caulfield.

  40. MaddBookish says:

The lady on Megan’s Mate looks like a red haired Loni Anderson to me. I think it’s the nose.
