The Gayle King Show: More Makeup Than I’ve Ever Worn, Ever

There’s a 1:10 clip of my segment from The Gayle King Show online already! Have a look:

More information than you probably wanted:

I think the romance fans are everywhere, really. Today, at the Gayle King studios, I had the best conversation with the makeup lady about all the books she likes to read.

I was supposed to arrive camera ready, but I clearly did not apply enough makeup, because I was touched up to a truly amazing degree. And because I’m nosy I asked her all kinds of questions about her job, what cosmetics she likes, and what she recommends. I was so nervous, I cannot for the life of me remember her name. I feel like a tool about that.

The highlights of our conversation:

– She loves Laura Mercier and Shu Uemura, among others.

– In terms of wearing makeup, which I am not terribly knowledgeable about, she says the most important to thing is to hydrate your skin inside and out. Drink water and use moisturizing cream or even oils on your face.

– She really enjoys YA romance (you knew I’d ask her about what she likes to read) and was very curious about Jennifer Estep’s Mythos series when I told her about it, and also about the Immortals After Dark series, the House of Night series, and the Vampire Academy series. We talked about books a LOT.

The actual on camera interview went by in a whoosh. I barely remembered any of it until I watched it on my DVR some hours later. I tried to focus on the person in front of me (Ms. King) and on the fact that the camera people were laughing in the right places (yay).

I was also wearing an earpiece so I could hear the people in the control booth, and it was like having people talking right behind me. When they first put it on me, I kept looking over my shoulder to see who was standing there. I was worried that during the show I’d hear, “Sarah, you are having a wardrobe malfunction. Duck and cover. Or something.”

A lot of folks on Twitter asked about my necklace – I promised to post a link to the artist and where you can buy one like it.

It’s really reasonably priced for something so original – and comfortable. I found that necklace at the Razzle Dazzle shop on Royal Street in New Orleans during Heather Graham’s Writers for New Orleans conference last month.

It’s part of the “Kristina Collection” by designer Hana Stepanek, and it’s a memory wire that hangs around my neck (no clasp!) with big glowy pieces of glass. There’s black, gold and silver wire necklaces, and earrings, too. You can see more of the options online at this shop, including earring and necklace sets. There’s also a Facebook note with more information from a store called Sparkle! But it looks like it might be a little hard to find.

And the shoes attracted some comments, too. (My sister: “I’m sure you are saying some words but YOUR SHOES OMG!”) Everything I was wearing was from Kohls. The Goddess of Kohls was with me. Sometimes the Goddess is elsewhere and they have nothing in my size, but this trip, the Goddess of Kohls was with me, because I found the whole outfit, including shoes, plus stuff for everyone else in the house on sale. These are the shoes, and at my local store, they were on huge discount.

Thank you to all of those who tuned in to watch, and for your kind comments and kudos on Twitter and Facebook. That was so awesome – I was a lot less nervous knowing you guys were watching.
