Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Mom was a Fairy with Outdated Clothes

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

Dark Puck is looking for a historical paranormal that sounds really interesting!

I'm trying to remember the title of a romance novel I read.

It was set during the Regency period, like most of the romances I read. The
heroine, I believe, was a widow with a young son; the hero was an It's
Complicated with a daughter.

The Complicated part came in whereupon his wife was a fairy. On the birth of
the daughter, she was forced to return to her own realm. Since then she has
been scheming for her daughter to take her place, so she can resume her
whatevers in the mortal world. I don't remember what it was.

There may or may not have been a dog, but the widow was mentioned to have
once been at the height of fashion, and still wearing those same clothes
some few years since they had gone out of fashion. I think there may also
have been a tower tour. And the widow could see the magic stuff? Or sense
it, or something.

That's a really curious book – anyone remember this one?

  1. Donna says:

All this brings to mind is Susan Krinard “Lord of the Forest” and subsequent “Lord” books, but no, not really.

  2. Liz B says:

I’m no help but if anyone figures it out then I want to read it.

  3. Olivia Waite says:

My first instinct was Laura Kinsale, but it’s not one of hers. Sounds fantastic, thought!

  4. Lynda says:

I want to read it too.

  5. Elli says:

It sounds like something by Susanna Clark, except that I don’t know if she’s written novels except for Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell.  There’s a collection of the stories The Ladies of Grace Adieu.

  6. Lisa says:

Something about the description reminded me of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, too, although I’d hardly consider that a romance. There’s romantic elements, and I loved the book, but it’s way more weird Regency fantasy than anything else.

  7. Chloemonster says:

Could it possibly be “Second Thoughts” by Sandra Heath?  Here’s the description:
Love Spell — Although Lord Carismont is dashing enough to take any girl of the ton for his wife, the widower has only his daughter’s best interests at heart. When Carismont interviews Kate Kingsley for the position of governess, he believes he’s discovered a suitable mother for his little girl and readily offers Kate more than she ever expected: a marriage of convenience.

A charming young widow with a son to care for, Kate hesitantly accepts Carismont’s proposal and all the security that comes with it. But when she arrives at his castle off the coast of England and learns that someone—or something—is determined to keep them apart, she begins to have second thoughts about their union that only the magic of true love can put to rest

When I read this yesterday, my first thought was Jill Barnett, but I don’t think that’s right.  Hope someone knows this one.

  9. Anon says:

The title of your HaBO request is a bit misleading, I think.  Isn’t it the poor widow that wears outdated clothes, not the fairy mom?

  10. Anon says:

The Sandra Heath book seems to have Arthurian elements and the heroine encounters a talking cockatoo and a leopard as well as lavender lights.  Does that sound familiar?

  11. Dark Puck says:

That sounds like the one! Checking with Amazon.

  12. Dark Puck says:

Having checked with Amazon, that was indeed the romance! It’s now setting comfortably on my Kindle. Thank you very much!

  13. Chloemonster says:

FYI, paperback swap (where I found the description) is a good place to go when stumped.  I’ve found a few items that I just could NOT find anywhere else by using a specific keyword search in pb swap.  Highly recommend them.

  14. Em says:

I’m actually reading this one right now too.

  15. Olivia Waite says:

Thanks, Chloemonster, for both the find and the tip!

  16. looking forward for more articles on your blog Cool to read, worth learning! Keep it up!

  17. Oh yeah, and get well, Sarah.
