Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Cheating Wankers and Happy Endings

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO comes from Rebecca:

…I find I'm a bitch needing help! I warn you, vagueness is about to happen…

I am looking for a book I read a while back, I think it would have been
around the year 2000 or even slightly before. I got it free from a magazine,
something like Cosmo/Elle/Marie Claire (UK versions) or other women's
magazines like this that I was obsessed with back then!

Anyway… the story was set around the heroine whom at the beginning of the
book finds her boyfriend in bed with another woman (I remember in the
opening scene, as the h is leaving the corner of the duvet the cheating boyf
is using to cover his modesty gets caught in the h's car door and she drives
off with duvet still attached to her car). So, the h goes to her friends
house for much female vilifying about the cheating bum, one of her friends
suggests that they all make the most of their single status and sleep with
as many men as possible – they even create a tally chart in the kitchen.

The h doesn't really have much luck in her quest – I seem to remember a
scene where she almost gets it on with a coworker, at a staff party, on the
photocopier. The h is a sort-of travel writer for a magazine and she later
goes to a country hotel to write a review and meets a man there (I believe
he is the owner or owner's son) and they end up sleeping together after a
drunken night. She hightails it out of there the next morning, but later on
in the story, lo and behold, that same man turns out to be her newest
boss.

Things are awkward and some stuff that I can't remember happens and
eventually the book ends with them getting their HEA.

Another scene I remember that may help is – when the h goes to her old house
to collect her stuff she decides to wreak revenge on her ex, so she
punctures a hole in the bath, which is in the room directly above the living
room and the ex's precious TV, with the intention that the water will drip
down and ruin the TV. I am almost certain that it was set in the UK.

It has been driving me crazy trying to find this book, I can't even be sure
if it was any good but I want to re-read it, I even got my mother to send my
poor dad up into the attic to look through the stuff I left behind when I
moved out, to see if it was there!

I would be so grateful if you could post this to help me find it, or at
least get closure on the fact that it's a hopeless cause!

Oh, this sounds like a rather fun novel – but I swear I saw the duvet-in-the-car-door-oops-naked-cheater in a movie or trailer for a movie. Do you remember this book?

OH! I’ve read this one. I’m pretty sure it’s either a Marian Keyes book or a Katie Fforde. The name is escaping me!

  2. Freyathorn says:

That was a scene from “Inner Space”, where Meg Ryan goes off in a taxi, leaving Dennis Quaid with his backside hanging out.

  3. Tara says:

Is it Marian Keyes’ Sushi for Beginners?

  4. Holly Gault says:

Also could be a Jill Mansell, but I can’t think of which one.

    Thanks for posting my HaBO.

I really hope someone out there knows this book, my husband thinks I made it up and now I’m desperate to prove him wrong!!

    Help, please!

Portions of this sound like ‘Stately Pursuits’ by Katie Fforde. The heroine goes to her boyfriend’s summer cottage to find him in bed with another woman. She rips his heirloom sheets and he runs after her in the duvet cover, which I think she drives away with. But most of the rest of the story doesn’t mesh. Her bf WAS her boss and she lost her job, and ends up renovating the family’s country estate under the nose of the heir of the family (who is basically not related to her), and he ends up being the hero of the story.

I know this book! Yay, a first for me!

    It’s Misbehaving by Sarah Harvey

I picked it up at a hotel on the Canary Islands more than 10 years ago, and it was on my keeper shelf a long time. Now it’s having a new life as a bookcrossing book. 🙂

  8. Rebecca says:

Oh, Elianara! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

That is the one, I’m so pleased. Hoping off to order it now 🙂

Thanks Smart Bitches for the marvellous thing that is HaBO!

  9. Has ‘wankers’ made it over the pond? I thought it was a Brit word only. *proud moment for Britain*

    I’m happy I could help.

It’s a book with a lot of fun, I remember one of her friends cheating with the tally, and I remember the end being really funny, with a bit of WTF. Something about a gender bender party, couches still wrapped in bubble plastic and a lot of bad puns. Have fun!

  11. Kate4queen says:

    I love that book. 🙂

I knew this one and someone beat me to it! So annoying! I even remember getting this free with a magazine, the cover is very memoable – bright pink with lots of legs at a bar!
