I'm trying to remember the title of a romance novel I read.
It was set during the Regency period, like most of the romances I read. The
heroine, I believe, was a widow with a young son; the hero was an It's
Complicated with a daughter.The Complicated part came in whereupon his wife was a fairy. On the birth of
the daughter, she was forced to return to her own realm. Since then she has
been scheming for her daughter to take her place, so she can resume her
whatevers in the mortal world. I don't remember what it was.
There may or may not have been a dog, but the widow was mentioned to have
once been at the height of fashion, and still wearing those same clothes
some few years since they had gone out of fashion. I think there may also
have been a tower tour. And the widow could see the magic stuff? Or sense
it, or something.
That's a really curious book – anyone remember this one?
All this brings to mind is Susan Krinard “Lord of the Forest” and subsequent “Lord” books, but no, not really.
I’m no help but if anyone figures it out then I want to read it.

It sounds like something by Susanna Clark, except that I don’t know if she’s written novels except for Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell. There’s a collection of the stories The Ladies of Grace Adieu.
Something about the description reminded me of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, too, although I’d hardly consider that a romance. There’s romantic elements, and I loved the book, but it’s way more weird Regency fantasy than anything else.
Could it possibly be “Second Thoughts” by Sandra Heath? Here’s the description:

The title of your HaBO request is a bit misleading, I think. Isn’t it the poor widow that wears outdated clothes, not the fairy mom?
The Sandra Heath book seems to have Arthurian elements and the heroine encounters a talking cockatoo and a leopard as well as lavender lights. Does that sound familiar?

FYI, paperback swap (where I found the description) is a good place to go when stumped. I’ve found a few items that I just could NOT find anywhere else by using a specific keyword search in pb swap. Highly recommend them.
