Whatcha Reading?

Time to get all nosy up in your reading list – what are you reading this weekend?

I'm reading several books at once, which is NOT good for my brain, especially when I mix genres, but I started too many things that I like. I have one book on the phone, one on the coffee table, one on my Kindle – it's getting messy. But Pig was right – Liz Fielding's Tempted by Trouble [Goodreads | Amazon | BN | HQN] is really adorable. Plus, Tessa Dare's A Week to be Wicked [Goodreads | Amazon | BN] has been pushing all the happy-joy-joy buttons in my brain, too, and I'm trying to savor that book as well. That's not working as well as I'd planned.

So what books are pushing the happy-joy buttons in your brain this week? What books are you looking forward to reading this weekend? Share, share!

Lover Mine by J.R. Ward. I’m working my way through the series right now.

  2. Mirandaflynn says:

Magistrates of Hell by Barbara Hambly. This is her new vampire book and is awesome as usual.

    Miranda

  3. Carolyn says:

Oh, I didn’t know she had a new one out. I’m off to find it.  🙂

I haven’t been reading much of anything lately – deadlines and galleys.  🙁

  4. Artemiz says:

At the moment I’m reading Fair Game by Patricia Briggs (problably will finish it tonight) at home and Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger on my way to wokr and on lunch brake.
For a weekend I can’t decide whether to choose 50 shades of Grey by E.L. James or Infamous by Sherrilyn Kenyon 🙂 not the easyest decision to make 🙂 Last weekend was easy – then it was all about Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward.

  5. TrishJ says:

Just started Home Sweet Home by Bells Riley.  Also have the next one in the series.

  6. Kristi says:

Slammed by Colleen Hoover. Already cried buckets and giggle snorted.

  7. Karin says:

I’m reading “When Maidens Mourn” by C.S. Harris and “Imperial Scandal” by Teresa Grant at the same time. They take place around the same time, so I like to imagine the characters in the 2 books meeting each other.

  8. LeslieCB says:

Game of Thrones (with the boyfriend, so it is taking forever to finish), and I just started Only with you Love by Lisa Kleypas…I’ve never read it, but it is a little crazy so far.

  9. Amandag_18 says:

Shayala Black’s doomsday series – who knew the closest story I’d find to Harry potter would be in the romance genre? Years I’ve been looking!

  10. TLo says:

At Your Pleasure by Meredith Duran.  Slow burn read thus far; historical context plays a big role and Duran’s writing is always gorgeous.

  11. Alex says:

Oh I was incapable of savouring A Week To Be Wicked.  It was so good that I zoomed through it in an evening, read the excerpt from the next book and went “WAAAAAAAHHH!  Why isn’t it September already??” And I don’t even like historical romances very much, so that tells you quite how good a book it is.

I may reread Sheltered by Charlotte Stein because it knocked my socks off.  Such an amazing combination of sweetness and ultra sexiness.

  12. Carin says:

I am re-reading Never Enough by Lauren Dane. SO good.  Yesterday I started listening to the audio of Celebrity In Death by JD Robb.  I’m one disk in and have laughed so many times. It’s like visiting old friends, and I love it.

I’m waiting for Fair Game and Lover Reborn from the library, and it’s nice to hear they will be good!

  13. Kellyn0812 says:

I just finished Fair Game ( very) late last night. loved it!

  14. Lazie1 says:

I wasted my last Sunday by reading Born to Darkness by Suzanne Brockmann.  It was the first book that I actually disliked enough to go to Goodreads and review.  Usually I can’t do it because I know that reading preferance is subjective, but I WAITED for that book to come out, and the entire time I was reading it I was thinking “This is horrible, put it down and do something else.”  Then, because I thought it had to get better I kept reading it.  It didn’t.

So this weekend I am going to go to the reviews, and pick the fourth book in the B ratings, and if I haven’t read it go and buy it.

  15. Hollyg238 says:

Heading on Vacation – for the drive – Julia Spencer-Fieldings “In a Bleak Midwinter” and once I get there…Lauren Dane’s – De La Vega’s Series – Book 2 and was just notified that Suzanne Brockmann’s “Born to Darkness” is waiting at the Library for me….a fun weekend.

  16. Abby says:

I’m re-reading Lisa Kleypas’ Suddenly You.  I forgot how much I love it!

  17. TinaDee says:

I just got Killing Rites, by MLN Hanover from Amazon.  Book 4 in The Black Sun’s Daughter series.

  18. Hannah E. says:

I just finished listening to No Rest For the Wicked by Kresley Cole on audio.  Robert Petkoff is a fantastic reader, and I’m trying to force myself to wait for each audiobook in the IAD series instead of rushing through it in print.

(By the way, I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but in both Beyond Heaving Bosoms and EIKAL, No Rest For the Wicked is mistakenly referenced by the title of the previous book, A Hunger Like No Other.  As you’ve pointed out, the titles in this series are insanely difficult to keep straight.)

I’m currently reading Captured by Beverly Jenkins for my book club, and I’m disappointed by the simplistic writing style and complete lack of complexity of the characters or plot.  Take away the sex, and I’d think it was written for pre-teen readers.  Of course, without the sex, it would be a lot less amusing.  At one point the heroine’s breasts are “whispering [the hero’s] name” and later her nipples are “pleading” with him.  Jenkins is also a master of hilarious mixed metaphors.

  19. kkw says:

Just finished Dead Witch Walking, unsure why i thought it would be worth reading, or why I kept reading it, but thank god it’s finally over.  Going to read Danger of Desire for the Rita Reader Challenge next.  Seriously considering reading multiple translations of Onegin, but will probably be too lazy, and ballet season isn’t for a while yet.  Maybe someone at the antiquarian book fair will give me a treat today, but those books aren’t for reading, they’re for surreptitiously sniffing.  Oh, come one.  Who doesn’t like the way books smell?  And yet people give you that look when you go around smelling books.  Jealousy, that’s what it is.

  20. Renee Beaver says:

As am new to the romance genre (well, not all that new as I have been reading Jane Austen and the Brontes forever but didn’t have the sense the recognize their books as romance), I have embarked on a journey of self-education through the romance recommendations of SB Sarah. In the past week I have read (1) Tallk Me Down by Victoria Dahl; (2) Week to be Wicked by Tessa Dare; and (3) Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase.  Next up:  Indigo by Beverly Jenkins!

  21. Rij says:

I’m alternating between Fingersmith by Sarah Waters in print and Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner on kindle and loving them both. There’s an Agatha Christie mystery, I forget which one, in the car waiting to be listened to tomorrow when I’ll be driving for five hours.

  22. Jcode says:

I am reading “The Bro-Romance” and giggling quite a lot.  Barn Opera.  Too funny.  Next up is The Starving Years by Jordan Castillo Price, and I think I’m also ready for my next J.R. Ward (Rehv’s book).  I am a latecomer to this series and find I have to leave BIG gaps between books.  I also have Stephanie Doyle’s “The Way Back” and Janice Kay Johnson’s “The Call of Bravery” waiting.  I tend to put off the Janice Kay Johnson ones because I love them so much that I want to savour them and once I’m finished I get impatient because I need her to write faster!

  23. velocireader says:

I bought a “Bujold Pack” in Fictionwise, after some confusing research on the usual “what order to read them in” question. Decided the hell with it, and enjoyed a bunch of Lois McMaster Bujold, including The Curse of Chalion, which I found free or cheap somewhere. Kinda read historical fiction/romance Golden Surrender by Heather Graham. You know it’s bad when halfway through a book, you start skipping any dialog between the hero and the heroine. And I like a handsome virile Viking as much as any woman, but I really think I can hold the picture in my head without a new description of his golden awesomeness in every chapter. Now reading Carved in Bone by Jefferson Bass – nice forensic mystery novel where most of the interesting characters are dead, which is a relief.

  24. Sugarless says:

I’m reading Black Hawk by Joanna Bourne.

  25. Patsy says:

I couldn’t savor “” Week to Be Wicked” either. I read it as soon as it hit my kindle at midnight, then have read it over for the past week, on my phone, while waiting for the eL. I also just finished Eugenides’ “The Marriage Plot,” and am working my way through Marilynne Robinson’s new anthology.

  26. Tamara Hogan says:

I just finished “Sisterhood of Dune” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Despite the title, there was a huge cast of non-Bene Gesserit characters in the book. Not nearly enough Sisterhood for my taste. This weekend, it’s “Wave of Memories,” a new Sons of the Zodiac novella from Addison Fox.

  27. LG says:

I’m still reading some of the same things I was reading last month: the first Gosick light novel, and a collection of H.P. Lovecraft’s works. The Gosick novel is either a crappy translation, or not exactly the best writing ever – the anime is so much better. I’m still liking the H.P. Lovecraft collection, although I may need to delete the e-book file from my reader and somehow break it up into chunks and re-add it, because I think the size (1400+ pages) is making my Nook freak out.

I needed a break from Lovecraft’s weirdness and Gosick’s clunky writing, so I recently read and finished Doctor’s Delight by Angela Verdenius. Those looking for contemporary romance featuring a plus-sized heroine might want to try this or one of the other books in the trilogy (Big Lovin’ – horrible series title, but I guess it gets the point across). I don’t know that I’d personally recommend this one – I kind of wish I had read the first book, starring Tim the Veterinarian, instead. Doctor’s Delight stars Cherry, a nurse and 35-year-old virgin, and Rick, a hottie doctor. I liked Cherry, but Rick was a stalker-ish conceited jerk.

  28. Rae says:

Eden Burning by Elizabeth Lowell….I forgot what a jerk he is in the beginning.

  29. Helena Sapphire says:

About That Night By Julie James.

  30. PamG says:

The Sun Also Rises in the staff restroom.  I expect that to take awhile, but, hell, it’s a classic and won’t go OP.  I finished An Affair with Mr. Kennedy and was very disappointed.  Still it helped me pinpoint the quality that bugs me about some historical novels; if you can dress your characters in jeans and/or designer fashion and their behavior/dialogue/moral code stays the same, I’m not going to care for it.  Also read Stephanie Laurens’ Devil’s Bride which was o.k., but weirdly paced.  Also Jane Haddam’s Blood in the water: good but not her best.  Currently reading Memory of Blood by Christopher Fowler.  I love the Peculiar Crimes Unit, but it saddens me that authors go all Doyle-ish and come to hate their creations.

I’m jumping all over the place here, but I really need to pick up something completely fantastic….

  31. PamG says:

Regarding Harrison’s Hollows series: got better….

  32. harthad says:

Renee and I are in the same boat! I too have been slowly introducing myself to the best of the romance genre via the recommendations of the Smart Bitches. Last week I finished Flowers from the Storm, because it was praised so highly here; couldn’t put it down, and now I keep re-reading parts of it. I’ve been hesitating between Week to Be Wicked and The Raven Prince next, but I think I may have to go wicked…

  33. I’m hoping to finish The Tell-Tale Art: Poe in Modern Popular Culture today. I know I’m going to get distracted from whatever I start next by an influx of new books Sunday. (The one good thing about getting older, free books! 😉 )

  34. Darlynne says:

Finished Fair Game last night and now I have to choose between Born to Darkness and Beth Revis’s A Million Suns, the second book after Across the Universe, which I loved. Decisions, decisions …

  35. Renee Beaver says:

Flowers from the Storm is on my list as well—based on your recommendation, I may queue it up right after Indigo.  I think “wicked” is the way to go—I read it in a crazy 8 hour stretch earlier this week— it was REALLY good!

  36. Taylor Reynolds says:

I started A Week to be Wicked last night and adore it so far. I’ve got lots of overtime to work this weekend, so it may actually take me through Sunday gobble it down. I haven’t read Tessa Dare before, so she’s going on the “buy” list.

  37. Ren says:

I’m reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas because someone on Goodreads said it was “Juvenile and disgusting!”, which, historically speaking, translates to “thing that will fill Ren with the happies.”

I’m about ready to give up on Eternity Road, which is perhaps the dumbest post-apocalyptic scenario I’ve ever read. I love a good end of the world. This is not that.

  38. Karenmc says:

The only book I read this week was Patricia Highsmith’s (aka Claire Morgan) The Price of Salt. I believe I heard about it at DA. Anyway, it was a real change of pace from my normal historicals, and I liked it. Next will be another historical, but there are so many in the TBR pile that I don’t know which one I’ll pick up.

  39. Danielle TBQ says:

Let’s see… I just finished up “Demon Seed” by Jianne Carlo last night. It was sexy—and a pretty good read. I just wish I had read books 1-3 first. 🙂 I’ll definitely be putting the rest of her books on my list.

Now I’m moving on to a YA books I received from NetGalley (only a week left to read it…oops), “Grave Mercy’ by Robin LaFevers. If my NOOK will work with me—-it keeps freezing on this file… I haven’t even got more than a few pages in, so I can’t tell you if it’s good, bad, or indifferent.

After that? Next on my list is “North of Heartbreak” by Julie Rowe. Another one to be reviewed as part of a blog tour.

My poor TBR mountain is seriously about to collapse on me though…. I have a problem. Really, I do. 😀

    Enjoy!

  40. Jody Wallace says:

Wreck of the Nebula Dream by Veronica Scott and How to Crochet an Assyrian War Helmet by Yarny Genuis. (Note: second item is nonfiction heheh)
