Friday Videos Love All the Tropes

This week's Friday Video is a classic, sent by Aziza, and how I missed seeing this, I have no idea. I love The Avengers, and have watched most of them. Emma Peel is amazing in so many respects.

As Aziza explained in her email, “John Steed and Emma Peel celebrate/demonstrate trope and formula…and look good doing so.”

Yes, yes, they do.

Hope your weekend is full of style, rapier wit, fine vintages, and excellent chemistry!

The knitting at the end makes me a happy happy camper.

  2. Lynne Connolly says:

OMG, ABC Network! Man in a Suitcase, Danger Man, The Baron… but from that era, the one for me, next to the Avengers, of course, is The Man from UNCLE. Strange how Ilya Kuryakin looks like that bloke in NCIS, isn’t it?
Right now we have Hustle in that vein, but precious little else. Bring back Emma Peel!

  3. Princess of Dork says:

Excellent Friday clip! Put me in an excellent mood for fencing (verbal).

  4. Jim L says:

It’s always fun when people working in a genre know of the ridiculous elements/cliches/tropes of their genre and can have fun with them, rather than take themselves too seriously.

  5. Kim says:

What a fun show. I haven’t seen this show in years.

  6. Joannef425 says:

Emma Peel was my hero(ine) growing up.  She got to do all the cool stuff, like beating up the bad guys!

  7. Wylykat says:

    Lynne,

David McCallum aka Duckie on NCIS did play Ilya Kuryakin.

Wish I could age as well as he has.

  8. Karen H says:

Emma Peel was my hero but it wasn’t all about her “beating up the bad guys” (thought that was totally cool).  I loved, loved, loved the 60s styles she wore and wanted to have every single outfit (well, except for the black leather that was too racy for the teenage girl I was). And I adored the witty repartee between her and Steed (even though he was too old in my book). I was sad when her husband returned since it was when she left the show, though glad for her as well. While I continued to watch the show, the Emma Peel substitutes just weren’t as good. And the less said about the movie remake, the better!

I, too, had a very big crush on Ilya Kuryakin, even though he was a blond! Napoleon Solo was so bland next to him.

    Wylykat,
I think Lynn is referring to the time that Kaitlyn asks what Duckie looked like as a young man, Gibbs says “like Ilya Kuryakin”.

I am watching NCIS in order, so I have something to look at while I knit. I have only hit season 4.

  10. Karenmc says:

The first show I watched with the Netflix iPad app was The Avengers. Nuff said.

  11. I remember reading interviews with the actor who played Steed and the actress who played Peel, and their answers to the question “Were Steed and Peel lovers or did they just flirt outrageously?”

HER: I think they were just good friends who felt very comfortable with one another and could joke and have fun.
HIM: I’m pretty sure they were doing it every time the camera was off them.

I submit that this is the secret to why their onscreen chemistry is so ambiguously entertaining to watch.

  12. lisa says:

David McAllum plays both Ilya and Ducky (the bloke in NCIS), which is why they look alike 😀

  13. lisa says:

Which is what several people have already said *headdesk*

  14. PamG says:

No one did witty repartee like Emma Peel and John Steed; they were perfect foils for one another. (nyuk nyuk nyuk)  I also had a thing for Ilya Kuryakin, but it was nothing compared to my crush on Patrick McGoohan.  Secret Agent.  The Prisoner.  Ahhhhhh

Hell, I might as well admit it: Thomasina.
