Links: Romance in the Washington Post, Comic Sins, and Someone is Thrilled

The Washington Post has published their summer reading section (or will this weekend) (I don't actually see the WaPo as I live in NeJe). This year they decided to feature a round up of summer romance reading, and they asked me to write it -hot diggity!

Let me tell you. I HAD A WORD LIMIT. Out here in the hinterlands of the internets? NO WORD LIMIT. For WaPo? Word limit! I had a word limit and I wanted to mention as many great summer reads as possible, while also featuring books of several different lengths. I was trying so hard to fit one more book in that column; I was about ready to end with “BOOK. GOOD. READ.” But alas, word limits, they are mighty things – and so is being edited. I've never been so terse in my life.

But I'm so, so pleased that WaPo is featuring romance in their summer reading section – woohoo!

More links in bullet points! PEW PEW!

  • BEA is going on, and if you want to know all the business, head on over to Dear Author, as Jane is wandering the Javits center and finding out pretty much everything.

  • Bryn sent me this link that cracked me up: at some point, there was a search-and-replace, and poor Tolstoy ended up nookd. Not even kidding (HA!).

  • JL Wilson sent me this link to a series of romance comics captioned by James Lileks as part of his Comic Sins collection.

(Comic Sins is the best name for a website, honestly).

The romance collection is totally snort liquid material. Be Ye Warned. I think this might be my favorite part:

You can tell she's old because her hair is short. Non-threatening female guidance figures always had the short hair. Long hair? Friends.
    Or Deadly Rivals. It depended.

Or then there's the part where sleeves have been removed to make an ascot. I about stopped breathing easily from the laughter at that point.

  • Amazon has acquired the publication rights from Avalon Books for more than 3000 backlist novels, including romances from Carolyn Brown, .

And, as usual, the press release featured the use of the word “thrilled.” I don't think you're allowed to do a positive press release in publishing without using the word “thrilled.” It's the law.

Great choices for the summer reading list, Sarah!

  2. Over here losing it at the Lileks link. Especially “Steve! I – uh – she means nothing to me! Nothing!” Bwahahahaha. XD

And dammit, I have to go to work. Must tear myself away from link!

Is it just me or does it look like that cheerleaders has the herpes on her face?  I think that eruption explains her hands on hips yr gonna get it mister body language.  It also explains his grin.

Those comic captions were hilarious.  Malt Shop of Destiny made me snort audibly.

I love the “Comic Sins” collection.  It’s amazing to think that those were once considered a feasible take on the romance genre…

  5. Carrie Gwaltney says:

I noticed the WaPo truncated your site to “trashybooks, com.” Very PC. 😉

  6. Awesome with the WaPo!  Um…Comic Sins.  There’s just so much fun we can have with that.

That Comic Sins site is fantastic.
“You wonder why she was alone; she’s pretty hot. Unless guys were put off by her habit of carrying a bedpost around all the time. You must be this size to ride this ride, perhaps.”

I have to admit that the phrase “summer reading” always catches me mildly off guard. How about those of us who read genre fiction all year long?!

Word limits bite! (And in some cases, cramps ones style) But those were great suggestions! Yeah, I noticed they shortened it to Trashybooks.com as well. Comic Sins is a time suck. I could sit there for awhile and read those. lol I clicked to the comic Heart Throbs.. which resembles the plot of Pearl Harbor if you take out the baby and add airplanes.

Ha! I emailed your summer reading list to my romance friends from the Post without noting that you had wrote it! I wondered why it so spot on, seeing how the Post (my local paper) very rarely talks about the romance genre at all. Awesome job!

  12. Deb G. says:

typing too early! should be that I emailed the Post list to my friends, because I don’t have friends FROM (at?) the Post.

Imagine my delight upon discovering two of my favorite sites have come together in one glorious moment! Lileks and SBTB – why, its like chocolate and peanut butter! Or lemon and lime!  Or alphole heroes and TSTL heroines!  I may swoon.

  14. Susan/DC says:

Only after reading the romance recommendations in the Post and wondering why there was no snark did I look at the writer’s name and behold, it was the amazing Sarah from SBTB.  Thank you for introducing the readers of the Post to some wonderful authors; I only hope they are adventuresome enough to actually read your recommendations (I have and enjoyed them very much).
