Friday Videos Are Glad You’re Somebody They Know

So this is so cool, I'm not quite sure what to do with myself. Gotye, whose song “Somebody I Used to Know” had grown somewhat tiresome for me, took a pile of the remixes and performances of his song on YouTube and remixed them into one giant orchestra. IT IS MINDBLOWING. So many people being creative with his song, and he puts them all together to show how far his music has gone, and how it's become transformed. People bring creative in response to someone else's creativity gives me happydance.

Link! And you can see the full list of sources with links at Gotye's website. I think the Pentatonix performance and the Netherlands Radio Choir performance are my favorites.

I hope your weekend inspires you to be creative as much as possible.

Graceful curtsey to Slate, and a whole lotta folks on Twitter.

  2. Hmr28 says:

OMG!! I had never heard of pentatonix before this. They are amazing! Their stuff is available on spotify. Their cover of Born to be wild is hysterical. Love the motor sounds. Their Gotye version is def. one of the best.

  3. Jules says:

Um. That was amazing. How awesome that an artist is cool enough to do something like that? And how awesome for those people too!!

  4. This is so very cool! Gotye is amazing for putting this together and sharing with us.

  5. Laurel says:

The first version I ever heard of this song was the Pentatonix one! I’m not tired of it yet, but I never listen to the radio or watch MTV, VH1, whatever.

And yes to the Netherlands Radio Choir.

  6. Tamara Hogan says:

I am smiling so much right now. That was AWESOME.

  7. GhengisMom says:

“this is ridiculous! No one can play a whole guitar by themselves!”

  8. Andrea23 says:

@Laurel, the Pentatonix version was the first one I heard as well.  Love them!

  9. CarrieS says:

Is it weird that this made me cry?

  10. cleo says:

I much prefer this version, without the creepy lyrics.  Thanks for posting.

  11. DreadPirateRachel says:

Hahaha! That made me laugh so much. It’s pretty much what I said when I first started learning to play.

  12. MissAnika says:

Does anyone have a link that will let me watch the video in Germany? It makes me so mad when I click on the video and it tells me that it’s not available in my country. Because the rights to use the music weren’t given. WTF?!? Gotye has put the link on their website! What rights do I need to watch this? Ahhhhhhhh…. Stupid, stupid laws…

  13. The Pentatonix version is amazing! I love it, and I never cared too much for the original song.

  14. MissAnika says:

now I found a link that works in Germany, too:

    .
Hah, stupid laws take that! You can try and keep me from enjoying videos that other countries have no problem watching but I am smarter than that. And I have superior googling skills!
And for those of you who need a link for the call me maybe chatroulette video, that doesn’t work in German either, try: http://youtu.be/u6CXMwuPbYM

  15. Thanks so much for sharing this. I’m closing out the week watching some of the videos that were chosen for the mash-ups and I’m bursting with happydance too.

  16. Thank you so much for this. I have obviously been living under a rock and didn’t know about it. I found all the different versions really moving – amazing that this song has inspired so many people. Great lyrics, Gotye.
