From Claire comes this awesome photograph of The Ladies in Paris!
While adventuring around Paris I found this shirt in a shop window and knew I had to send you a picture. I completely blanked and didn’t get the name of the store it was in (so sorry) but I do remember it was somewhere north of Notre Dame.
So somewhere above the cathedral, the Ladies hang out in a Paris store window. HAVE A LOOK AT THAT!
Seriously, if I had seen that, I would have walked straight into the glass in shock. HOW AWESOME.
Have I ever shared the origin of The Ladies? The Ladies are a 1940’s vintage eyeglasses advertisement illustration. Candy found them when she did the original design of the site (I bought the domain, and she did the first design, which is why the first banner read “Smart Bitches who read Trashy Novels” – oops) and we bought a license to use the image from the museum that had created the original high-resolution scan. The illustrators back then were never tracked or credited, so we have no idea who created the image, but whoever it was, s/he was excellent.
And The Ladies look spiffy on a shirt, too!

But if they are using it and selling it and you own the rights, shouldn’t you be making something off it????
The photo shows enough of the label to track down the t-shirt. It’s by someone called Rabbit Jelly. Googling finds this t-shirt (also sleeveless t-shirt) available to buy online (aimed at the UK market at least).

I am still clinging to the myth that the Ladies are really Sarah and Candy in eyeglasses and retro clothes. DO NOT DENY THE MYTH.
@ev I’d be amazed if the Bitches bought the rights to the image. What they bought is a license to use the image. That doesn’t stop someone else buying a similar license.

Anyway, @ev, I didn’t buy the rights to the image itself, just the unlimited use thereof. So The Ladies appear elsewhere. Like, France!
I’m feeling really dumb cuz I just now noticed that there’s a pyramid in the picture… O_O
Whenever I’m out and want to look up the Smart Bitches website I always write http://www.smartbitchestrashynovels.com I always assumed I was just stupid and had no memory – but if that was the original banner (and I’ve been lurking this site since very close to when it started) that means I’m not stupid at all!
Just resistant to change.
