So, what did you read this weekend? Me, I read code. And email. A lot of email! I am ready for romance novels!
I read The Shop of Shades and Secrets by Colleen Gleason (an Amazon freebie) and enjoyed it.
Then I discovered I owned Animal Attraction by Jill Shalvis, so I reread Animal Magnetism first. I’m hoping Jade and Dell will be able to control themselves better than the couple in the first book, lol.
I read SEALed with A Promise – sequel to SEALed with a Kiss – and I enjoyed it. And I’m almost done re-reading Anne of Avonlea – not all childhood favorites stand up to re-reads as an adult reader (I’m looking at you Little Women) but this one is still good. And I bought Hot as Hades, but I haven’t read it yet.
I just finished An Echo in the Bone (the seventh outlander) by Diana Gabaldon. I really enjoyed it, but it was much more cliffhanger-y than any of the others which is particularly annoying as there is no next one yet (I just read all of them in a row for the first time (and liked them so very much) so I didn’t have to wait very long between each, just a little bit of palate cleansing before I got hold of the next one). Now I want more!
I just started Cryoburn, the new Vorkosigan book by Bujold which I’ve been waiting for forever, and it’s making me very happy! (I just might have to go back and reread a bunch of them now for the umpteenth time) It may not be quite as good as some of the others, and it took me maybe 20 pages to get sucked in, but now I’m having a very hard time getting anything else done (and there are things I HAVE TO do today before I can get back to it) and to be fair I was very tired when I started it so that might explain the delay of getting hooked in. Also it’s more Miles, so what could be bad?
I’m trying to finish Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, but it is slow going. I read a book on Kindle that I promised someone I would read but I had to skim. I caught up on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Tribs.

I read Meljean Brook’s followup book to The Iron Duke called Heart of Steel. Different and less angst-y but I enjoyed it. I never thought I’d like steampunk but the romance in the Iron Duke was fantastic. Hope she continues to write in this world.
I read some Victoria Dahl that I enjoyed, I read The Bride and found it meh, I read some Gena Showalter that I somehow didn’t realize was YA which is not my thing but not as disappointing as I would have guessed, and I read an Erin McCarthy book that I *hated* which is not normal for me. Am I the only the one that found the heroine of Slow Ride an unspeakable…no seriously just unspeakable, because I don’t want to type any of the words I have for her. Just not OK. I’m working on blocking it from my memory.
Based on all the sighing over Barrons, I started reading Darkfever, and it’s a real struggle to keep going. I’m over 3/4 of the way through and Mac is killing me with the never-ending details about her clothes, the color of her nailpolish, and her fabulous hair and body. She’s cute. I get it. Stop telling me every three pages. I also feel like the author is constantly shoehorning in beauty tips to her readers. Why must I read about the importance of moisturizing facial skin in a book about death and destruction? I have cheesy magazines for that. I suppose I’ll try the next one in the series, but I’m not chomping at the bit.
@ kkw – The Chase (the book before Slow Ride) made me so angry that I didn’t bother with Slow Ride, which isn’t really normal for me. Sorry Slow Ride was so bad for you. Kind of think it got a luke warm review and many neg comments on Dear Author, but I don’t remember the details.
And I finished Hot as Hades – it’s a fun, fast read.
@cleo I don’t read McCarthy’s stuff religiously, but I’d always liked what I read, which has not included The Chase, and now probably won’t. Such a shame, what do you suppose happened? Cause it’s not my imagination, she has some really fun books, right?
@kkw – I don’t know what happened. She was never an auto-buy for me, but I used to consider her pretty reliable for light-hearted but hot books. I really love her short stories – especially in the Bad Boys series (Bad Boys Online, Bad Boys of Summer, etc). The Fast Track series started out ok, but each book got steadily worse imo – I stopped with #3 – The Chase.
I read Elizabeth Vaughn’s “Warsworn” and “Warlord” to finish the trilogy that started with “Warprize”. I really enjoyed this series.
I’m going to have to give the new smartphone Kindle app a whirl and try something!
I’ve been reading Jeaniene Frost’s series and some of them are better than others. However, her spin-offs are even better.
It would be awesome if you could provide a link to your reviews alongside the links to retailers (where available, of course). ‘Cause some of us are lazy and can’t even keep up with reading the blog.
