Friday Videos Give High Fives to Queensland

Seriously.

This video is so beautiful and it will likely make you cry.

Link!

This week, the Parliament of Queensland, Australia, voted in favor of legalizing same sex civil unions, joining Tasmania as two states in Oz allowing gay unions. I find this particularly poignant as I found this video just before I learned the news that Queensland's parliament was voting on the issue. Mazel tov, Queensland, and cheers to many, many happily ever afters for everyone who wants one.

The Australian Labor Party is having their national conference this weekend where the issue of marriage equality will be debated. A major shit fight! Could become ALP policy. Our PM is against marriage equality but she could get rolled.

  2. Tina Chaney says:

I saw this video earlier this week when Dan Savage posted it.  It’s just as beautiful the second time around.  Way to go, Queensland!  I only hope that, some day, the idea of not allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry will be considered with the same appalled horror that we have when we remember that there used to be laws against interracial marriage.

  3. Shawnyj says:

Yup. Made me cry. I had to watch the backhoe video again just to put myself together again. Thanks though, a truly beautiful and thought provoking piece.

  4. Jen G. says:

    Saw this yesterday.  Love this.

  5. SB Sarah says:

Agreed, Tina. My sons go to school with kids who have two moms, two dads, one mom, one dad, one of each, two of each with steps and siblings, and it makes no difference to them.

I think my kids will someday look at the gay marriage debate and go “WTF?” the way I look at a lunch counter and wonder why only white people could eat there.

  6. Amberly Smith says:

“cheers to many, many happily ever afters for everyone who wants one.” I love that you shared this video, beyond how awesome it is, your inclusion of the video rocks!

  7. I found that video earlier this week, loved it, linked to it, and now hearing that Queensland voted in favor of marriage for all is the icing on the cake.  Good for you, Oz!

  8. azteclady says:

    Yup, did make me cry.

Thank you—and cheers for every step of ground gained in the fight for equality for every human being on the planet.

  9. Theresa Meyers says:

Love knows no boundaries. No race. No gender. No age. It simply is. Why is this so hard for people to grasp?

  10. CK says:

GAh!! Awesome. Totally made me cry.

  11. MissB2U says:

It makes me so happy for them and reinforces my shame that my home state, the supposedly “Golden State” here on the left coast enshrined discrimination in our constitution.

  12. Erica says:

That did make me cry. In a good way. Hurray Queensland!

  13. Gemma says:

Lovely video. I’ve read plenty of gay romance over the years and I feel it’s surely time for gay marriage to come into its own.

I was wondering when Mills & Boon / Harlequin are going to launch a lesbi-gay imprint. I don’t suppose they are going to any time soon, but for me it would be a real watershed moment to see the Mills & Boon Man-Man Love on the shelves next to the Mills & Boon Historicals. (Couldn’t think of a good lesbian or gay series name off the top of my head.)

Don’t you like even-numbered comments? (Good luck fighting the gremilins in your new design!)

  14. Chantal H says:

I cried. Beautiful video. Beautiful men in the video 😉

  15. Sarah!  Thanks so much for sharing that video.  So beautiful.  Love really is beautiful, no matter what the shape or size.  *blinking away the tears*  Hooray for Queensland and getting accomplished what my state in the U.S. could not manage to do.

  16. Merrian says:

The Federal Labor Party has voted to change their party platform in favour of same-sex marriage. It was carried on the voices. This means a conscience vote in Parliament when a bill is proposed.

  17. Katrinafee says:

I cried. Get Up does fabulous videos.

  18. Kaetrin says:

    It’s such a great video.
The ALP voted to change their platform but because they also voted for a conscience vote, as I understand it, it’s unlikely the changes will pass in Parliament. I hope I’m wrong on that.

  19. Merrian says:

Too pass it would require the Opposition to release party discipline and allow a conscience vote on their side too. I am mad at the Prime Minister Julia Gillard because I think this should have been part of the platform and with all party members required to vote in support. Her weird, both sides of the fence, don’t scare the punters opportunism around this issue has undermined the possibilities for change.

  20. Sharry night says:

This is Fantastic! I support this organization who made this video! We are having a major policy shift in oz. Fingers crossed gay marriage will be legalized here, nationally. There is major public support for it just have to get the poloiticansto support it. Videos like this goa longwayin galvnisingthe support.

  21. Katie Topping says:

Makes me even more proud to be an adopted Queenslander.  Its unusual for the Sunshine State to be ahead of the rest of Australia, so I am really happy that this was passed. I just wish that the remaining states and territories will go the same way soon – it certainly makes a joke of being and hour and 20 years behind New South Wales, as I have heard for the last five years from my Sydney-residing friends.  If Queensland thinks it’s time for a change, then it must be (and is) seriously overdue.

  22. Sharrynight says:

    One thing at a time i suppose…..
